Thought it was time to ditch the old Vito and now looking for a new van with a budget of tops 6k.

I know a few guys on here have the ford transits which I think the newer ones have a longer life than the older ones? i.e normally I wouldnt consider a ford with more than 100k or a french make with more than 80k.

Also looking at the payloads, anyone know what the average set up weights with 24 uplighters and a 12x12 dancefloor?

Seen a few ex British Gas and AA vans, anyone had experience of buying one of these before?

I paid £6K for my Primastar 3 years ago and it has been very reliable so far. It has 120K on the clock but vans last up to 200K if looked after.

I've got a 56 plate trafic with 55k on it and going well so far. Picked it up for £5900 with no vat as it was a private sale ;)

Vivaro, Primastar, Trafic all pretty much the same bar the badges.

For Disco work, Sprinters take some beating. The ones with the five cylinder motor fly.

Neil, if you get what they call a "Common Rail Engine", particularly the Fords, the clutches are horrendously expensive. Four figures to swap.

Do not buy anything with a clutch or starter fault. The starter often is a warning of impending clutch problems.

By contrast, the Transit banana engine in my LDV has no heater plugs to fail, no ECU to fail, a clutch costs me £70 for parts, and as long as I change the cambelt, it should keep running.

You pays your money..................................

Just really looking for pointers in regards of mileage on certain models and of course trying to find one without VAT.

Votes for a sprinter or a transit from me mate. I've had quite a few hire vans over the years as well, I'm not a fan of the vivaro, traffic or Iveco dailys.

You can get just over 1ton in the sprinter which is a dance floor, disco and uplighting.

For the £6k mark you may have to look at one a few years old but I'm sure it would be worth it!

Never  I tried the vannete and i had to reve the hell out of it too get it too go anywhere. :p I have to say its well priced for what you get.
I like my Japanese cars but prefer my French Vans.

I got my Partner as it has a bosch fuel pump so it runs very well on a tank of vegetable oil which costs about £5-10 from my local pub:p
Thats the main reason I bought it ;) although before you do this its not quite as simple as it may seem (disclaimer).

Made the mistake of a Lucas pumped Berlingo last time and had oil flowing out everywhere. :D

Got a transit from a local dealership with no VAT to pay result. Its the high top T260 model with 1400kg payload. Had an 18x18ft (I think) dancefloor in it with my rig and it handled that very happily. Handles better than my old vito and got 600 miles from a tank fill (80L) so pretty happy thus far.

id steer away from the mercs they tend to rust? their even trying to give away lifetime bodywork warranty now as long as its main dealer serviced my mate works for a body shop near a merc garage, and they even get ones in that are unregistered for touch ups

might be more to do with our area we are on the coast so things tend to rust quicker down this way, and where a van is purchased and where is been sine new (also remembering things tend to rust from the inside out as only the outside is protected buy the paint unless its rusting from a stone chip in the paint)
