Im looking at changing my mobile phone to a smartphone. How it is at the moment ive got a Samsung Tocco-Lite on a 02 sim only contract.

As well i have mobile broadband with 3 the 15gb per month for £15.00. With the mobile broadband i have never used over 500mb on it. Its mainly used for discos if i have to download any mp3s.

Now what im intending on doing is paying my mobile broadband contract off to get rid of it.

and then get a smartphone with the internet tethering bolt on. I want a better phone that i will be able to recieve emails on the move with it and of course internet access.

I have looked at the iphone 4 but tbh the monthly contract is more than i want to pay per month.

The models ive been looking at are the Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire, Nokia N8 ideally i want to stay with my current provider 02. I wouldnt mind the iphone but only at the right price.

anyone got any recommendations?

cheers

John

Hi John,

I have just moved from a Nokia smartphone to a Blackberry and would never go back. Really easy to use, great for handling emails on the move and I use it as a 'modem' at gigs (similar to a dongle).

I am on 3 and I know they got a lot of stick in their early days but the have improved their network a lot and I never have any signal problems.

They have the latest one for around £30/month with 2000mins, 5000texts and 3000 3to3 mins as well as unlimited internet. I get it for £26 but think thats because I'm in my third year with them.

Might be worth a look!

I have a iPhone but I'm actually going back to having a Nokia (N8). As for network, currently on o2 but will probably go the the One Plan with 3. With Quidco you get £106 cashback. You could also use the cashback against the cost of the new iPhone if you don't get the higher tariff.

Edit:

Just seen this on the Three site:

iPhone 4 16GB Black 24 months £35 a month
Plus £69 upfront cost (Remember that you get £106 cashback via Quidco)
Includes:
•2000 any network minutes
•5000 texts
•5000 Three-to-Three minutes
•All-you-can-eat Data

If you're intending to use tethering John I'd go with Nokia (don't have experience with Blackberry so can't comment on how tethering works with that platform)

I was peeved when I switched from my Nokia N81 to my 3Gs to find that if I wanted to tether, It was an additional bolt-on at something like £11/month!

My Nokia let me tether via bluetooth simply using my phones GPRS/3G service (whichever was available) with no additional bolt-on required - It was great, had my laptop and TomTom connected to it and it worked like a charm.

I know you're a bit of a Sony fan too, so It might be worth waiting until the Sony Ericsson Experia Play comes out in April.

600 mins unlimited texts
24 month contract
Iphone cost £141.96

£35.74 a month

I decided against an iPhone in favour of my tried and tested Nokia N8 :)

This is a brilliant little phone with the highest camera resolution at 12 mega pixel and HD video recording - all great for mobile work to capture both videos and photos... Check out my gallery sometime, all the latest photos and videos are taken with my Nokia N8.

It's also good for the Internet, email and social networking :) like a small office lol

Great as an emergency backup player to as it has a 3.5mm output as well as an HDMI output for direct connection to an HDTV :)

All in all a great all rounder :)

Thanks

Glenn

You really think it's better than the iPhone?

I really do not rate the iPhone ... That's my opinion.

Each to their own i suppose :)

iPhone 4 all the way.

Superb piece of kit that is yet to be beaten. I would hold fire a few months and wait for number 5. ;)

Anyway back to the thread in question... My money is on the Nokia N8 :)

I'm with o2 and the coverage is debatable. I can have it next to me on full signal yet it will not ring.

I loved the iPhone when it came out, but I'm not sure how much more the i5 can deliver before it becomes a smaller version of the iPad.

Anyone got the HTC Desire HD?

My Nokia N900 has been a casualty of Nokias crap USB charger port design and Vodafone have stopped stocking them so my only option in the same range is the HTC.

I read the reviews on the Galaxy not the s2 but they said that the battery life is poor and it crashes a bit

So thats kinda put me off it. At the moment the Iphone4 is looking the favourite.

The new iOS 4.3 update will come with what they called a Personal Hot Spot! No need for bluetooth or cables. The phone will make its own personal WIFI that is obviously got a passkey. Little heads up!

It could be a while before its out. Plus wont it be even more expensive on contract than what the iphone 4 is currently is when its out.

How much did you have to pay for the upgrade?

