When a wedding over runs and you're there early?

I especially hate it when people keep asking me how long I'm going to be setting up.

It makes it even worse when you get several people at different times coming up, when you're rushing about trying to get set up. :mad:

Had a guy last night, who was showing me jokes and videos on his mobile when I was setting up, yer and I really got time for that, hanging from the goal post "ere have a look at this one mate".

I had the total opposite last night! AA roadsearch which seems to work on the basis that everyone drives a Morris Minor Traveller, estimated my journey into the depths of Mid-Wales at 1hr 44, so I set off at four o'clock, to arrive at 600pm for a 7.30 start(background music) at 6.30pm I was still driving around the wilds of Wales, and no sign of the venue. Eventually found a local wandering around who sent me off into a maze of lanes, and as you can imagine I was ****ting myself. Finally arrived at 6.40pm, to be greeted at the door by one of the catering staff saying, "You've got ages yet, they've only just started the speeches!" So I'd got myself in a sweat for nowt, and had to sit around for half an hour waiting to get into the room.Still, cracking night, just before twelve the BG came and chucked me a ton for an extra hour-Lubblyjubbly!!!and got an ovation at the end!!! :teeth:

Yeah i had a wedding over run last night was due to set up at 6:30 for 7:30 i arrived a 6:00 to be told they hadnt started food yet. At 7:30 they let me in the room and then for the next half an hour while i ran around gettin gear in and up they came up to me every other minute asking is it ready yet, wheres the music.
You get the idea lol.

The trouble is, is as polite as people are, it starts to annnoy me and I start feeling pressured to set up quicker.

18th birthday party last night, the girl said to us "You should be ready by now!" (This was about 7.32, and we were due to start at 7.30).

We replied "We are...can't you hear the music?" :teeth:

i had a wedding last month where they didnt finish speeches etc until 8.30, then the hotel spent 20 mins moving tables then another half hour laying the dancefloor before even letting myself or the band into the room, ended up tossing a coin with the band to see who went first. the band ended up going first so i sat outside eating bbq for an hour or so while they played a set. did the first dance, they decided to do presentations then the band went on again. i ended up only doing about 50mins work all night !

well last night, for a change the host looked after me all night, brought me food, drink, and kept checking i was ok . what a nice change from being totally ignored.

I managed a 9:30 start on Friday, I was on site from 6:05 & due to start at 7:30

Moved gear into main hall as advised by groom night before.

Bride came over just as we moved in the last bit to tell us she'd changed her mind and could we go in the room next door - down a flight of stairs and right at the end of the room.

Bridesmades constantly "how long?"

First dance 9.55pm

Last dance 11.25pm

Only played songs on client playlist all night, but two comments from "friends of the bride" that the bride was unhappy because she didin't like the music.

After 40 years I now expect that all weddings will over run and its a surprise when they are on time. I expect to have to wait; so its no surprise. Tht thing that annoys me is kids coming and making requests whilst we are setting up. In particular I just love "What records have you got mate? Anything good?" I generally reply that I have got Des O'Connor's latest CD and that generally shuts them up and they go away convinced I am crap or realise that I have a wicked sense of humour.

Agree with all the comments, absolutely hate it when you arrive early already to set up and you can't even get in the function room as it is the same one for the evening reception.
As Theo said, most weddings I've been to run over, if you've set up earlier in the day establish who your contact at the venue is. I usually ring them up to find out what stage the 'wedding breakfast' is at, then I can leave home in ample time.

A tip , When you finally get to the stage to set-up and it is running over, if the wedding has a toastmaster, tell him what your plans are for setting up and how long you are going to be. Ask him if he'll tell the wedding party/hotel staff, the've ususally listened to everything he's said as gospel all afternoon and he/the hotel may shift them all off to another bar for 20 minutes to give you some peace and quiet.

had a fun wedding last weekend....was about 1hour 15 from my house to get to the venue and was in a marquee - bride and groom wanted everything set up by 4pm for when the guests arrived so i did....

Didn't start playing background "meal music till 7.30pm and by the time they had done speaches and presentations for me to start the first dance it was 11.30pm!!! First coach was due to pick people up at midnight... By the time i had done the first dances it was 11.45pm - i played for 15 minutes before having to announce that the first coach had arrived for guests.... Was quite funny too as 90% of the guests were french and over for the weekend for the wedding (as bride was from france origionally) and no one had mentioned it too me... didnt mater as most spoke broken english but was a bit of a shock to walk in and here nothing but french being spoken (including all the speaches...

Still ended up playing till 2.30am but to only half the amount of people there was the rest of the night - but they were all on the dancefloor bar 2 old people that couldnt fit on the first coach. The contract was till 2am but they were having fun and i was having fun and the venue the marquee was at didnt mind so i played the extra 30minutes..... So by the time i'd packed everything away spoke to the remaining guests and bride and groom etc... i didn't get home till around 5am...

Long day but enjoyable day.

Had an all-day wedding booking for me yesterday - setup just after lunch, client arrive at around 3pm ahead of schedule (while I was getting changed!) as their wedding went in early at the registry office.

Had left 'eating music' on from 2.30pm to around 5.30pm as thats all they wanted - smooth classics, unwind cd, classical chillout etc - all requested by the client - then I did about 1 hour of music for the kids who were still there while some left to change for the evening.

Then some of the women asked for some 80s just after 6pm - and they danced right upto 8.30 non-stop, letting their hair down after the afternoons formalities.

So - after a few hours of nothing, just sitting around on site and being fed by the caterers (bonus!), I did 2 hours, then 3/4 hour for buffet for evening reception followed by music and a packed dancefloor upto 11.30pm.

Only request of 'not-to-play' was Motown (or similar), Rap and Rock and Roll unless the brides dad asked for it. Just kept a good mix of 70s dancey/disco and 80s upto present day with some instant requests thrown in here and there - and all very appreciated.

Bride and Groom left just after lights-on and she rang this morning thanking me for the evening and said they had a whip-round for me which was in the grooms pocket - despite paying me earlier in the day which they dropped off in person at lunchtime.

I bet next weekends wedding will be totally different.
