first pub disco

hello everyone I'm going to be doing my first proper gig on Saturday the 30th April its a pub disco and I'm a bit nevus

as this is my first disco could you please help me by suggesting songs that are played at discos

Get yourself some request slips done or keep mentioning over the microphone that you take requests. Once the punters get the idea that you will play ANYTHING (because that's generally what pubs are like), they'll do most of the work for you.

What you play will really depend on what the pub's punters like.

Do you know the pub? Do you know the sort of clientèle that frequent it? Have you discussed with the landlord what sort of night he/she would like it to be? (eg request fest, party night, themed, targeting 18-25yr olds, etc etc)

Purely out of curiosity, where is the pub? (I used to live in Chesham)

Chalfont st peter its just a general disco if it goes good she will give me 1 a month or more so have to make a good impression it will be good

The important thing is not to try to be too clever, just stick to the well-established standards (see the Music Forum "Top Ten" lists for inspiration), but be prepared to accept requests on the night. If you don't have what they ask for, apologise politely and say you'll have it next time. ;). Make sure you do though !! :)
Your list for the Engagement party is a good starter, but you may have to jiggle it around a bit till you find what floats their boat ;)

If it's the first one at the pub, you may find that a lot of what you're playing will effectively be background music, especially at the beginning, so watch carefully and see what response each tune brings to give you an idea of what path to go down.

Just mix it up between current chart and some classics. Ask yourself what the average person who goes in the pub listens to whether it be Radio 1, Heart FM or just what they hear on various TV shows.

You cant really playlist this type of night so just play a good variety. Don't play anything too ravey early on until people want to dance.

You may find it is just the youngsters who want to dance so carry a good selection of all the latest tracks,

I guess another thing to bear in mind is to have one eye on what the landlady likes and indulge her a few tracks which might help you get future gigs :D

Hello Mr b, Im from chesham - used to be resident at the Global - what i found in this area espicially if the pub if full of youngsters - to begin with play chart stuff ( mainly rnb, dance ones they all know) as the night goes on try to throw a few chesse numbers if they work go down that route - If not stick to chart but dont play anything too underground. Like said previously requests will usually guide you through the night. Good luck mate - my 1st gig was in a pub many moons ago

Just have a look through the top ten sections on here.
chart and some killer classics depending on crowd.

and encourage requests (assuming you have them to play)

the worrying about it is 50 times worse than being there doing it.
If you have the tracks and the gear forget about it until the day - two things however.

Sometimes people just will not dance but as long as they are chatting and enjoying themselves you are performing your job.

Also more volume does not equate to more people dancing. Quite the opposite in most cases.
Good too keep a happy medium and not drive people away from your performance area.

The musics the easy part tbh. Good reliable kit is paramount.

Another question - Do you know the venue well? Have they had Discos in there before?

I have this theory. I know my local well, very well...I've been going down there for 25 years but have been DJing there for around 5 years. I know the punters, the music that they like etc etc....When I am not DJing there and the jukebox is being used, the music that is picked is along the lines of what I play. Yes, you could ask "Why do they need a DJ then?" and I wouldn't blame you but the DJ thing brings a totally different atmosphere. You can also give out shouts to people who have requested certain tracks, have a laugh and make birthday announcements and let people know about future events etc...

Anyway, back to my theory (seeing as I went off on one then)....

When people go 'clubbing' at the weekend (generally to clubs or bars that play Chart/RnB/Dance music etc), they are going out to have a good dance and more than likely go on the pull etc etc...If they are going to the likes of (example) 'Liquid' or a 'proper' nightclub, they know what they are going to get. They go out in 'club' mode. If people go to the pub and put tunes on the jukebox, it's usually classics that they pick. This is just my experience...I don't often hear that much chart or dance music in pubs in my area. I know some guys that go up to London to go clubbing at the weekends but if they are down the pub in the week, they'll put the likes of Oasis, Green Day, 80's etc on the jukebox. It's because the pub environment is different in my opinion. They go to hear good music rather than dance to it.

Yes, you get people dancing in the pub I do but it's more that they want to listen to good music. You get people requesting lots of tunes and the fact that you actually play them, keeps them in the pub so that they don't go anywhere else....this means that the landlord/landlady is happy because it's more money in the tills for them and that's a good thing. One of the things I do is to watch people....If someone comes up and asks for a track and they are nearly finishing their drink, I'll make sure that they have another one before I play their request (they don't know this) so I keep them in the pub longer. You will also find that if people walking into the pub find it's a good atmosphere, they'll stay and join in. If the place is empty or with no atmosphere, people may move on elsewhere.

One of the things I do is keep and eye on the door too - If I see people come in, I will get on the mic and say "If you've just joined us, good evening" and I'll mention what is happening...."It's something we call 'Request Fest' so anything you want to hear, come and let me know....it doesn't matter what style of music is it" etc etc... People DO listen and once they know you really will play anything they like, they'll start requesting tunes.

My local, in the seventies, was the Half Moon at Cholesbury Common :beer1:
Played many a game of cricket on the green, both for and against Cholesbury :o ;)
