I recommend a Stairville SD300 from Thomann at less than £100 including delivery with 3 years warranty. I have one myself that I bought a few months back and it is very good. Check it out.

Get another HP2s.
Are you sure it's the machine and not the remote that's packed up? I found that if I pushed the remote's jack part way in and wiggled it, the machine pumped smoke. The remote lights all worked ok so you couldn't tell it wasn't working. I replaced mine with one helpfully supplied by someone on here (a real star!) and hey presto it worked absolutely fine.

Video of this hazer on youtube, watch it through as it shows variable bursts.
Seems to be a cracking little machine for under £100 :)

The Stairville sd300 was being used very heavily in the videos. The quantity output can be reduced so it is hardly seen and I have used mine in several venues with smoke alarms.
