Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place.
On friday night I had to cancel one of my regular gigs at my local because
I really hurt myself badly. How I did it I'm not sure to be totally honest but I thought I was going to die to be truthful (that will sound very over the top but it's true and I was very, very scared).

All I can put it down to is that it must have been when I was loading the van up? I take great care in lifting heavy stuff and I have minimalised weight etc as much as I can over the past year or so as I have had times when I have had a dodgy back, nothing too bad though and it's usually gone within a few days.

I had loaded the van up in the afternoon so that I didn't have to do it in the dark. Around 15 minutes after I had finished, I was sat at my computer and noticed that when I breathed in I got a sharp pain in my right collar bone and across my shoulder. Within an hour I had very sharp, excrutiating pains down my right side, across my chest and down my ribs. It got so bad that I found it hard to breathe and I was in absolute agony.

I couldn't really move much. It was agony even picking up the phone to cancel the gig. I decided to go to bed to try and sleep through it but couldn't get my clothes off and couldn't even lay down. The pain seemed to be getting worse and I was (embarrassingly) very scared.

I know it sounds silly and luckily I had nothing booked in for saturday but even though I was in agony, I kept thinking of the work I had coming up and if this was bad, how would I sort it all out? My wife called an ambulance out on friday evening and I was taken to hospital, given painkillers (which didn't really work at the time), had blood tests, an x-ray and was told that I had torn all of the muscles between my ribs down the right side.

Now, as I said....I am always careful. I don't like asking for help but I do make things easier for myself where possible. I don't remember thinking "Ooh, that was heavy" or "Ouch, that hurt" at any point so it could have been the silliest little thing that did it but the result was absolute agony.

I've been on painkillers and stuck in bed until this morning. I am not in so much agony now but the pain is still there and they reckon it could be a few more days before I am fully recovered (if I take it easy).

I'd like to thank Mike (Ecstatic Events) for jumping in and offering to cover my gig this saturday. I have a wedding fayre on sunday which I am committed to doing but I will need to take it really easy. Next week is a busy one so I MUST be ok for then.

Guys, take it easy. Be careful when you are loading and unloading, setting up and breaking down etc etc....Don't be afraid to ask for help ever because I would hate anyone else to have to experience the pain that I went through. I know that's what I'll be doing in the future and I'm not ashamed to say it. I don't ever want to be in this position again.

Right, I'm off back to bed which may sound cool but it's actually very boring!

Take it easy!

Ouch! Sounds like it could've happened when stretching rather than lifting - were you putting stuff in your van and then reaching in and pushing it into position?

I've had similar injuries in Judo, it does take a while to heal, and its really awkward getting a comfortable sleeping position - painkillers and resting it is the only thing you can do.

Thanks for posting that. It just goes to show what you can do to yourself. I have a problem with my back, but would rather strugle on myself than ask for help. I will try and remember next time.
Hope it clears up soon.

Ouch! Sounds like it could've happened when stretching rather than lifting Yep... that's usually what does it!

I pulled my intercostal muscles down my right side once many years ago, and I can certainly sympathise with you Gary.... the pain just breathing can be excruciating!

Unfortunately, I was at the Irish dancing World Championships when it happened, so I couldn't stop and rest at all until nearly a week later. I spent most of my time on stage with tears rolling down my cheeks!!!!

Take care of yourself, Gary, and rest as much as possible... they'll heal a lot quicker that way!

Get better soon.

All the best Gary, sorry to hear about your misfortune. Sounds like rest and recuperation is the only answer. I'd advise against trying to do normal things again before you're ready. If you aggravate the condition, it may take longer to fix. Can you get a roadie?

Thanks people.
Considering I was in complete agony a few days ago, the pain is now bearable, uncomfortable but bearable.

Darren, thanks for the offer.

get well soon

ive had recurring back problems since i used to play Rugby at school and always take it easy or get help, unfortunately sometimes you just have to get on with it and take the risks (not ideal)

the biggest bane of my life is LED Uplighting, i have 16 of them and all that bending over, wiring, shuffling around, gaffa taping etc, kills my back!!
