View Full Version : Do you personally have a problem?

Corabar Entertainment

It often comes up on here about Gary Glitter tracks being persona non grata at discos because of the offence it may cause.

Personally, I can separate the music from the artist, so I wouldn't have a problem if someone played it somewhere when I was out, so I was just wondering how many of you would take offence if it were played somewhere that you were (ie I'm not talking about YOU playing it at one of your events, but the track being played somewhere where you were a punter / guest)

Thing is this topic has been done a few times and the general consensus is that some will play it, others won't. Same as some will use minimal set up and others put the whole nightclub in !

I don't have a problem with playing his stuff, but don't usually play a specific song, one is on a mix I use and most people don't even notice !

Actually, I don't think this has been done at all. Yes, we've discussed who will / won't play, but as I said in the OP, this thread has NOTHING to do with that.

I'm asking you all as people not DJs.

funkymook

I'm a 'not sure'.

I think my reaction would be a quick intake of breathe and a look around to see if there were any reactions from the audience, more in a 'are you going to get away with this?' manner than a 'how dare you play this'.

No problem here as far as I am concerned asI have played his tracks since he first released them.

I do ask clients before playing any tracks if requested by a guest though, as I do not wish to annoy my customers.

I used to play rock and roll pt 1 & 2 when i do the butlins 70's weekends but everytime atleast 1 person would complain to me so i stopped. Ive worked with the Glitterband a few times and they do 3 or 4 gary glitter tunes and they are very well received. It appears people will accept the glitter band performing the songs but not gary glitter doing them.

Personally i dont have a problem with hearing his songs, i actually quite like a few of them.

Right, well this is easy, isn't it? If someone else is playing it, no problem. If the gig ain't got my name on it, as long as they're not playing tracks with obscene language, I couldn't care less. If that sounds awfully like washing my hands of it, well so be it.

I'd wonder why they were playing his music tbh, there's plenty of music out there to be playing, without that being the music of a man who pleaded guilty to having 4000 hardcore images of young boys & girls. The images were described as "filthy and revolting" and of the "worst possible type" by the judge in court.

Just to shine some light on the seriousness of this -

"very young children, some appeared as young as two, in the main ranging from three, four, five and six up to possibly about nine or 10".

An initial examination of the computer revealed that it stored "the most appalling images" of very young children engaged in most humiliating sexual acts, said the QC.

No, not you Mark.... just amazed at the number of posters going on about what they'd play, as opposed to whether or not they would be offended if someone else played it - which is what was asked.

TBH, it's not just this thread. It seems it's becoming a rarity for people to actually bother to read what others are posting / asking these days, and it gets very frustrating some times.

I wouldnt have a problem with it, but i would think why is this idiot playing glitterAbsolutely.

I personally would not be offended, but I have to admit it would instantly lower my opinion of the DJ. OK, you could argue that it might have been a request, but even then, it is the DJ's decision to play it, and the DJ's responsibility if there is a negative reaction. And when I say negative reaction, it has the small potential to cause a real scene if people object vocally, or even physically.

I mentioned this the last time we discussed GG, but I will repeat it anyway - how many of his tunes were really that good anyway? If he hadn't have did what he did, how many would you play anyway? I'd say one or two, but I don't think any would be must-play songs at a mobile disco.

Oooh Angela, that's the tricky bit. I've read back on some of the related threads on this topic, and by jove but the water's muddy.

You and Steve both seem to have a knack/policy of separating the music from the person. I'd guess that most of the general public don't, which then leads me on to my next point.

In another thread, I ventured the opinion that whether or not I would play a song would depend mainly on how much media coverage and publicity the person concerned had received. If it's front page news, the public would tend to shun it. If only I know, then only I am affected.

It maybe a poor method of applying morals and censorship, but it's the best one I've got.

It's a classic question - can art (in it's broadest sense here) and the artist be separated? One that has been debated by many intellectuals over many centuries.

Does art's meaning exist only in the beholder and is therefore independent of it's creator or is it inextricably linked to the artist and his experiences and life?

Does your knowledge of the artist change your perception of their works?

Is it valid to project your own experiences onto the artwork or should you be neutral?

Does bringing your own feelings into the equation create a conflict between your interpretation and the artists meaning?

You have 3 hours to complete your essay starting......... now!

Yay! No more "Return of the Mac"

Bugger! No Skynyrd from "Nuthin' fancy" to "1991" inclusive. (Not that most of you would ever play anything later than a certain track off "Second helping" anyway)

It is fully possible to separate art & artist, although it seems difficult for those who have what could be described as the football hooligan mentality. (Generally speaking that is & definitely not pointing the finger at, or making accusations of anyone who has posted on this thread)

Anyway, as somebody once said

Can you listen to music without picturing the artist performing the song in your head? If it transpired that the artist was committing the crimes (for which they were later convicted) around the same time they were recording the music - would that affect your enjoyment?

On a similar subject (if this is off topic please delete or split to a new thread) - what does everyone make of Chris Brown? He gave Rihanna a quite severe beating only three years ago, yet now seems to be forgiven by the general public and is a superstar again? How can young girls idolise him and sing along to his music - does that not imply that they don't think it was a serious crime committed by him?

A customer decided he wanted to do a bit of Gary, and no amount of persuading could convince him otherwise...so on comes Im The Leader Of The Gang and the guy is prancing around on the stage...coupled with plenty of boo's and funny looks from the audience...at that point a hefty bloke jumps on stage, lamps the guy who hits the deck...complete with the TV.... and his beer on top...and he's lying there with 240v running through him because the trips on the fuse board had been "replaced"

So theres plenty of people out there who dont want to hear it IMO...

