I get really anooyed when someone bugs you play a tune that is gonna clear the dancefloor

Last week I was bugged to play Leonna Lewis bleeding love

the women would not leave me alone - I only had the slow version - floor was packed and she wanted to sing to it - I told her to go away in the end

An hour later and you look about and that person is still there!

People who want a request "Next".

With Bar and Club work - My response to "play my song next, Im leaving soon" is

"But you are about to leave? I will play YOUR request at a suitable time. I'm sorry that you have decided to leave, stick around and you'll get to hear it" :D

You cant really do that at private functions, but "play my song next!" instantly gets my back up.

....and guests that say "can you play something with a beat I can dance to?" WTF is that all about... :daft: :daft: :daft:

"You must play my tune next because we're leaving!"

That must be the most common line with a request and they are always there an hour later.

The other one is "Play something decent...".

Ok, what do you class as 'decent'?

"Er......?...I dunno, anything but this"

But the dancefloor is busy and people seem to like it.

"But I don't!"

I'm sorry but that's not my fault. If you can think of a couple of tracks you like and I will see if I have them.

"No, it's ok....don't bother!"

They then go off in a strop because they haven't got what they wanted and although everyone else is having a great time, they aren't and they think it's rubbish.

You know what comes next.....They come back, request a tune and (sometimes, to keep them happy), you play it...It empties the dancefloor and because no'one else is dancing, they don't bother either so you cut it short to get everyone back. They then come over and ask why you've cut their tune and you explain the situation....

People who think that they know better than we do.

Jeez how long have you got??

1 - its 7.30pm and an anooying woman (its always women btw) comes up and says ''come on dj, get it going, look at the floor, nobodys is dancing''. Obviously nobody is dancing love, its 7.30pm, theres 20 people here that are chatting. Moron.

2 - ''Ive lost my friend, can you make an announcement please.''

3 - Can you play some Deep Purple?

4 - When someone does the cut throat sign to a record being played.

5 - Can you play ''insert song here'' and say its for jay who died last week.

6 - When women (its always women) look at the dj, put one hand on their ear to represent a headphone and make a scratching movement with their other hand.

Im sure i can think of more as the day goes on.

When they do not react or shut up when your trying to introduce something - especially first dance.

I dont mind requests. I will tell them if it is awful and then play it but say their name as the dance floor disappears.
People are not silly they know that thier track is rubbish and affected the party.
Its the selfish people that annoy me and do not care about anyone else.

People asking for songs/artists that are actually playing when they ask - if they aren't even listening what's the point of asking!

People holding up toddlers to ask for a song in the middle of a busy party - chances are the poor child isn't going to ask for a floor filler - and then you feel bad telling it NO!

People asking to go through your CD's (or worse, doing it without asking). People who ask 'what have you got?' Usually the same person when it's a no the previous. (going digital has put paid to that little game!)

Playing a request and then being told the person was out of the room and can you play it again. (even more annoying if you announced it).

Bedroom DJ's who keep telling you what to play next - buy some gear and get your own gigs!

Smug gits who ask for a really obvious tune that you were going to play anyway giving you a big thumbs up and nodding towards the dancefloor as if they are totally responsible for it's success.

I had written a reply earlier but actually thought to myself it doesnt really annoy me just rather find it sad that people drink and treat myself like something off the bottom of their shoe.

Now seeing Toby's post I have to say it really does grind my gears when people can see you talking on the microphone and keep talking. How bloody rude is that! It really does make my blood boil and none of the other "cons" of the job do.

i get it probably one out of ten gigs if that.

I know it is not me. Its not as if i am stuck behind a booth and sluring my words. I do think its as clear as you can get now and I am out amongst them. i always ask twice for silience and tell them whats going to happen and even leave dead pauses.

I just end up getting on with it and they usually stop as first dance happens or what ever.
its probably the club culture and people are so used to uninterrupted music at events etc. Usually happens with lots of younger guests. :)

Its not my party or wedding - as long as they pay attention to who or what I am announcing then thats fine. Now that is rude when they dont! If your invited to a wedding you at least pay attention too the first dance or speeches, no matter how bored you are. I had a table in an indian restaurant wedding from up north. They were decent folk but had no idea about how to act at a formal event and carries on chatting during the speeches (loudly).

