Right, as mooted on my recent gallery thread, Mic stands, used by young, old or not at all? I suspect a poll might be interesting.

As most of you know, I'm not in the first flush of youth, though in many ways, my brain still is. Some of my practices are hard wired into what's left of my brain, and right at the front is that the microphone should be in a stand. It should be in the correct position for speaking into, and switched on ( or perferably unswitched ). Mute button on mixer when needed. At yesterday's christening, it came in handy, for those moments when the small persons did something humorous/baffling/cheeky/whatever. By merely leaning forward, you are able to drop in the bon mot, witticism, or reassurance needed. No fumbling around for the blasted thing, loud pop as you hit the switch, thump as you drop it on the deckstand, or people wanting to have a "shout out for ........... ". If you use the mic for more than saying "The buffet/bar is opening/closing", then surely it's the only option? I push more than one button at once, and I can't be doing with having a handful of microphone. I don't multitask well.

Wireless mics. I am happy to operate with one of these in my hand and push the buttons. Is it because there's no cable? :confused: :confused: I almost never put a wireless mic in a stand. Haven't done for many many years. I do love wireless mics for the freedom they give you. On occasion, I've been known to dash out from behind the fortifications, and do various things not easily achieved when you're behind the decks.

I always used a boom mic stand with wired mic; you never know when you're going to need that second hand!

Always had a radio mic on a second channel for the front-of-decks work too.

I have never used a mic stand for DJing. I have used one for karaoke though.

I have a very smal tripod mic stand on my PO with a wired mic and also my wireless one for when I come out from the booth

I do. I like to have both hands free regardless of whether the Mic is wired or not. :)

Why? The radio mic can be removed from the stand as and when I need to manoeuvre away from the booth - it's the best of both worlds. Makes perfect sense to me. :p

A long long time ago, somebody told me that you could use a radio mic as a wired one,( static, and in a stand ) but you couldn't satisfactorily use a wired one as a radio mic. ;)

During the first dance springs to mind. I'll be talking on the mic, one of my hands will be on the play button and the other hand on the mixer fader. 2 hands and mic used all at once.

Could I find a way of doing it without using the mic stand? Sure I could, but again it's just a matter of preference, I feel more comfortable and feel I have more flexibility using one. :)

I have a 12 inch goose-neck ( Moss Bros hate me !! ;) :D ), fitted to my playout case, and a floorstanding stand for when I feel like using my 50's retro NJD Mic. :o :D

Doing lots of weddings, I agree with the benefits of being able to have the mic in front of you whilst one hand is on the play button and the other on the mixer slider. I've tried a Shure wired headset before but I kept forgetting I was wearing it and then walking away and it coming flying off my head! Not good!

I've never used a stand and didnt like the way it looked in other photos in the gallery section but Shauns looks fab I have to say.

My karaoke nights on Mondays have been a new challenge when trying to mute the karaoke channel on the mixer, turn mine on, grab the mics off the singers, ask everyone to "put their hands together" and then bring in the music has been a right ball buster. Too many things to do at once so grabbing some stands off Martin tomorrow and hoping that'll help.

Generally there is two of us at most gigs. So one of us is on the microphone & operating the mixer whilst the other is mixing it up and cueing tracks etc.

However on the occasion when its a lone rider situation, then yeah a mic stand is used.

Nowadays a serious Radio Mike with a switch that doesnt crackle ( Am I going to recommend JTS or Shure--I certainly am ;) ) placed stategically in a trouser ( in my case Jeans) pocket sticking out and ready to grab like a gun from a holster ( oh dear Cowboy connotations again)

Whipped out like a Colt 45 and switched on in the blink of an eyelid for timely comments, announcements and put downs.

I have some disused mike stands in my garage if your buying :D

Alternatively of course--head set mike--if you can find a really good one let me know--I tried and failed unless your talking really silly money of course---im not:D

Yep, all fixed. :) Sent off on the Tuesday, it was returned to my doorstep on the Thursday. Now that's quality service for you. Pity they sliced through the carry-case with a stanley knife whilst opening the packaging. :eek:

Still not DMXd. I'm actually quite impressed with it as is if I'm honest. :)

In saying that, I don't think it looks great, so if I were to start using a stand I'd want it out of view :)
