GPS Trackers in disco item's..

I have a had a little idea for equipment that get lost / stolen..

I can get my hands on little SIM GPS trackers. They have a battery in them and can be also be charged on the unit..

So if you have powered speakers you could put the track inside the speaker and link to power to the power plug on the speaker to change the tracker up.

All you do it text / call the tracker on the sim card you have put in and then it will tell you the gps to put in to google maps and tell you where the tracker / item is.

Has any ever done this or this kinda idea. Cus if my equipment got robbed i have insurance but would still like to know who robbed me :D

It probably would void. All depends how to you wire it in to the main. But you wanna be cleaver and not make a new plug so when it gets sold on the new user plugs in to test and bang!! its powered up and will respond to the text you have sent the tracker ..

The gps trackers i'm looking at are import but around £30 each but need to import a good frew.
They are on ebay for 50 odd pound.

What do you mean what does it matter if it's getting robbed

Scenario:

You fit the tracker, next day a speaker blows. Your speaker hasn't been robbed and you've voided your warranty!!!!!

Yeh i no what your saying. its just a idea i had. maybe fit after 12 months then ??

I'm fitting in it my speakers and some lights if there is enough space. Be funny turning up to a venue tracked down and used your speakers saying he just got from the shop new and you got tracker fitted in them lol

Sounds all good etc but:

1) Warrenty (as Cowlinn has explained)
2) How long does the battery last
3) How far does the gprs single carry
4) How does this mean you will find out who has your equipment, as the robbers etc could have sold it in a pub to any joe bloggs
5) Is it really worth risking a electricl shock etc for installing ?

Agreed but wait for 12 months

i don't understand this?? Gprs is a data single not GPS. But it goes anywhere.

You will still find your speakers and show police you have a tracker fitted only you have the number and imei number of the tracker thats fixed in the speaker. the person that will have the speaker i dought will even think there a tracker in there.

If you no good with wiring safety you would not do this. This is not somthing you can buy of the shelf designed for this. But its a step closer

Lets just hope they dont bring them to me as they wouldn't get used for about 3months lol

Also is there anything to say it's got to be powered up for so long to get a signal ?

If someone does power up and it set's the signal off does it then follow that signal or is it just saying this is were your item was ?

As i can see somone powering it up to check it works then off again and moving along elsewere.

So first turn on it takes 45s.

So if the unit it dead you send a text to the sim card in the unit. When it gets single / gps it wil text you back with information where the tracker is.

so every time you text the unit it will send you information where the tracker is.

Interesting gadget. I've used GPRS routers in the oil fields, and some had GPS - never needed the GPS function, but cool anyway.

The ebay products run on 5VDC. They come with a mains adapter (110-240VAC) for power. To fit inside a typical active speaker would require schematics of the speaker to pick off a 5V rail (assuming there is enough power), or somehow fitting a small 5V supply off the mains-in.

Either way, not a job for anyone who isn't a bit of an electronics wizz.

Mounted inside an enclosure (ie active speaker/amp), and then inside a bag/flightcase, and then inside a van -I would be a bit worried about a reliable GPRS and GPS signal...


Probably a great addition to a pre-wired console case thou!