I just kept turning the speaker up on their side the more the talked. :D

Another one the other day (again northerners) (I have nothing against northerners by the way - we seem to do things a bit differently down here :D i bet your parties are much more fun). Anyway during the ceremony in a very nice hotel. the guy kept handing his baby his bunch of keys. what happens CRASH on the wooden floor, and again CRASH etc. etc. I could not believe it. Same thing with the speeches, talking and walking in and out all the time while everyone was sat their.

I did a wedding about 5 years ago & the bride had told me what she wanted, father of groom keeps coming up asking for achy breaky heart saying they'll dance, told him bride didn't want that kind of music (wanted boybands mainly) Eventually to shut him up, I killed a song playing & announced the father of the groom said you'd all dance to this & played it. The floor emptied faster than :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored:e through a goose ! Funny he didn't bother me after that & even told me at the end I was brilliant !

I always say you can plug your iPod in if you can 100% guarantee the sings are tagged, legal & checked for spyware & virus. If they ask if I can play a cd the answers no as a 00DJ doesn't have one ! (it does but I never use it)

I had one recently were a lady had literally walked in and demanded i play BEP - Dirty Bit.... when i said i will later as atm im in the middle of soul and northern soul and motown she had the biggest lip on and the dirty looks i got were wicked lol

I know just smile and take it on the chin, i used to worrie and try and play them asap but now bugger it heard all the excuses and thats all they are.

but i still like the "I'm going soon", to which i reply (similar to whats been said) if your going then you will miss it as its in 5/6 more songs (i make the amount up) and hell's bell's there still there in 8/9 more songs waiting lol

People using my subs as storage for their drinks... I remove them straight away. I rarely use the subs, but its a common problem when I do.
Tonights gig will see this :(

"play it now!" requests/demands.
I try to establish who the guest is... I attempt to be polite to everyone, but are more polite to some than others ;)

That's really it. I don't mind drunk people (providing they are not aggressive), and don't mind not drinking when working (I'm more than capable of having a few pints when not working!)

I'm also not that worried if a guest gets upset with my choice of music. They are very welcome to hire their own gear and spend each weekend DJing...
(yes... I told one guest this! She decided I was right, and you can't please everyone -but I guess I was lucky that night! lol)

When someone comes to see me, I make the effort to smile, and ask them to come to the side (so they are not waving their drink over the front of my booth). This way, I don't have tell them to take their drink away, and it shows me as being friendly. I normally say thank-you, so do try to come across as being friendly - these people can often be your future business..

When the crowd start shouting and asking why the music has stopped, just reply "so-and-so over there indicated that I cut the music so I assumed there was a problem":D
Then let him explain that in his opinion the music you were playing was unsuitable and you should cut the track immediately;)

Guests asking for known football songs.
You end up getting in to a no win situation. If you don't play it, the guest gets annoyed. If you do play it, which I very rarely do, you end up getting someone from an opposing team saying, if you played their track, you need to play mine.

Damn right I would

Once you've done that neither that person or anyone else at that function is going to do that again, so you won't have to ignore anything because they won't be doing it again.

It's a no brainer win win solution

And what makes it perfect is that everyone there will quite understand why you cut the music when someone gave you the sign to cut the music.

As happened at one of last weeks weddings, women came up at 12:55am as I'm winding it down and playing the last couple of tracks, can you play some old school dance. I said if you had aked me half hour ago I could have got some in no problem, but as it's now 5 to I'm afriad I'm not going to be able to. To which I got a mouthful of abuse.

Same venue(Mitton Hall), different wedding. Bunch of guys realise that if they sing loud they can trip the sound limiter, and thought it was funny to keep doing it. Bride and myself got a little fed up with that and the Bride sorted them out! Not a problem at this venue anymore, the function manager has got that fed up of the sound limiter he has virtually disabled it by putting tape over the sound limiter mic!!!

End of night, great night full floor all night. Not a single word of thanks from, Bride and Groom or any other guests. Does not happen very often to me, but annoys me when it does.

It makes everything seem worthwhile just for someone to say thanks for a great night.
We did a Rugby Club end of season do the other night, and they were fantastic at the end, telling us what a great night they had had, and gave us a hand down the 2 flights of stairs with all the gear at the end. The ones that never offer and almost sneer at you as you are packing up do my nut in.
