My SatNav died on me last night (it's an old TomTom model - not sure which one but must be over 6 years old). So I need to get a new one.

Budget isn't an issue. Tempted to stay with TomTom, but open to other makes.

Any recommendations?

Stick with Tom Tom, the wide screens ones are a big improvement on the earlier models.

I'm sure Darren has a really good Tom Tom. IQ or something.

TOM TOM all the way... better even than built in alternatives that manufactures offer (by that I mean Mercedes, renault, ford etc etc...) I should know having a day job in the motor industry :D

You also may want to consider a version on your smart phone if youhave one, but these do eat up battery life, and the screen is obviously not as big, but some prefer that option rather than have yet another thing to worry about in their car!

Yep pretty much thought I'd end up with a TomTom to be honest - but which models are people using? Is it worth going for the top of the range?

I've had a few different models of Sat Nav. Tom Tom wide screen wins hands down for me.

Had to be Tom Tom for me. Anything working on the other mapping system can't find my house!!! Sends you to a farm a mile across the river, with no bridge on that road. :daft:

Only annoying thing is that if you miss out a couple of map upgrades, it then becomes nearly as cheap to buy a new unit, because you have to buy all the missing updates as well.

+ 1 for TomTom - Navman is OK. Nice detailed graphics but the guidance isn't as clear as the tomtom.

I've got the 940 HD traffic version, which has a Google search and live traffic on it. When it works, it is fantastic, especially when you use live services to Google a venue and it navigates you there and gives you information about it.

I have had a few problems with live services not working though.

I have no first hand experience of these, but usually the problem is down to poor signal. Built up areas, tinted windscreens, and internal aerials are all contributory factors.

Not in my case. I had problems with the unit itself and the sim card.

Typical. You just had to be unique, didn't you? :p My advice still stands, in general. ( It just doesn't appear to apply to Darren ;) :D :D )

Got an early birthday present of a TomTom Go Live 1000 today. Girlfriend thought it was better for me to have one before driving up to the Cotswolds to do a wedding this Saturday - I'm notorious for getting lost if left to my own navigational skills!

I can just about live with not having a phone with me, but I must have a Sat Nav.
