I was booked to do balloons for a kids football team last night 9pm - 10pm. Got to the club house at about 8:30 and was surprised to hear the DJ blasting out NWA tracks and loads of 90s rap, no one was dancing and it didn't seem to suit the adult audience (quite a few pensioners). As the evening progresses he played more appropriate chart and action songs. But I wouldn't play explicit lyrics, even at an adult gig, if there were 20 odd kids there. The chart music I play is all radio edits and some of them I wouldn't play in certain situations!

Do you consider yourself to have a responsibility to protect children from violent, racist and inappropriate language?

I have all mine labelled up on the cortex so if its the explicit version the screen says something like Pink-Perfect(dirty) the radio edit will say the same without the dirty bit, In answer to your question yes I do feel responsible with regards to kids

I think playing any explicit material rather assumes every member of your audience is OK about it. I don't play any explicit music, no matter what their age. It's not fair or reasonable in my opinion.

I recently played a request for Ceelo Green " :Censored: You" at a party with adults and children present. They specifically asked for the original version but I didn't think this would be appropriate so I cut the volume at the vital moments. Imagine my amazement when a group of children aged from about 7 - 11, and consisting of 50/50 English speaking and French speaking filled the gaps with the :Censored: Yous :eek:

In France it is not uncommon to be walking round a supermarket and hear uncensored versions of tracks from Lili Allen and Ceelo Green blasting out while you choose your vegetables :D

Itunes doesnt always label the tracks as explicit :( been caught out a few times with tracks that I havent played in awhile and forgotten :(

100% reliable for me. Never had one that doesn't say explit, that is explicit, if you get what I mean. :)

Increasingly I'm finding myself playing the explicit versions more and more, but I'll only do it at functions where I know the audience is appropriate (i.e. 18+) and/or I've checked with the organisers that it's Ok.

I've done quite a few 13th and 14th birthday parties recently where 70%+ of the playlist contains tracks with explicit lyrics and there isn't a radio edit available at the time of release (think Jessie J, Ceelo Green, Billionaire, Wretch 32, Ass on the dance floor, etc etc) and I've had to use the "dump" button to cover the naughty words, but I always check with the parents in advance to make sure they're Ok with it too.

I do take my responsibility to smaller children very seriously and will not play uncensored versions of songs when sub-teen children are present. I'll also not crank up the volume beyond a point until any child under the age of 5 is well away from the dance floor (no matter how many guests ask me to do so).

I really dont feel comfortable with playing anything with explicit lyrics, ok it may be oldfashioned but is it really necessary.
I would rather play the radio edit every time and that saves any embarrassment.

I play a regular slot at a local pub, and after all the time I have spent getting to know the regulars (and playing at their own private parties), I still feel uneasy when playing even radio edits. Simply because they sing the explicit lyrics, you never know who the mystery faces are!! Maybe future clientele!
