Where's the line with backup?

Well guys...forgot to post this last week :o

Where does it stop with back-up equipment?

I carry backup mixer, speaker, laptop, and pretty much have every eventuality...nearly that is!

I was working about 3 miles from home last saturday for my wedding and had a piece of equipment fail on me...a bloody speaker stand!... the only thing I didnt have a spare on me for. Luckily I noticed it wasnt tightening up properly during set-up, so had the time to nip home and grabbed a replacement.

Had I not been so near to home I would have been royally screwed...so where do you draw the line? Spare kitchen sink in the van anyone....

My Playout system is:

1 x Denon HD2500 with 120GB Internal Hard Drive + 1TB External Hard Drive
1 x Macbook Pro running Virtual DJ Pro (Version 7) + 1TB External Hard Drive

Backup:

1 x Windows 7 Laptop running Virtual DJ 7 (Version 7)
1 x 1TB Hard Drive
1 x BU4500 CD Drawers for the Denon HD2500

If things get really desperate:

1 x iPod
1 x iPhone

I also carry a spare mixer...a Behringer VMX1000 and spares lamps, fuses etc.

We'll thats about standard...but what if you had a stand...T-bar/ultimax/spaker/whatever fail on you...do you have enough backup to sort that issue?

For most gigs I carry a second Ultimax stand, a spare front curtain, including brackets for the extra curtain, spare knobs, spare thumbscrews, spare pins and a spare top casting.
You may think I’m joking, but I’m not. :o
I think you draw the line where something isn’t critical for the running of the disco, e.g. in your case the speaker would have had to sit on the floor, not ideal but the disco could still go on.

Some things you just have to live without if they pack up. If you carried 2 of EVERYTHING, you would be carrying another disco and that would take up double space to transport.

If it was me and I wasn't close to home, the speaker would go on the floor.

i tend to agree - the vital things are the ones that allow you to play music if something fails - so spare tripods, etc would be an unnecessary burden

But the client may have seen photographs of your set ups with speaker stands, and be really disappointed when they see you haven't got any :o

I really cant see the James H booth breaking only thing I don't carry spare is the uprights for the overhead and speaker stands.

Can I be totally anal and say I do carry a spare speaker stand :sofa:

The only reason is, as mentioned in the op, I had one fail on me due to one of the nuts somehow managing to work its way free. Simple repair was made, thanks to B&Q but I now carry one just in case.

I also carry a keyboard stand and small t-bar. Sometimes they get used instead of the stand if I find access is more awkward :o

In fact if I look at it I do actually carry almost 2 full disco setups, however the second setup consists of small, lightweight items. Reason for doing this is if something breaks I can't be :Censored: fixing it then and there.

Backup carried (if anyone interested)

1 speaker stand
keyboard stand
2u mixer - racked up ready to go once speakers plugged in.
Laptop with vdj and loaded with about 6000 popular mp3's
Cables - carry loads in a wheeled box as often not sure exactly what required
spare bulbs - but tbh by the time the lighting effect cools and due to hassle I would probably not change at a gig
2 acme firebird lights - good enough to give light in an emergency
socks, underpants etc :o

With the exception of the stands everything is in a wheeled container so easy to lift from garage to car, then back again.

I doubt very much a client would notice unless they are a DJ :p


I do not have spare stand as I have a 10 inch sub and a pole, or a venue table as has been
pointed out and would suffice TBH (even on the floor in a small gig).
I often put mine on furniture at big houses/manors to blend in with the surroundings.
They are also much safer there.

Other than the basics (playout, sound etc.). AA cover, a small mixer with loads of leads, wireless mic new in box.
I must say health product like dioreah tablets and pain killers are a must in a emergency.
- also deodrant, mouthwash, doorstop (from paul), shoe polish spare pair or pants and socks etc.

I always double up my bag of m&m's however. Just in case I run out mid gig :)