If you bothered to read what I put in bold you would see that I wasn't bashing anyone's opinion.

The term I used was the best way I could sum up the mentality of the majority of people who don't seem to be able to separate art & artist. What I didn't do was state that anyone on here had that mentality, or criticise anyone else's view on the subject in hand.

I guess I mean the kind of person who targets a hate campaign a pediatrician.

Just to reiterate the point, the key bit was "definitely not pointing the finger at, or making accusations of anyone who has posted on this thread"

If you still choose to take that as a dig at your or anyone else's opinion then that's your prerogative.

One other thing, regardless of what your or anyone's opinion is I will defend 100% your / their right to have & express it. Just as I have & defend my right to have & express mine.

Have to say i agree with corabar on this.

Also When i hear the opening beats on rock and roll part 1 and 2 i have to turn it up, its an awesome track!! Just out of interest, if the instrumentals were played (no gary glitter vocals) could people still complain? Because the instrumentals would be the glitter band, who are a chart topping band in their own right.

Also as corabar steve says, no more mark morrison and artimus pyle. As stated earlier chris brown too for what he did. People who wont play gary glitter, would you play chris brown? If so please answer why?

I know a bloke who was anti gary glitter and michael jackson etc, he used to go drinking on weekends, come home and beat his wife. I think that maybe the 'football hooligan' mentality corbar steve is talking about.

I reckon you've missed the point here, my highly charged young friend. IUt wouldn't bother me PERSONALLY because it wasn't my finger pressing play.

Do I condone the playing of it? No.
Would I try to prevent the playing of it? Again, no. Not my gig, not my job.

The problem favced, if we go too far down this road is that we could remove The Beatles from the playlist for advocating drug use, The Doors, Pink Floyd and countless others which haven't leapt into my mind so quickly.

Sexual lawbreakers, well Jerry Lee Lewis has gone, I think Chuck Berry has a strike against him somewhere, and again there are many others.

Considering the allegations surrounding Michael Jackson ( although of course GG got convicted) I cant see its a problem.

Does anyone have a problem with playing Jacko --probably not;)

He just had a very expensive team of Lawyers fighting his case---as well as the odd bit of buying off the parents ( allegedly) money talks eh?

Im not knocking Jacko just stating facts here if we are talking about undesirable features of an artist or Band.

As a musical artist ( not a person/ individual ) GG was top of the pile in the early 70s and those of us in the Mobile DJ market were very grateful for a lot of his music which dragged us out of the 60s into the Glam Rock area and of course brilliant Disco style music for Weddings and Parties at the time.

Playing Slade, GG, Sweet, T Rex, Bowie etc all on the same night is a happy memory. :beer1: :beer1: :beer1:

Do you still play INXS music--the main man topped himself remember:(
What's that got to do with this thread even if he did?

The Question asked was would you be offended if you were out & the DJ played Gary Glitter, which I assume you answered in your first sentence.

I think it would be dependant on the location and the type of function i was at.
If i was out with a load of friends at a pub or something and a glitter song was played i'm sure i would probably wonder why i'm hearing it but not really be overly offended.

BUT

If i was a a Scouting function for example and i heard it then i would be livid and step in.

I think its a time and place thing.

None at all.

Rather than hiding behind a wink, why don't you elaborate on you point about Michael Jackson? Do you know about something he did, that the judges and juries didn't know?

Let's stick to facts here - the accusations against Michael Jackson were proven to be unfounded, and therefore dismissed.

Gary Glitter is a convicted paedophile who abused helpless young children. The question of this thread is: would you be offended in any way if his music was played to you? After reading more about what he did (I never did before because I hate reading about extreme cruelty), I find it hard to understand how anyone could take any enjoyment from his music without thinking about that.

Did you notice the scoring on the poll?

I simply answered the question and stated what I consider some relevant facts in connection with the subject of Pop Stars and their flawed characters, in other words GG is not the only one--as we all know and added my personal take on it.

If my post is considered to be non PC it will be removed by the mods.

Did you notice the scoring on the poll?I myself voted no, but would change it to yes now, on the basis of what I said in my last post.

In any case, the last paragraph of my post wasn't aimed at you, I should have made that clearer, sorry.

I simply answered the question and stated what I consider some relevant facts in connection with the subject of Pop Stars and their flawed characters, in other words GG is not the only one--as we all know and added my personal take on it.You're saying GG merely has a flawed character? No, you can't make a direct comparison between what he did and someone taking their own life. I shouldn't really have to point that out.

As for facts, again, Michael Jackson was proven to be innocent in every case. Those are your facts.

If my post is considered to be non PC it will be removed by the mods. That's not really the issue - as I said, you are entitled to your opinion.

Who cares, he's dead now. It's not as if he's going to be doing anything in the forseeable....

I probably wouldn't take offence at anyone playing any song (with, perhaps, the exception of the Birdy Song  ) but I can't remember the last time I saw a DJ working who wasn't me so the scenario hasn't really come up.

I have been on a dance floor and a mix has been going o,be it a 70s mix or a glam rock mix and the crown and myself included have merrily been singing the lyrics and dancing. His music didnt hurt people,He did.

I agree. A song isn't dangerous and can't hurt people. Music and person are two separate entities as far as I'm concerned.

Who cares, he's dead now. It's not as if he's going to be doing anything in the forseeable....

Correct. And dead people can't sue! Now where do we start with this one?? :D

Playing or listening to gg will not make you a peado or mean you support em any more than listening to whinehouse will make you a dope head.
