I have used this idea in the past with a gobo machine which had a normal bulb. It did work most of the time (some of the time the heat of the bulb melted the acetate :) ) It is strange that this thread has been started, as only yesterday I started looking for a gobo projector which needs to rotate and must be 20w ( I have looked at the 10w American DJ one, but don't think it is bright enough)

Exactly.
I know Paul Arnett experiments with these.
I think there not as sharp as glass etched gobos and they can not take the heat.
Shame really as it would be a great idea to eliminate Tagging in text and add colour.

and they can not take the heat.
What heat? It's an LED fixture & the transparency sheets are desighed to be used with OHPs which do get quite warm.

I can't see a problem.

Is it out yet? I can't find any.

It's an ugly bugger isn't it? Mind you, it won't look bad with the lights off.

I don't see how you can tell from a video. Surely this is something you need to see in the flesh before making a decision.

This is a LED fixture yes,(I did a review on this model at an NADJ meeting)
It is 10w and weighs 3KG,and is v compact.
The light emitted is of a blue tinge and the optics are not as sharp as a Martin PR1(what I use).
However for the money(about £99)they are great value for money.

Yep ... my bet is if you stand 10+ meters back it will look very poor indeed.

If the gobo is removable, you could possibly do the same. Only problem might be, as the light is only 10W, it may not be bright enough.
Let us know how you get on.

That's right Steve, I am not convinced it would be bright enough, just my opinion.

Just resurrecting this thread to see if anyone has actually tried these out.

I appreciate that they won't be overly bright / suitable for long distances, but I was thinking more about just projecting up to the ceiling over the dance floor, so normally just in front of the booth. Unless the ceiling is particularly high, that isn't going to be a long distance.

So, has anyone bought one? Have you tried printing your own logos on transparencies? Was it very awkward to get it the right size / fit it tidily in the holder, etc? What's your verdict overall?

Actually, it's better than I expected!

It's a very small unit, and no, don't expect it to project sharp huge images on to the wall across a large function room (not that we've tried, mind you) but we have given it a go a couple of times during the last week in a live situation (floor, ceiling or wall), and it works really well.

You need to get the right transparencies and create a good quality image and print to start with; plus the gobo retaining clip is designed very badly and needs a little bit of 'altering' (1 minute and a pair of pliers :p ) but I think the result is pretty decent, and it's got a few 'ooohs' and 'ahhs' from guests at the two functions we've used it at.

Very difficult to get a good photo, because it's rotating and so the photos tend to look more blurred that the image does in reality (must take a still from a short video we've got to show it better), but anyway, here's an idea of what it's like (projected down on to the dance floor area from the overhead bar):-

I think that looks good. Given the effort involved are you going to be using it as an add-on service or just something for the extra wow factor and to differentiate your service from others ?

Corabar Entertainment
20-09-2011, 03:59 PM
TBH, the effort has been in working out the best way to do it / which programs work best to produce the best image / how is best to cut it out, etc.

The effort in producing a gobo for an event is now very minimal, and could be done in a matter of minutes!

So, to answer your question, the latter - "something for the extra wow factor and to differentiate your service from others" :)

That looks good Angela. What was projector again? Was it the Chauvet?

I used to do these years ago with a none led light. The acetate used to get very hot. But most of the time it wasn't too bad.
I may look into this again. As has been said, not as an add on, just part of the service.

It w also good at christmas. I used to project Santa's and snowmen onto the walls :)

Sorry, don't know how I missed this thread - I too have one of these and certainly think it's worth the price. The fact that the fixture costs less than 2 custom made gobo's is certainly worth having a go.

I found getting OHP film to print on a bit of a pain - should have looked on e-bay sooner. I can fit 30 gobos on one A4 sheet so I made a couple for most weddings in the diary at the same time. Getting a really good print is important - my Epson ink jet and HP laser jet were not good enough. Fortunately Toby printed a sheet for me (bless him) it was still a bit of a fiddle. In the future I may try the print desk in Staples pr a similar store - then getting it right is their problem, not mine. It's just getting the black to be black and not greyscale.

My only gripe with the fixture is that the slow revolve is still a little fast - it is DMX'able but I don't want to run extra cables to and from it. It isn't as bright as I'd like but not bad once the room lights are down.

Looking at the YouTube videos from Rockin' Rob and a few others in the U.S. it seems there are more of these on the way.

Sorry to resurrect this thread - but I found like you - a solid black is hard to achieve on a OHP when using an inkjet printer.

I have also tried a Xerox Phaser printer that uses hot wax with fairly good results but not that brilliant - very much hit and miss.

So if anyone knows the secret of printing solid blacks on OHP vinyl I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks
