Direct from youtube

Just lately I have had 2 clients on 2 different occasions ask for requests that I didn't have at the time and I said "I am sorry I don't have that in my collection right now".

They saw I use a laptop and they said it is on Youtube, can you play it straight off there ?
My response was No, its not legal. They said they have seen DJs do it before.

I think its the fault of the well known "tutor" on youtube lol

Anyone else been asked to play straight of youtube ?

No, it hasn't happened to me as yet but I'm sure it will do at some point.

I have even had people bring up songs on their phone and ask me to plug it into my speakers and play it. It seems an insult to them when you say No. Technology has a lot to answer for !

Been asked for a certain "Live" song and when i explained i didn't have it but will do my best to source it they explained it's the one on youtube can't you rip it off there :eek: when i also explained no they said well if we get it off there and give it you will you :eek: after i explained the reasons why not they fully understood but to make matters worse it is there first song request :(

But i have no mange to source it and rang the client and was told i had made her day :D

It seems silly to them that they can get a song on their phone and play it to all their friends, but we are not allowed to play it through our speakers because it then becomes public performance.

Yeah I have been asked to play directly off YouTube if I didnt have the request. I just shake my head and mime the word no.

I can't even be bothered to educate people with the legalities. Most don't care, they just want thier request played.

There is the legal aspect of it and quality. The compression used for audio is terrible. Ok for small pc speakers but not PA speakers. I wouldn't dare dream of using it.

One girl handed me a CD at a gig last month and said, "Could you play this - it's a special song for the Birthday girl. I ripped it off You Tube!!"

I couldn't believe that she thought I would really play it!

After quickly telling her about dire quality and legalities I said I could play the track as I owned the WAV file and even if I didn't I could buy it via a 3G connection.

The general public have no idea about PRS unless they are business owners who play music.
More to the point most people could not care if they get music for free.

My point was if she saw other DJs doing it then she would think it was acceptable. Im not saying its all down to the tutor but it certainly doesnt help with bad advice being given on youtube, especially when he has quite a big following.

Hands up moment here.... I did this ... ONCE... when, within 5 minutes of the end of an 8 year old's birthday party I had the birthday girl in floods of tears because I didn't have her favourite song. All I had with me connectivity wise was the iphone, and itunes didn't have the song. The only place I could find it was YT, and therefore it had to be done. It was buried in an episode of some tweenie American TV show, and quality wasn't a concern.

But as a rule of thumb, bargepole job :)

Exactly, plus there is so much spotify, mtv too.

I wonder how long it will be before the music industry wakes up and changes the model.

To be honest they may as well give music away for FREE and the artists make money on other ways, sponsorship, advertising, concerts, merchandise.

Much of the computer industry has gone this way, like Google giving away Android, Linux etc, so they are just going to have to get creative about how the industry gets funded.

I offered to do a gig for my mate's sister a few months back at a vastly reduced fee, I was free that night anyway and I owed him one. In the end, I wasn't needed as the venue were supplying a DJ for round about what I had offered so they just went with him.

Fast forward a few days later and I asked my mate how the DJ was. He had tears streaming down his face from laughing about it - the DJ played off YouTube the whole night using 2 laptops and the venue's free WiFi! I asked him how he knew the DJ was using YouTube. His response was every so often, an advert would kick in and they would have to wait until it was finished before the tune would kick in. He did approach the DJ about it and he was quite proud of the fact he could play any song within seconds of it being requested. Apparently sitting down for the whole gig was also the norm.

I should be offended that they didn't book me over the other guy but it apparently was a great talking point of the night, I certainly can't compete with that level of originallity..

Seriously though, not in a million years would I ever play any audio from YouTube at a wedding or gig. When I did video DJing a few years back at a club, I occasionally made my own videos using the video from YouTube and re-dubbing the audio.

That would be great as live performers/artists and writers would prosper and bubble gum crap (ndubs etc.) will not succeed unless backed by merchandising and big business.

concerts will become more abundant and as we all know there is nothing like live music. the DJ industry may decline however especially if AI could judge a dance floor and select the most appropriate tracks to play and mix them seamlessly :eek:
