This is driving me crazy now. I treated myself to a new pocket camcorder (hitachi dz-hv575e) and it records in .avi

I want to be able to edit the footage so it needs to be in another format

preferably .mov .mp4 etc

Basically anything final cut will read

PLEASE can someone tell me how to convert .avi :( :(

Thanks

Mmmm, OK.

You are a sort of APPLE guy, no?

Why after all the advice you were given did you buy a camcorder than outputs AVI?

You will have problems with quality loss but try http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_mac/

WHY?

In fact, it's standard practise for cameras like mine to record in .avi

.avi isn't and editing codec, so it's not my fault :D

basically, I need to convert it.

I doubt it! LOL!!!:beer1:

There is a feature in Wondershare where you can batch capture all of your footage and then convert it as x1 file as a MOV or WMV or basically anything you want, so all is not lost!

I'm really shocked FCP can't open .avi? The strange thing is, my friend Joe uses the same laptop as me, and his FCP opens .avi

I don't understand that?

It all depends on what codes are installed on your laptop. An AVI file is just a container with the data in it. So there are a load of ways of compressing to an AVI.

If you are using a Mac, perhaps Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/index.php) will convert it?

On Windoze I use the Xillisoft Video Converter (http://www.xilisoft.com/) which is excellent.

It is complex but if you search the forums there are normally recommended settings for most types of conversion.
