Recording your show...

Ok, technically recording your performance contravenes a number of copyright laws, but that aside, does anyone do it? And if they do? What do they use to do it?

I'm interested in doing it with some of the more clubby nights I do to get a better feeling of how the whole set sounds when played back, and how the transitions sound. I've played around a few times at home recording my mixing and then playing it back, and I'm staggered at home different (i.e. bad) it can sometimes sound when you play back a mix a day or two later.

I've been looking at portable stereo recording devices so I can hook something into the "Record" output on my mixer and get a reasonable quality recording of a night, but I'm struggling to find something which fits both the "reasonable quality" and "reasonable price" criteria with most devices which are capable of recording 4hrs+ of stereo audio through line inputs costing £250+ :eek:

It's a shame my laptop only has a mono microphone input (which can record at line levels, but with very poor quality). I guess the solution could be to add a USB recording device (or even buy a separate netbook with line input - given the £250+ pricetag of alternative devices??)

Anyone have any experience in this area?

Bit bulky to take out though...? Ideally I was thinking portable. CD recording would also be limited to 90mins or so wouldn't it? Do any of the iPod range have a line in?

I'm waiting for someone to say Minidisc :zip:

Infact you could do much worse than use a Minidsic player. They are still good reliable little recorders.

Failing that, pick up a usb soundcard for your laptop with stereo inputs for around £60.

I use one of these for in the field recording. Very capable unit.

You then also have to take into consideration the cost of a compatible ipod if you dont already own one.

If you use the mic on your laptop like i do you have to turn the bitrate up to cd or dvd.

Then you have to turn the mic input down to about level 5 then it should sound really nice.

When i record my mix sets for the car this is what i do.

I can't do that because I don't use Virtual DJ's inbuilt mixer so if I set it to record, I always get the output from both decks (even while I'm cueing up).

I could switch to using a single output and a simple Midi based mixer (which could actually work out cheaper), but I do like my Denon :)

How does that work if i have an external mixer ?
Do I need to router the rec-out on the mixer to a line-in in my sound card and then route the audio in Traktor ?

Yes you would have to route the external mixer output to a line input on the soundcard and set Traktor to record only the external input.

Do you use this along with another USB device (i.e. like the Denon MC6000 or some other kind of MIDI controller or Audio device?)

Call me over-cautious, but I'm trying to avoid connecting anything else by USB alongside the Denon DN-S1200's that I'm using to control Virtual DJ and provide my live audio feed!

Or alternatively, has anyone come across any cheap digital cameras which can take an external audio feed (and work well in low light conditions, and record for 4hrs+)

I used to use a creative labs audigy PCMCIA sound card on my old laptop to record live sets straight into VDJ, my new laptop doesn't have this slot so I haven't been able to record like this.

I am considering getting one of these to record my sets for analysing at a later date:

I went down this route and bought one (well, technically I've bought two thanks to an Amazon screwup - an MP330 and a MP860) and these are only good for making recordings for reference purposes. The MP860 records at 4bit resolution, 35Khz sample rate as a WAV, the MP330 specs make it even harder to work out what it does, but it seems max out at about 17Khz sample rate.

In a world where 16bit or even 24bit resolution is the norm with sample rates from 44.1Khz upwards, it's very poor quality.

I'm trading them in for the Zoom H1 today.

i had a look at some of my DJAY and ITCH recordings and they were taking up almost half of my hard drive when analyzed!

I would recommend a decent digital recorder, or external drive? Just take an output on a mixer if you cant from the laptop if you do not have this function.

Back to the "No line in" problem, and my reluctance to add any more USB devices to my main playout system.

I've got the H1 now anyway which records as MP3's or Wav's (up to 24bit stereo and 96Khz sample rate) either via line in or using it's own inbuilt stereo Mic's.
