(or Woman)....but it wouldn't fit in the title.

Taking the garbage out of a previous thread .....I think there were some interesting issues that were not properly addressed.

If you have doshed out work how responsible are you in selecting a DJ that can fulfill the known requirements of the client??

When you are gigging elsewhere do you worry about how your appointed representative is acquitting himself???

Do you bristle with pride if he is a success....or sulk for a while because they thought he was better than you??;) ;)

Would you offer work to a cyber friend from the Forum without watching him (or her) first???

Charlie and Dave....may be better if you sit this one out.....Probably get a more rounded view from the rest of the forum.:beer1: :beer1: :beer1:

Any reason you've changed what Martin has said there Tom?

I have always vetted possible DJ's before working for me apart from one chap who I know of from the forums and its the only time someone has let me down.

I would never let someone go out for me unless I've met and spoken with them to gauge their style. I think all DJ's that work under "your" name should be of a very similar standard otherwise you may get complaints.

I got a dj that works for me and I trialled him at a gig I was doing for an hour then let him loose at a kids 10th, feedback was really good, I have never met Charlie but would let him do a kids party for me after seeing the video`s.

I wouldn't want anyone working for me under my name. Unless I ever get big and employ other Dj's.

I think its fairly easy to sort the wheat from the chaff from various forum posts. I know 2 DJ's I'd directly trust (one is a member here, the other is not).
I'd not simply pass gigs on "under my name" without getting to know them.

This is very different to a "sorry, I'm booked, try DJ xyz or DJ 123" email.
In this case, I generally don't recommend, but simply pass on details for the client to deal direct.

In either event, I wouldn't be passing clients to forum members that really don't get "It" with customer service or sub-contract.

I have had quite a few people on here work for me and I haven't seen them work, but I have met them on several occasions and they have either come on a booking with me or I trust their ethics and general ability after reading this forum for years!

I've never had any problems with the guys that have worked for me, but I knew that, the moment I asked them to help out. In other words, I wouldn't have asked if I thought there would be an issue.

For the record and I have told him this before, I would have no problem in having Charlie Brown work for me.

Read into that, what you will.

Pretty much the sort of system I use. I'm fortunate that I know well the two lads who are at the top of my list of other DJ's. I have worked with/for them on many occasions, so I know that they will be up to the job.

The tricky bit is knowing whether to be happy or miffed if they get glowing reports. ( Actually, it's not, you're always happy if they get a good write up. ;) )

I don't have a big ego - if they did a great job, its their hard work and professionalism and nothing to do with me, so no reason for me to be miffed.
I guess the only problem would be if I were playing in the same venue and there could be a direct comparison - but each gig is different.

I guess as I'm not inclined to play at being a bedroom agent, I'm only passing gigs from enquiries and not taking bookings and THEN finding a DJ to cover under my name.
For the forseable future, this will be a lucrative part-time business, that I can expand if I need to.

I should also have added "the DJ should also be localish to the gig". From posting gigs in other forums, I've had DJ's willing to travel 200miles for a £200 gig... :(
But, knowing the DJ's I trust means I know how they work.

Of course you may, young Charles. Just give me time to put my tin helmet, flak jacket, and safety specs on, and duck behind this :sofa:

I've spoke to Dave on the phone today. Everything and everyone is sorted - payment wise/what happened etc.

One thing I have learnt, is to properly brief other DJ's beforehand. Minimal communication = a recipe for disaster.

I think I do things slightly differently. Some people would say they are OTT whereas others appreciate it. I think it's what people are used to. I would never hold a grudge over someone who is better than me - half of the forum probably is! You have to be yourself...be honest, show that you care and entertain people to the best of your ability - the client will then decide who is 'best'...you can't be someone you're not.

ALSO - Play 'Mr multi op' is harder than it sounds and is something I won't be doing for a while. ;)

Sorry to throw a 2" Whitworth into the works here, but surely this flies full in the face of the often quoted "I put xxx hours into the preparation of my gig" argument. How can you possibly expect anyone to cover a gig at a moments notice and perform with the empathy which has taken weeks, even months, to establish with your client ?. Unless.......... you have full confidence that they have the versatility and ability to meet ,or better still exceed, the expectations of the customer. ;)
If they don't, they're still acting on your behalf, and should rightly expect your 100% support.

Always take subs / other DJ's very seriously. I currently have three that will take excess work whom I trust 100%. They are nice, flexible, accommodating people and they put on a similar show. I will only use them for work that they are best suited to. Most clients though ask for me specifically.

I've dropped several that don't make the grade and won't pass any work to those who have tried (and failed) to undercut me.

I don't worry about their performance because I know they are OK. I wouldn't pass work on to someone who couldn't be trusted.

If they are successful I'm chuffed. If they were better than me - what a good opportunity it would be good to learn something new. Problem is - the arrangements are seldom reciprocal. If you are the better DJ, people are less inclined to pass work to you for fear of losing out.

Would I use people on this forum? Locally, yes - but make yourselves known, I could do with an up to date contact list! I won't take a cut - the fee is negotiable by you (with a minimum amount) and the money is yours.

When I sub work, I pass on all the info I have from the client. I have been known to create a mock play-list for subs in the past, I feel it helps anyway.

You know the saying >> 90% preparation + 10% execution << excellent formula....lol

And if the playlist you supplied doesnt work......

Hence me using the word mock :daft: to give them a better idea of the music requested.

I have seen all of my subs in action, and have confidence in them to adjust accordingly.

Only ever had one issue with a chap who no longer works for me. He rang me on a Saturday afternoon to say he was unwell, and could not cover a wedding reception that evening  all of my subs were out at gigs, after making about 20 calls, I found a chap who I remembered from when I was a kid....lol

I have since found out he went out drinking instead of being unwell  :Censored:
