I had a Race Night with disco on Wednesday for a charity fundraiser. This one I found particularly hard as it was to raise funds to provide a 2 year old girl with lifesaving treatment.
I am not sure exactly what treatment is needed but was aware that the family needed to raise an additional £5000, not just from the one night, they have other events organised.
As soon as they booked I realised how serious the whole family were taking things - if I made a suggestion they followed through and done what was needed.
Conclusion was, they were hoping to get their first £1000 from the night which was held on the girls 2nd birthday (hence a Wednesday night). The turnout was tremendous (over 200 people at a guess) and everyone joined in and really did take part in all that was on offer.
At the end of the night, all the money taken is was counted and amazingly £4370 was raised, the £1000 target was surpassed before the night even begun. The whole family just burst into tears and could not believe the amount had been raised in one night. The uncle had won the auction race and gave me his prize (a red letter Ferrari day). I obviously turned it down but he was very insistant to the point he was starting to become a bit offended I would not accept the gesture, so a great day out to look forward to. The parents of the girl came to thank me and could hardly talk through the tears of joy. The father said 'you have helped enormously to save our daughters life'.
I do many fundraisers but never done one where I felt so proud and 'involved' in the night. Was an excellent night and the family have said they will keep me informed about progress made - one auntie even said she would make up the rest of the money if needed. Made me feel great to think 'I made a difference'.
