On the site of my beloved footie team (AFC Bournemouth) they have started a thread with the same title as this thread.
There have been some interesting suggestions, namely ... U2, Oasis, Travis, Stone Roses, Pulp, Pink Floyd, Arctic Monkeys and any band with Paul Weller in plus many more.
Just thought it could be an interesting thread on here, your thoughts one and all. http://planetsmilies.net/music-smiley-7545.gif
My three would be Stone Roses, Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead

I think it's very easy to nominate bands you don't like for 'over-rated', but the two are quite different, IMO.
For me though, it's Coldplay, Westlife and (wait for it, because many people are going to say this is heresy......) The Beatles. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the Beatles and they did a load of good pop songs, but I don't think they deserve the god-like status that they have, and therefore think they're over-rated for that reason.

I hear what you say. ( Well see what you type, if we're being picky, but you know what I mean. ) I understand the point you're making, but don't think I can agree wholeheartedly. Food for thought.
Still can't find three of my own, though. :o

Some of the choices are ridiculous imo, but I suppose if you don't like them you're never going to praise them too highly, therefore drawing your own conclusion of 'they're overated'

Immensely, how else would you account for the popularity of such a boring flaccid band (hell they make Coldplay sound interesting & exciting by comparison).

Bands to me have always been a bunch of people who can actually play musical instruments and write their own material.
Not pretty boys who can dance like Westlife Boyzone and others of that ilk

Well I'm quite amazed to see so many mentions for Radiohead, as I find their music (along with Pink Floyd) to have more depth and longevity than anyone else's.
I'm also pretty sure that those who have nominated Radiohead haven't actually bothered to listen to their material properly, which is understandable because it really isn't very accessible. Everything from OK Computer onwards you really have to 'force' yourself to listen to it two or three times before you even begin to appreciate it.
If you're looking for a straight-up guitar riff and sing-along chorus, they're not going to be for you, and although that might sound a bit condescending, it is pretty much how it is.
A similar principle applies to a lot of Morrissey/Smiths, albeit on a smaller scale - the songs just won't 'grab you' after just a couple of listens.
I think it's very easy to nominate bands you don't like for 'over-rated', but the two are quite different, IMO.I agree, and I think a lot of that is happening on this thread.
For example, Westlife are in no way an overrated band!! Who is it that is rating them? They don't receive critical acclaim, or praise from their musical peers. Fair enough they sold (notice - past tense) a load of records and still have a huge fanbase, but other than that, they're not highly rated.
It's funny you should say that, because I've long thought that, but recently (well, the start of the year) I borrowed my Dad's Anthology collection to finally pass judgement on them.
I've now listened through it three times, and have singled out the tracks which I would personally add to my collection, which are :
Julia
All You Need Is Love
Do You Want To Know A Secret
Yesterday
The Fool On The Hill
Your Mother Should Know
Blue Jay Way
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Michelle
Hello, Goodbye
Sexy Sadie
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Not Guilty
Because
Free As A Bird
What's The New Mary Jane
Lady Madonna
I'm So Tired
Something
...and most of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
The amount of generic, bland pop songs I had to listen through was actually unreal. You can understand why they did it though, with such a captive audience of screaming teenagers, and no real competitors until a few years later.
I didn't really appreciate their blues-influenced material either, again it was just a bit dull and uninspired.
By the way, don't take this as a 'dig' at them either - I have a lot of respect for them, and the way they pushed the boundaries and raised the bar for pop music. Most of the tracks I mentioned above I also think are outstanding.
I will second Angela's vote for The Beatles though :)
My missus would have said Bob Dylan - she doesn't get his appeal in the slightest!Agreed on that too.
There are so many other artists that I could mention too, but how about some newer ones - David Guetta and Black Eyed Peas.

Can't speak for the others, but that is certainly not true of me, I've tried and tried to find the "something" in it that people rave about, but, for me, it's just not there, I've even left it for a good while, and then gone back and tried again, still nothing! I do like creep - which they don't!

Come on folks, how can The Beatles be overrated?
Ok granted, they have lots of crap songs, but in my book, a good songwriter should write 4 duds for every one good song.
You're talking about Lennon & McCartney here, these two paved the way for everyone else, they broke so many boundaries, without them, and George Martin to a certain extent, the music world might have been a different place.
Radiohead are a class band as well, better than 95% of the generic (insert profanity here) that's around at the moment.

Their playing ability ( Beatles ) as performers was nothing special--their songwriting and prolific output of new material world class.
I think thats why they are respected.
Depends what your rating people on.
Also is this because some nominations are not popular picks for the Mobile DJ market or something else, Coldplay I cant stand but apparently they sell out concerts?
Pick me any 3 Modern Rnb type acts or Rapping types other than Black Eyed Peas, Christine Ag and Beyonce--that will do me.;)

I really don't think you can say the Beatles are overrated. The influence they have had on pop music is up there with Elvis Presley and other great acts. Look at the songs they penned.
I was a teenager when the Beatles were at their height and it was amazing. I think people who lived through the Beatles era would have a different perception of those that didn't. Having said that I really do not like their music now, I never ever play it unless requested, I find it boring.
Their influence, though can never be understated. [img]http://planetsmilies.net/music-smiley-7528.gif[/img

Really pleased that the Beatles are in there as frankly I've always thought they were sh:Censored: te (I'm sure McCartney is gutted lol).
Other than that it would have to be Dizzee Rascal and Plan B.
I have arguments about U2 with my father in law all the time. I think they remain very relevant and like all great bands have successfully moved with the times. Coldplay aren't overrated.....they are just "safe", you can play Coldplay at any family barbecue and nobody will notice there is music on!
I love Kasabian..........however I walked off after 20 minutes at V Festival last year because they were cr:Censored: p!
They walked on and the singer announced "We're the biggest band in the world!!!" They weren't even the biggest band on the bill. Kn:Censored: b!
