Winch servicing

I have a pair of Ultimax winch pods/stands and am thinking that they may need a service or even replacing soon. They are still working without issue, but I am thinking that they may need sorting out before something does go wrong.

Anyone got any experience with this please?

What about that professional equipment repair service centre over Wokingham way... what's it called.... erm, pretty sure it begins with an H. Yeah - H - something Events. Can't quite put my finger on the name.

Apparently "We [they] can normally repair your equipment within 24hours to 5 days due to the availability of parts and delivery time for parts. Should your lighting equipment require any parts that we do not stock, we will contact you prior to ordering the spare parts to let you know of the additional costs of any parts."

Nothing to service on them really ,check the cable easy to put on new one for peace of mind and a little grease on the cogs should do it.

I don't know if it is easy or not, but certainly wouldn't advise people to attempt something as important as this.

I think the part is the 'cable easy', not that is easy to do.

surly like all lifting kit like hoists etc. they should be tested and recertifyed for load every 4 years or whatever it is? may be wrong but a friend had to have a load of his kit done recently

I assume the cable easy is the grooved wheel that carries the cable. It will be under tension a lot of the time so the mountings are most likely to fail or sheer over time. The power drive ones look fairly easy to replace, but not sure about the ultimax ones.

I think the Powerdrive and Ultimax winch assembly are the same.

I can assure you that the Ultimax winch pods are pretty basic ,i have had them longer than anybody and service mine every year and put a new cable on every year even if they look ok,also take the service cover off and visual check on the cog mech for signs of wear and a light grease.I also do this with all my other makes of winch stands and have 10 in total all work in the same way.

There isn't a problem, I just want to get them serviced or change the winches. I don't really care how easy they are to change or how long people have had them, these are mine and I'd like to get them serviced.

Just to add a bit of clarification to some points that have been made: -
If indeed you are using a Winch stand apposed to a windup stand there may be some legalities that you all must take note of:

If it is a Winch you will need to have the item tested every 6 months and a certificate issued by a competent person see http://www.hse.gov.uk/lau/lacs/90-4.htm for more info.
This also covers eyebolts, flying fixtures etc.

Am I right in thinking a winch contains a ratchet?

And a windup lever would have to be locked off.
