Over the last few weeks, I have been changing my show to make it smaller and lighter (apart from the Wizard cases!) and easier to set up and tonight is the first time for all the new gear.

It's a regular venue and I'm playing alongside a tribute act and also doing uplighting for the Hotel.

So new gear being used tonight is the MC6000, new SM58 radio mic, QSC K10s and 2 x Wizard Extremes.

I have tested and tested the MC6000 alongside the laptop and it seems stable. I have hooked the K10s up to the RCF sub and tried it in different configurations - the way they tell you to do it didn't produce much bass for me for some reason.

I have just been out testing the mic and I think it was Shaun that bought one and didn't like it 'cos there is no gain on the receiver. I've had a little play, but will have to see if I get any problems with feedback tonight. I have a leaded 58 with me anyway.

I have now got the Ryger Footlight controller and Daslight and have spent a whole day learning how to control the Wizards using files than Ian Forest sent me (Ta!) and also using the controller as a dongle and moving the Wizards manually.

So, the sound will take some tweaking and will be completely different and will take some getting used to, after using the RCFs for 2 years.

Anyway, I don't think I could have done much more prep for this one, so fingers crossed all goes OK.

Good luck - be interesting how it sounds to you in a real situation (I'm sure the audience will be happy with it) Reckon it'll be 2 or 3 gigs before you are satisfied with the sound, more by getting used to it rather than tweaking.

I went from Denon to Pioneer and must admit, still prefer Pioneer, but the MC6000 does what I want it to and is a lot smaller than the other deck.

The MC6000 is 24bit via USB so should sound brilliant.

Surely you will need a decent haze/smoke machine to get the full effect from the Wizards.

The speakers actually sound very good. When I heard them last week, whilst I was at Darren's, I did hear a metal rattle...turn out to be the ladder the were resting against :D

Re mic gain, RTFM. ;) Should you need it, there's an attenuate switch in the transmitter, I think. ( Says the man who only reads the manual when somebody asks a question about it. :o :o :o )

Depends what you mean by better CB - they aren't such a 'big' sound as the RCFs, but then they are 15" and the QSC are 10". As others have sound the QSC are more 'hi fi' sounding. Haze would be good, but the programmes I am going to use don't really require it.

Ta! Yep, MC6000 on it's own. I do have back up of an DN-X500 and HD2500 should it die completely!

I tried the way QSC recommend and there was hardly any bass - I really had to turn the gain pot up to full to get anything tbh, so I am going from the RCF bin full range out to the tops. I tired it with the crossover set at 80, 100 and 120Hz on high pass out, but didn't like that sound either!

There is and I have read the manual. I reckon I will need to turn it down too.

The other radio mics had adjustable gain on the front - this just has a switch inside for + or - 10 db I think.

ANd yes, I have done as much prep as I've had time for.

Well, I have to report that everything went swimmingly eventually.

Got to the Hotel and found a coach party of old folk checking in at the same time, so I ended up carrying bags and suitcases in...not quite sure how that happened!

Set up, Wizards were fine - I had them on the winch pods for last night as there wasn't really room to put them on separate tripods. Plugged in the controller and everything was fine. Switched on the sound system - tested mic and all good.

Booted up VDJ and turned the controller on....and VDJ wasn't seeing the MC6000 at all. No mapper and no sound card, so I rebooted everything a few times and still nothing. The only thing left to try was the USB lead, which I swapped over and hey presto - it worked. Brand new lead too, so it seems a bit strange.

Anyway, after that VDJ worked flawlessly. I'm not sure I like the sound of the mic through the system, but things always take time to get used to I suppose.

The K10s sounded fantastic with the RCF sub - real quality. I never thought you'd get a sound like that from a 10" cab.

So overall, I'm happy, but another knackering night as I supplied uplighting too, so I didn't get home until just after 2am, went to bed at 4:30am and was up again at 8:30am for football.

Another uplighting job tonight and a 50th birthday. Less gear required though. :thumbsup:

USB cables? Notoriously ephemeral. :( I've known them die for no reason at all. :confused: It's a bit of a game, when you suspect a fault in hundreds of pounds worth of gear, and then find it's £1.50 worth of cable at fault. ;)

I used my Beta 58 at a kids party on Sunday, and I have to say I loved the sound*. To me it seemed way better than a standard SM58 wireless, which in turn sounds better to me than a cabled SM 58, which is curious, as they use the same capsule, I believe. :daft: :daft:


*The :Censored: eats batteries though, two hours out of a couple of Duracell. :confused: :( :( I can live with that, as AA Duracells are relatively cheap. )

That may make a significant difference. If you run pots at the extremities, they do seem to sound worse, as far as I can tell. Even if you've got them in the middle, it can still be a factor. Did you compare it to your cabled 58? In my opinion, it's not a completely like for like test, but should have given you a pointer.

No, the gain pot was well down and the slightest movement made it go too loud, that's why I was considering using the attenuator switch.

ON the Pioneer mixer, it was the opposite way round - the corded mic was way louder than the radio mic.

Re outputs, to clarify the apparent misunderstanding:
I have two wireless mics with variable out put. The Audio Technica is on the rear, and hard to access when built into my case. I have adjusted it to roughly be on a level with my cabled mics. The old Shure which I got from John has a big volume control on the front, which has been adjusted to a similar level.

The Beta has no "variable" controls, and I haven't touched the attenuators switch. Wherever it's set, it is also giving a roughly similar output to the other two. I still feel you should compare it to the cabled model, and see if it sounds similar. Personally, I'm happier with the sound of the newer model, though as I say, it is a Beta capsule inside, so not really a valid comparison.

It will be interesting to see how you go on, and also what bettery life you get. I wonder if that was one reason why mine was put onto Ebay. :confused: I also wonder if it might be worth letting Shure have a look at it. :confused:

It is.

It's not such a 'big' sound as the RCF but then they are 15". Much smoother than the Mackie and surprisingly loud for a 10". In a different league to the WAudio.

I did use them with a sub last night though. I am taking the sub tonight too, but will try them without too.

I was right - it was feeding back and the gain pot was on very low indeed on the mixer, so after a couple f weeks, I decided to turn the attenuator switch to -10db and it worked much better. No feedback in front of the speakers and the gain is much easier to adjust on the mixer.

Not keen on the switch though.

It's nothing to do with sound quality Alan, the capsule is still the same and I no longer have a problem with feedback.

My new mic uses AA batteries too, but I haven't changed mine at all yet. Take them out in between and dont leave the mic on standby and all should be fine.

Different magnet, different capsule, different frequency response, higher output, suoer cardioid rather than cardioid. Otherwise, they're exactly the same. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
