My gig machine was running out of space , so time to upgrade the hard drive.
The original drive was a Western digital 1600BEV1 , 160gb , 5400 rpm , SATA.
Brought the new drive from PC world This one (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hitachi-travelstar-internal-2-5-sata-hard-drive-320gb-07677898-pdt.html) , when I got home I downloaded a disk copy program http://www.partition-tool.com/ , loaded it up , at the same time I had an old WD 160gb external drive , taking the cover off , I removed the old drive and replaced it with the new 320gb drive , the old drive has a built in SATA to USB board , so push fit the new drive in , connect it to the laptop via the USB cable , the software first gives you a choice of creating a boot disk , I opted for a CD drive , only takes a few seconds to burn the disc , reboot the laptop , follow a few simple instructions , and the disk is copied.
Turn off the laptop , remove the old drive , take the new drive out of the old case , fit into laptop , reboot , finished , copies everything over , windows , boot partition etc , the only problem was the new disc created a partition at the 160gb point , all I did was download http://www.pcdisk.com/download.html and dragged the 160gb partition to fill the whole drive , now shows as a 320gb drive , total time 2 hours
