Last friday i put in a cheque in my bank a clients a Non-Refundable booking fee.
On tuesday i logged onto my online business banking account and it shows that there is two transactions of the NRBF when only put the one cheque in.
So i contacted my bank on tuesday to tell them that they have taken it out twice so they said they will call me back once they have investigated it. I get a call back yesterday from the business manager of my bank saying they had taken the money from my account that shouldnt be in there.
Today i recieve the clients cheque back in an envelope stamp marked on it unpaid refer to drawer. So i contact the bank again to clear it up with them.
This evening i had a call from the client who said that they have been charged by their bank because of a bounced cheque and they have gone overdrawn they wasn't rude about it and i said to them im going to speak to my bank and see if i can get them to refund you the charges because their bank will not waive the charges.
anyways. My bank are going to call me before 12 tommorow and hopefully they will be refunded the charges. question is this has never happened to me before. If my bank refuse to reimburse them, Should i do it myself as a gesture of goodwill to my client.
For the record the clients cheque has not bounced its cleared in my account.

they were charged £8.00 by their bank Barclays. The thing is there is no bounced cheque. My bank made the error of putting the cheque in twice.

If it was me, i'd refund the customer to save them any hastle, then chase it up with the bank yourself, but charge the bank for your time
I hate banks with a passion, they're the biggest thieves out there, so i'm on your side

Sometimes people get themselves in a sticky financial situation and in my experience the banks only make things worse.

Still no further on with my bank. Ive contacted them again today they have said that someones going to call me back.
Im going to refund the client myself via my online banking so they can see for themselves in evidence. Then the bank can refund me.
Im losing patience with my bank now the service is getting beyond a joke.

Sorry this makes no sense. Yes the bank have correctly removed the second deposit from your account, as this was an error. But if you have received the cheque back marked RD then that has been returned to them by Barclays (drawers bank) due to lack of funds, and thus would again be deducted from your account. The Drawer therefore now owes you the NRBF again! Don't refund them anything, they owe you!

What? How do they owe John? The money has cleared in the account. The client was charged twice so the bank took the second transaction back from John.
Because the transaction went through twice this made the client go overdrawn and therefore the bank charged them for that.

Ive looked at my internet banking again Peter and the bank have took a further amount of my bank. So its not the Banks fault after all.
You were right.
I thought the cheque had cleared it showed in the account that it had but now the further amount has been taken out this afternooon the cheque has bounced the bank had made corrections.
I havent issued the client a confirmation letter in the post yet. Their cheque has indeed bounced. So as a rule i will not accept any further cheques from them. It must now be sent by Bacs. If not the booking will be cancelled.

I have contacted the client and they are now aware that the cheque has bounced and that i need a NRBF from them asap.
The groom has told me that he will do a bacs payment within the next 30 minutes. So we will see what happens there.
