View Full Version : No overhead lighting bars yes/no ?

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you have mobile dj setups that does not require the use of an overhead lighting bar wherever possible?

The reason I ask is that I think it would be easier to have a couple of lighting effects on plinths, such as a pair of moving heads and say two led car pans at the rear of the set.

Wonder if anyone else plays out in this scenario?

Thanks.

Yep.

2 x Wizards on winch stands and 2 moving heads on truss podiums (when finished!)

I'm heading towards the lighting effects on winch stand and doing away with the overhead. Some way off affording wizards however

Thanks for the replies.

I really want to do away with the overhead bar and go with a different Booth/stand for ease of set up.

I like the idea of two winch stands - the wizards will have to come later, but two good matched effects would do the job.

One question though about the truss podiums - how stable are they?

I'm moving away from the overhead too.

New plan is a Powerbar behind me and moving heads on truss podiums.

Depends on the size and weight of the base plates. The ones I bought are very stable, but aren't the easiest things to manoeuvre.

Yes, that's what I have misgivings about - I am considering using a pair of these:

Not very pretty - but functional!

I have one of those tripod stands....I wouldn't put anything more than a projector on it ;)

Here's the thing about truss podiums. Everyone is worried about how stable they are and yet no-one seems to be worried too much about a 25Kg pair of speakers on a tripod which could be knocked over just as easily.

Have worked with a similar rig a few times, but can be a problem if you have not much room, if your familiar with the venue then your ok ,but would find problems when i work blind and have to adapt to work in a space not much bigger than a postage stamp.I always carry a small 4 foot booth just in case so i can adapt to work on the fly but when you have a nice big performance space should look great.

Copycat :p

Have ordered a 'german version' of the powerbar and using the uprights on the ultimax with a datamoon on top of each. Unsure whether to swap datamoons for other lights (prob efx500's) or get a couple of moving heads on podiums. EFX500's I can use elsewhere but think they may block the effect of the powerbar.

Trust me, the only thing that would block it is lead shielding. ;) ;)

Chris, I have good news for you. Not only have you saved a large amount of wonga, by dealing with Germany, but the Stairville offering runs a treat on DMX, and in my humble opinion is essential.

The KAM has a different operating system, and doesn't appear to be as easy to run on DMX, as for one thing it needs fifteen channels, but can control each light individually this way. If you can live without the dimming facility ( and I don't seriously think you can ) it is possible to do everything else from the KAM switch panel, following a bit of vigorous tapdancing. :D :D :D :D :D :D

As I sit here, I'm absolutely delighted that I got a Stairville, and not a KAM. In twelve moths time, I have no idea.

Re with/without overhead, jury's still out. In all honesty, I can't really see how I can dispense with it, unless I just stick the bar on one upright, or the tripod.

In fairness, I've mentioned several times in the last year or so that I was going down the podium truss route, perhaps others got the idea from me? ;) :d

As for the powerbar.....I defintely copied Paul (Spirits High). :D

Very true, to an extent. I think it depends a lot where the podium will be used. If right next to you where you can keep an eye on guests getting too close then you can probably get away with less bulky and imposing bases. If you're planning on using them occasionally in another area of the room away from the DJ, then better to err on the side of caution and make them as sturdy as possible.

And totally disregarded the good advice of a forum member who is not at all cheesed off by such a slur on his worth. Well not much anyway. :p :D :D :D :D :D :D

Shaun, keep us posted as to developments, I reckon the comparison/differences between what appeared to be identical animals will be of great interest to many forum members.

Chris, as above, and if you need advice on it, I can help a little bit.

Expect a phone call approx 22 seconds after opening the box and glancing at the instructions ;) :D :D

Believe me, the instruction book only has four pages, I think. 22 seconds is about right for reading it. :D :D :D :D

I have Tri-lite with Mac 250's on top using emega clamps and also hang 42"/50" plasms off them. The idea of them falling off never worried me as If you make the base heavier enough they will not move.

I have been using this set up for around 3 years and never has once looked like falling over.

I think there was a post about this before and people said they were going to do it.......

How do you use the Omega clamps - are they bolted through the top plate?

I have made a bracket which slides into the top of the truss and the omega clams attach on to this.??

I will upload pics

I will try and dig them out of the unit tonight and get some decent photos.

I was toyying with the idea of going from Tri-lite to global truss however the lights will just sit on top and not actually be secured onto the trussing.

Don't get me wrong if some one fell on my trilite hard enough it would go over but thats why I put my EV T18's in front of them: Firstly to keep people away, secondly to make sure if they do go over there is extra weight on the base plates to hold them up.

I really don't know if what I have said made any sense but once I sow pics it should make more sense lol.

the front 2 round "tubey pipey" sit direct inside trilite and the rear just sits on top.

The omega clamp only has 2 fixings as with the mac's you only really need 2 and not 4.

Not sure what other moving heads use.

If anyone would like these, I can get them cooked up for around £40 with the Clamp

:Censored: , I wish people would not put such darn good ideas here :D :D .

Thinking about going down the route of a pair or effects ,( abstract gald`s) one on each ultimax upright , and an efx500 on the wind up stand , pre wired for different effects each side , either a pair of LED par`s , or a laser and a moon flower.

Any ideas how to mount the abstracts to the top of the ultimax uprights ?.

Either use a top casting or a short bar with clamps.

Is there a way of fitting the efx 500 to the top casting.

Never used a bar never will.

Although they were standard when i started never liked the idea of cocooning myself in, if that makes sense?

I prefer to keep sound and light out the way.

There is a screw in bolt that goes through the bracket on the EFX500 and then into the top casting. You'll need to have a little play with the bracket as there is 2 ways you can use it.

Personally, I use a short round bar which hardly shows behind my Wizards. This means I can use 2 clamps and a safety bond too.
