What do you do to help this industry ??

Another thread which has been done in the past, but interested to see if things have changed.

Whenever someone does something wrong the inevitable 'It does not help this industry' comment crops up.

So it is easy to harm the industry, but what do you do to HELP the industry ??

Nothing. I look after my little corner and let the rest get on with theirs.

I associate only with other like minded professionals and give the rest a wide berth.

Not really, it tends to be in the eyes of the person "reading about whats happened" at the point in time, after a few days / weeks it's forgot, as with any industry. Do you remember a certain person that hit watchdog, or the fact that three "agents" a week end up in court, some even go to prison, probablu not.

No, not pointless, just easierly forgotten in the mists of time. OK, try Mike Jordan, Rob Peck, both in their own right did a lot for the industry, in 10 years Austin Levitt and myself will be forgotten, Darren will have run off to a tropical island and will be forgotten :D

But just because a particular person is forgotten, it doesn't mean that the industry as a whole hasn't been changed as a result of their (and other people's) actions, surely? :confused:

The quick answer would have to be ....yes, sort of. Now this would be a good debate for the NADJ / SEDA / AMPDJ bash, as it can and could several different aspects of reply. I am thinking of one person, who, at the time did more damage than you could conceive, and even I can't remember their name off the top of my head (I'm glad to say), but in general, look at the reports on the forums in the last year:- DJ=Pedo, DJ=Porn, DJ=doesn't turn up, this happen dozens of times per month somewhere, a few words spoken at the time, but the industry is still the same as in the 70's, 80's, 90's, all thats changed is technology and music.

i do a good job try and please everybody,im always polite,constantly asking if they are happy sofar ect if anyone has a request i gladly play it for them.I think that is doing a lot for our industry because in the end its all about our reputation isnt it?:Meeting:

I use a hands on approach with young people,i am involved in the local youth service (youth clubs) and arrange dj work shops have managed to get some well known Radio & club djs to come and give talks and demos all free of charge.
Also have raised £ 39,000 to build a full music production studio at the local youth club,the kids helped build it ,and they get instruction all free of charge from like minded local music industry people.

I am a role model for the industry

I own all my music properly paid for.
I educate DJ's by some of my blogs about roles and responsibilities of DJ's http://mobile-disco-preston.blogspot.com/2011/02/wedding-dj-blackpool-introducing-bride.html (this is only one of many. I use single blogs to link wheel to help seo my sites)
I am always smart well presented and my focus is 100% on customer service and satisfaction the way DJ's should be.
I aim to go one step further than other DJ's with relative insurance and equipment testing.
and I am a Gear Snob :)

but my main focus is making a decent living from a trade I have done since I was 15. (not quite got there yet) and to do PT hours earning full time money so I can spend more time with my wonderful family :)

Nothing wrong with that, there is nothing worse than seeing a disco that looks like road kill.

I just concentrate on giving my customers what they want and make the night all about them. I also take great pride in using the best equipment I can afford and putting on a great show. Business is good so it seems to be working so hopefully I am setting a good example.

It could be argued that this is raising standards in our industry but I see what you mean.

Perhaps the OP looking for grand examples like 'I designed the first ever moonflower' or 'I wrote Black Lace - Superman'. :)

In my opinion anything you do at a function you are doing for yourself, so as much as you say that you are being professional etc at the end of the day you are doing that for yourself.

Anything you do for a registered organisation (NADJ), or lobbying for a cause that would help other DJ's (and not just yourself) etc is what I would consider to be doing something to help 'the industry'. I am excluding helping out other DJ's who are just setting up or want advice because again that's helping a particular individual and not the industry per se.

So, personally, I don't do anything to help the industry, but I do quite a lot to help myself, (and that's not meant in a selfish way).

Actively promote good practise and explain/advise clients on what they should look out for, whether they decide to book me or not.

I am going to start promoting luxury wedding ipod discos so that people do not have to book a DJ :D

I was actually thinking of having about 20 remote set ups in weddings and djing from a club type thing in my spare room and doing them all at once via the internet. Requests can be sorted out by a group of students i employ and distributed remotely to each venue.

First dance could be a bit tricky but i have a tech guy on the case at the moment.
