broken my external hdd

have just tripped over the cable to my external hdd for about the god knows how many times not surprisingly its now not working any suggestions on a replacement about 1tb should be fine with external psu as the laptop psu has enough with it and the omni running off it at the moment

it might be fixable? try a different usb cable? or remove the drive and install in a different caddy?

have a friend at work who is quite handy in the pc department thankfully its only used as a back up

Whatever you do---either fix the cable with Duck Tape or Velcro before you kill yourself on a booking---the client would never talk to you again:D

at the time was plugged in to my main pc at the front and a power socket by the side and i caught the cable yet again...... this time it looks terminal . when its set up for a disco all the leads will be at the back all velcroed and stuck down and hidden out the way by the mandatory star cloth lol

Rather illustrates the point--which I have fallen foul of--for the Performer its often more dangerous setting up and taking down than during the event.:(

In the meantime, definitely try swapping the lead.... you may find that's all that's wrong.

Agreed. And since it's a powered one, I believe, also see if the power cable has been damaged. I know some folk have had a lot of trouble with power cables.

The hard drive should be a casing now you have to distroy the casing to get the hard drive this is done so that they can tell under warentee if you have played about with it.

In your case it aint going back so nothing to loose so just snap the lugs off so you can get it out.

Now you will find a small pcb on the back of the hard drive you might find that the wires have been pulled from here and just need to solider them back on.

Sadly this is about all you do you can not pull the hard drive apart if you do then it will self distruct ie fall about in millions of pieces.

Even if you do they are set up in a dust free area and one spec will take the thing out for ever any way.

What I did was to buy the same hard drive again for get the warrentee and pull that apart put the board on the old one copy the info to another hard drive then put the back on the new one and gaffa the thing together.

Now you have a spare hd the cost of these now are about £60 quid and now even cheaper than that.

Look at MaplinsI was told they had 1tb £46 and 1.5 at £75 half a tb was £60 which i found strange.
