done the same as I did yesterday,

Had a lead come through via a website, sent off the quote thinking that's another one i wont hear from, only for it to turn into a booking, after speaking to the client wishing maybe you hadn't accepted the booking....

What makes you wish you hadn't taken the booking?

This happened to me with a venue which is a 4 hour drive away, so I worked out a price which included travel expenses and an overnight stay in a nearby hotel. I honestly thought they'd find someone else, email came back within an hour asking where to send the deposit! Gutted and pleased at the same time lol.

Had similar for a kids party next Saturday. Local to me, but trying to move away from kids parties and this is a joint one. Put in a 'respectable' price only for them to book. Glad of the work but wishing I maybe just said no.

The birthday boy likes hard rock/metal goth a little out of my comfort zone

Lol...ohhh...your in for a treat then...especially if all his mates do to. Its one of those genres where the released single from an album bombs, and the most obscure tracks are popular with the crowd.

My honest advice is spend alot of time listening to what your client likes, sub genres, artists etc...and make sure you have something connected to the internet on the night for downloads.

Someone into the scene (I was/am) accepts that a mobile disco wont have the bulk of what they like, so if you explain that you have to go and source most of it...you may find the offer of their own collection on the night comes up. Its happened before ;)

You might also want to check which of the 3 (very different) genres that you mentioned he likes.

Good point. What you may consider goth...probably isnt. My biggest bugbear was being compared to Manson as a "goth"...when that drizzles as far from goth as is possible ;)

from the email i received
" I know my son & mates are into things like System of
a Down, Lordi, Black Sabbath, Black Label Society, Rammstein etc,"

have to say the only one i had heard of was Black Sabbath:run:

I reckon the birthday boy and his friends will happily give you a playlist to cover the whole night. I've always found an 'alternative' crowd great to play for and really helpful when it comes to getting the music right for them.

Good communication is your key to success here. You may not like the style of music but as long as you speak to them, find out exactly what they want. This way it gives you a chance to get yourself familiar with the tunes before the gig.

I'm totally ignorant of all the second one, and its related styles, but the first one!! Metal? I think not. ;) Apart from a few notable ones, it's just straight ahead Rock.

How I vigorously hate pigeonholing musical styles. One man's metal is another man's cheese.

Hence my ponderous Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

I agree, with the exception of Maiden & maybe one or 2 others (I haven't looked at the link since my last comment) there's bugger all Metal on there.

Must admit i'm a lot less anxious about doing this gig now, i have been on you tube and have found a group called heavenly and i have just purchased their last 2 albums for my personal collection so maybe the night wont be so bad, lots of smoke (hopefully) give the lasers and my Adj light bar a work out.
is 42 years old too old to be getting onto heavy rock or am i just having a mid life crisis...

Completely off topic but just had quick shifty at your website (I was in Bournemouth for 30 years is why!) and noticed your email address on the availability page is wrong (capital M at beginning) Cheers.

Carry on
