2nd Ask today. Have a wedding next weekend and the request list say the following:

Music styles required: Soul, Funk, Motown, 60/70's rock, modern rock

Music styles to avoid: 80's/90's pop, all pop power ballads, house music, cheesy

So I am really going to have fun with my usual set!!!!

My question is really to get a better understanding what might be meang by "Soul & Funk". I have obviously left messages for thr bride and grrom asking for a couple of examples, but I had a bad bad experience with 80's soul last year and don't want it to be repeated. However, if we are talking 80's soul weekender type stuff, surely that fits into the 80's op that they don't want.

I would imagine 80's soul & funk would be some of the following:

Imagination
Shalamar
Patti Labelle
Mai Tai
McFadden & Whitehead
The Fatback Band

or am I completely off the mark?

You obviously need to check with the Brdie & Groom regarding what they actually mean but I would be looking at (for 80's Soul) tracks like these:-

Luther Vandross - Never too much;
Alexander O'Neal - What's missing / Critisize;
Jocelyn Brown - Somebody else's guy;
New Shoooz - I Can't wait;
Chaka Khan & Rufus - Ain't nobody;
plus McFadden & Whitehead/Fatback Band (as already suggested).

I'm sure others have got their own suggestions but these would be mine. :teeth:

It really does depend on what the B/G define as Soul & Funk !!!!!

DMC do a Soul and Funk box set. We have this box set and it came in useful last night. We picked this up for around £35

http://store.dmcworld.com/detail.asp?id=994

But as Ian said, you do need to check with the B&G to see what they mean by Soul and Funk, but something for you to ponder anyway :)

AG's has this one right as before the soul/funk scene it was just soul

No it wasn't, soul and funk have always been concurrent and interchangeable, James Brown, Aretha, Wilson Picket, Curtis Mayfield et al, always slipped seamlessly from one to the other, this is why I don't like pigeonholing- some people don't want to fit, and each track can easily be placed in a different category.

That would explain the gap between '70s rock & modern rock :teeth:

This would probably go down quite well if you can get hold of it (http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/100065/Pure_Groove/Product.html)

Edit I forgot hyperlinks have been temporarily disabled, copy & paste the http:// www .play.com/Music/CD/4-/100065/Pure_Groove/Product.html bit into your address bar to find out what I would use amongst others.

Rice, think you need to get a lot more info from these people.

Soul and Funk from when? 60s, 70s 80s? Anything from Sam and Dave to
Kool and the Gang to Whitney Houston?

For older people ( like me) Kool were originally a Hardcore Funky Band and the Rolling Stones were a blues /pop band---to people your age they are now a Soul/Pop Band and Rock band respectively.

If they like Motown that suggests they are either older people--no discrimination thats illegal :teeth: -or 60s fans---which opens up lots of questions.

Also what do they mean by 60s and 70s rock. Is that the Rolling Stones?
Is that Free? Bachman Turner Overdrive? Do they want Rock? Heavy Rock, Rock n Roll --it gets worse.

Modern rock? presume you are happy about that?

I would ask them to name some tracks they specifically want--at least gives you a clue and avoids any embarrasment on the night.

Whats the first dance? that might give a clue--I had to play Stone Roses last night as first dance for B and G ----I thought it was awful!( personal opinion)

At all costs get in touch with these people as their request has distinct cross-overs.
I'd imagine that the Soul and Funk will be that of the 60's and 70's not the 80's they have stipulated no 80's, it depends on whether they class Luther, George Benson etc as 80's or funk.
For soul i'd imagine they mean the stax/atlantic stuff as they've indicated already Motown. They also may want the Philly sound, O'Jays, Harold MElvin, Intruders,MFSB ....
For Funk - early Kool & the Gang, The Fatback Band, War, Con Funk-Shun, Blackbyrds, Early EW&F, Parliament, Funkadelic, definitely James Brown and all formats thereof, Maceo & the Macks, the JB's, Lynda Collins, Gil Scott-Heron etc...
Good luck

Parliament, Funkadelic,
A lot of their stuff could be a bit leftfield for a lot of people, but if they like that sort of stuff Bootsy Colins would go down well too.

What about War? Lowrider always goes down well (except with Angela :teeth: )

I have now spoken to the groom and have a clearer understanding - but help still greatfully recieved!

He says that they like older soul and funk. Much like:

James Brown
Funky Motown
and 70's soul / Funk that you can dance to, not slow stuff

Does that help at all?

Got the impression that the new Scissor Sisters track would fit the bill too

Rice--you couldnt get them to give list of favourite tracks?

Still sounds a bit vague--Funky Motown--not sure what that is ?

Jacksons?

60s Soul is brilliant--Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett, Arthur Conley, Otis Redding,
Sam and Dave etc

Good luck with it anyway--if its 70s Disco style then thats easy--Sister Sledge, Chic, Donna Summmer etc. maybe even Night Fever stuff?

Great selection Soundtracker--but hey wheres Bus Stop by the Fat Back Band--that was THE tune of the mid 70s for Disco/Soul

Rice-had a look in Tescos-they have "Wedding Album" on sale.

Noticed a couple of classic Soul artists (dont think mentioned so far)
Barry White and Rose Royce

Hurrah,

an email arrived today with the following suggestions from the groom:

Soul Man, Sam & Dave

I Want You Back, Jackson 5

This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You), The Isley Brothers

Build Me Up Buttercup, The Foundations

Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, The Blues Brothers

All This Love That I'm Giving, Gwen McCrae

Brothers On the Slide, Cymande Renegades of Funk

Which does help a little more!

Also now found out that they are also using a company called "party lights" www.partylights.co.uk who seem to have planned to completely deck out the room I'm in with twinkly lights and uplighters - it just gets better!
