Top Heavy!!

Hey all, hope your having a great Monday evening :)

I sold & bought new speakers last week - I'm now ACTIVE.....

.... and now heres my problem - I no longer have my amps on the bottom shelf of my stand hence it is very TOP HEAVY with the lights on top and only the laptop and midi mixer underneath.

So where do I turn now? its very unsafe as it stands!

I'm using a Kam stand by the way - are Ultimax more stable?

Yeah it may be abit more heavy which i did sy to Pe7e the other night to which is same as you about going active BUT my playout seem to balance the frame out.

I too own a KAM stand and only the 4ft version BUT i tend to find that if i put alot of heavy lightson then yes it will be top heavy :(

Only thing i can suggest is looking at what you put on your stand and see if you can balance the weight out etc

Ultimax are more stable, ive never had a problem with my booth. Just buy a heavy DJ mixer, You need a Mixer, your mic cant sound any good atm

Yes an ultimax is more stable it has a bigger footprint and is far more ridged.
That said you shouldn't be relying on the weight of your amps for stability anyway.
Best thing to do is make your base a good 6" wider in depth, bolt on some square tube steel or something obviously making sure it good and strong up to the stress.
Also you should look at how your lights go on the weight should be centralised and by that I don't mean in the middle I mean front to back.

The heavy mixer bit was a joke, but how do you add bass and treble to your mic on a midi contoller?

I dont- I bought a Mic that suits my voice and I use it in a correct way.

I use RCF actives.

I also use an Ultimax 6ft and I noticed it being extremely TOP HEAVY at my last gig. I had 7 effects hung. Since changing my P/O flightcase to a lighter model, I can seem to "balance the weight" as I once could.

I wont be using more than 4/5 effects now, unless someone knows how to "balance the weight" when using more effects??

Thanks for this - a really useful link. I see they have made a stand that folds down much smaller and the 2 ft one looks quite good too.

I use the lower shelf to store my empty boxes and my spares bag. As the spare cables bag is pretty weighty it counter balances the stand quite well although since loosing a lot of my weighty halogen in favour of lighter led effects the problem is less noticable now.

When I put another DJ out with the giraffe stand and overhead we use 2 extension bars that slip into the bottom bar on the floor facing backwards behind the booth.

It is very effective and any front knock would not knock the stand over

Though they would indeed be suited to that role, my post was almost entirely in jest. Hence the row of smileys. However, it is another reason why I feel unlikely to ever employ an active system myself.

Justin had exactly the same problem as the OP, when he had his Mackies. A stack of Class D's and a pair of C Mark amps solved his problem entirely.
