Downloading requests on the night

I know it's been discussed in the past but I've just taken a booking this evening based solely on being able to download a song from iTunes at a gig. Last Friday was a Rat pack theme night and one of the guests asked for 'Matt Munro - The Impossible Dream'. She said it's currently featured in a card advert just now? To be honest I wasn't familair with it but had a look. As it turned out I didn't have it, but I mentioned I'd try get it and include it later in the evening.

Ipad - iTunes - 10 minutes later....voila.

She made a point of coming over to thank me at the end of the evening to thank me, and let me know that she had lifted my request card off the table so she could keep a hold of my details.

Tonight she called to book me for her 70th Birthday later in the year. When we spoke she said she was really impressed that I managed to find and play her request.

So... if I wasn't completely convinced about downloading 'on the night', I am now. a 99p download has turned into a nice paying booking.

I thanked god that I reset Safari on Sunday morning as the internet in my venue does not usually work.

I turned up with the wrong version of sex bomb for first dance and for some reason had lost the other one. downloaded in a minute and then the internet shut off for the rest of the night. Phew!!

He had it on his iphone but thats not very professional or legal for that matter.

I was looking at getting an ipad but got a digi mini and netbook instead for back up.
My phone is due for upgrade soon so will get iphone instead. most my venues are in the middle of knowhere anyway :D

Oddly enough, I did exactly the same thing at the weekend. I had a last minute request for a Father of the Bride dance, and the song was "Jennifer Juniper" by Donovan. iPhone to the rescue!

However, one thing I need to work out (and if I remember correctly, Darren very kindly gave me an answer that I've long since forgotten the last time we had this thread) is how to transfer a song from iTunes so that it appears on Virtual DJ without closing VDJ.

Well worth it IMO.

Only word of advice is to avoid using play.com. I have downloaded 'on the fly' only to find the download is not ready for hours later.

ITunes - I thought swearing was not allowed on the forum :D :D :D :D

A bit off topic - but have you noticed the price of downloads creeping up. It is very rare I download an album as the cd is normally around the same price, or cheaper, and a year ago I was only paying around 69p a download.

Not used itunes to do it BUT if you have a tack on your lappy etc etc and want it to appear in VDJ go to the left hand side were the music list is and if the track isnt there the either close the folder down and re-open it OR right click and press recurse.

Neither did I till about 4 months ago, now I seem to be waiting a lot. It is still my preffered site as I find it the easiest to us.

It defies belief and logic that any digital DJ would turn up at a gig without trying to have the capability to download on the fly. Shaun, well done. You know it makes sense.

Try CopyTrans for an alternative to transfering stuff. Not iTunes but good enough ! You can't buy stuff with it though so still have to go through the iTunes store.

I'm getting an ipad next month for exactly this purpose plus the added bonus of an extra backup.

I got a request the other day that I couldn't fulfill and actually I could get hotel wifi on my playout laptop, but I think that route is a bit risky with a full dancefloor (even though I have done this at home successfully)

Apple's announcement yesterday (re iTunes in the Cloud) looked cool...Will be handy for you guys who have iTunes on a laptop but use another device (iPhone / iPad) to purchase music on, as everything is automatically synchronised immediately across all your iDevices (for $25 per year, I think...) :)