Twinspin
21-02-2011, 08:48 PM
Well Steve i contacted 02 about it at first and they turned round and said to me i cant upgrade until i've been on an 02 contract for 6 months. I knew i could get the contract on another network.

So i said to them if a new customer thats never been on your network before
can get a 18/24 month contract then i should be able to i said to them im not in any debt with 02 am I. They said no.

So i was going to switch to Orange and rung the line to say I'm leaving 02 and the customer service person at 02 asked me why. So i said to them because you wont offer me an upgrade and if i went onto another network id pass a credit check as i did with you originally when i went onto your sim only contract.

So she spoke to the upgrade team and they looked further into my account with 02 and they said to me. Sorry about this but the upgrades department are in fact wrong and we will honor your upgrade

heres the deal i got with them.

£35.74 a month
600 Minutes of Talk time
unlimited texts
500MB data

IPhone 4 cost £141.91

Hold on you said you've only got so long left with your current contract so why not do what as been said and sell you current phone and go with the offer that has also been mentioned

IE: £Xamount for the iphone 4 and cheaper monthly plan ?

Seems like you have just gone for the first deal and thats it :(

My advice would be to cancel the plan you have just gone for etc and shop around......

Same as what I pay but I have unlimited data...There are much better deals available on the market. I know it's a pain transferring your number over and all that but even still.

Still think you'd have been better off buying whichever phone you decided upon outright (sim free) and going on Simplicity (if you wanted to stay with o2)

I'm on the next tariff down from yours (300 mins/Unlimited Texts/500mb internet) and only pay £14.29/month (inc. 30% discount) on a 30-day rolling iPhone contract.

I think i need to explain Dave. This is how it is I bought a samsung tocco lite mobile about 14 months ago at the time i was on pay-as-you-go

In november 2010 i come off pay-and-go and went sim only on a 1 month contract with 02 and then renewed up until this month.

So now im just about to go onto a 24 month contract with 02 where i get the Iphone4 with it (with the extra £141.91 for the phone)

I looked at the other deals on other networks with the iphone i couldnt find a better deal on other networks at the price point i wanted to pay per month.

So i thought why spend having my number changed on to another network if the deals are the same as 02 pretty much.

If you go onto a cheaper plan Dave the more expensive the Iphone cost is.

when my contracts up i might go back onto sim only. At the moment im happy with what deal ive got with 02.

I went to SIM only with my 3GS after the contract expired so I could skip the iphone 4 and look at the 5 when it comes out.
Who'd have thought many years ago we'd all spend so much on a phone in our pocket instead of making the urgent 10p call from a phone box!

Iphone4 arrived yesterday and ive set it all up. Im just waiting for my 02 service to be switched on now on the micro 3g sim.

So far after having a good play around with the phone i like it.

I didnt fancy waiting while september i needed a phone to i could retrieve my emails quicker. So wont be changing for the Iphone 5 anytime soon.

The Iphone4 is good enough i think.

I havent took the plastic off the screens yet im hoping to get a leather wallet for the phone tommorow from one of the phone shops in Hull.

Thought I would tag onto this thread as opposed to starting a new one.

Iphone was going to be my phone of choice when renewing next week, but have been reccomended the Nokia N8. I also like the look of the HTC Desire HD. I have heard quite a bit negativity about the Iphone and spec wise I think the Nokia has the edge.

Any opinions ??

How do you know this?

17-03-2011, 09:52 PM
Just do a search.

“For the iPhone 5, we continue to hear that a July launch is unlikely, with various casing suppliers and touch suppliers still ramping up, with some chip vendors not having yet received firm iPhone 5 orders, and with other sockets like the image sensor (most likely going to Omnivision exclusively, but with some potential for Sony to split that socket) still in flux. Given these factors, we think a September launch is more likely, off from Apple’s traditional iPhone launch schedule, but giving the firm more time to enhance its next-generation instant communications on the phone.”

Of course they are going to say that. They're on commission.

Think of it in estate agency terms.

Client A comes in and says he is looking for a flat in Any Road. You know that one will be coming up soon, you're just not sure when.

Do you:

A - Say that you will contact him when one comes up.

or

B - Say you have one round the corner in Any Way which is much better and available now.
