I don't have that vast a music collection, around 3000 tracks all paid for legally.

I don't do weddings, never have, and won't for a very long time.

I'm very much school discos, teen parties, 40ths etc. A couple of proms. I want at least 1000 gigs under my belt before I even think about weddings.

No – I don’t like to risk getting viruses off dodgy sites... I get all my stuff off iTunes.

I have been guilty of recording the chart show onto a cassette though, unfortunately my ghetto blaster also picked up all the other sounds in the room so most songs had my sister talking over them... I think the “hip” station was Long Wave Radio Atlantic 252! :eek:

I got loads of 100 greatest 5 CD pack type albums and all the Now albums + my own collection over the past 15 years. Then I buy any requests I don’t have using a dongle thing to connect my spare laptop to the internet if I need to. I also use things like the top 10 lists on this forum to check for popular tracks I don’t have...:)

Last minute unobtainable request, songs that you had on vinyl and CD but can't find etc etc There are plenty of reasons why people may have done it once or twice.

Lol – Actually, that reminds me, I did subscribe to Napster several years ago and paid a monthly subscription, when I started up as a children’s entertainer I tried to use some of the Napster tracks, but they had expired!!! Made VDJ crash left right and centre!!! Another reason not to download from dodgy sites.
My ITunes library shows 21000 tracks, but there are 12000 duplicates! I’m only just starting to think about DJing so my music is totally unorganised... I’ve started organising tracks into playlists in iTunes, that’s why I like VDJ because I can import iTunes playlists, whereas OTTS doesn’t let you? I’m waiting to see some other programmes like Tractor to see if there is anything more stable than VDJ that is as user friendly.

itunes collection of probably 2000 other tracks which are not suitable for disco playout unless I did a Leonard Cohen / John Prine / etc theme night :D
I am watching and learning from the forum as to what music plays best on the road, and will of course be buying it legally.

I will admit as i have done previously, that i used to have a vast collection of dodgy music until i started the business when i hit the delete key, thankfully like some others have said have been able to pick up some good box sets and some really cheap stuff from Amazon, I did download 3 albums from amazon on sunday only to lose them when my hd failed yesterday, cant re download from amazon I have paid have the reciept but no music....

Exactly the same , and the 100 hits cds and now albums dont take up much space so can be taken to gigs as back up if the digital playout goes down.

I think you will still be able to get the music you have paid for as itunes keep your purchased products on file some where. You just need to search for it,

I can honestly (yes...really!) say that I have not downloaded any music illegally.
I have built my collection up over years and years and I have spent more time than I wish to even think about, ripping stuff to my system. I keep updating every week via Amazon MP3 and my Promo subscriptions. Ok, you have to pay for Amazon or I-Tunes but at the end of the day, they are accountable. When I do my accounts at the end of the year, it's surprises me that I haven't spent more.

I've said it before but I know a guy in my area that downloads everything and anything from Torrent sites. This is the same guy that claims to be a Promoter / Sound Engineer and Rock DJ yet he had no ACDC / Iron Maiden etc when someone requested them which I found amazing. He also claimed the other day (so I have been told) that he can supply Disco Entertainment very cheaply and will have "any song that you request" so I expect he's got a dongle or something and will download illegally.

My external HD crashed a while back when I was in the process of backing up and I lost all of my iTunes music folder:eek: !!! There were only about 20 tracks that I had bought from iTunes that week and had not managed to back up, but the people at Apple were very good to me… They let me re download all the stuff I had bought from them in the past couple of months (which was a bit of a pain because I ended up with hundreds more bloody duplicates):daft: . They don’t have to let you re download stuff though, that’s why it prompts you to back up at the point of purchase. The crash also lost all my playlists, which was a right pain!:mad:

Kind of off topic-ish (sorry) but maybe not....
I've just realised that for the past few months, since I have been taking my laptop with me as backup to a couple of regular venues...I have had access to the internet.

One of the venues I do regularly is for my 'Request Fest' nights and I have totally forgotten that I have had internet access so on the very rare occasion that I have not had something that someone has requested, I have completely forgotten that I could download it there and then from Amazon or I-Tunes!......D'oh!

Needless to say....from now on, unless it is something that isn't available, my service should be spot on!
