View Full Version : Led or Halogen?? What's your prefered choice?

Appologies if this has been done before, but what are the pros and cons of both? Apart from the brightness that halogens give off. I can't see any other advantage over led.
My NJD datamoons and scanners weigh a :Censored: ton. Forever changing lamps and lampholders in them. Take ages to warm up and lifetime to cool down. Will there ever be a Martin wizard led? Waiting for some smart :Censored: to tell me there is lol:D :D
So over to you, good people.

The led stuff is getting better there are 100w led moving moving heads now .
I have been looking at some 50w led scanners from thomann they look good.
An led wizard would be great but it would have to be 100w+ .
Pitty someone couldn't modify the wizard to take an led.

Neither, until LEDs catch up with the output of a discharge lamp at a sensible price.
I'd sooner have a pair of datamoons with gobos than the dot based LED-stuff that's around.
And I'd hardly call a <10Kg light heavy!

I would have a good look at your datamoons. Touch wood, I have used mine for 2 years now, never changed a bulb or holder. At the end of the night I unplug everything except the datamoons and by the time I come to unplug them they are cool.
To answer the op I like the idea of LED but have still to find anything that impresses. The weight advantage is strongly in favour of the LED effects but on the minus side normally they are huge (not all but most seem to be big).

Datamoons love Philips Broadway lamps. Pricey, but they last forever :)

as i have explained to steve, datamoons are not designed to run for 4+ hours continuously.
some of the led stuff with gobos are ok,not as sharp as a halogen or discharge effect, but functional and have no duty cycle.

Until they have improved the led effects to the standard of halogen/discharge at a reasonable cost then I am keeping my 250msd m/heads, 250msd Warlocks and Acrobats. I cannot stand dots flying around and I like to have speed control with my dmx controllers. Maybe the leds can be dmx'x but I don't like the dots and the ones with gobos are too expensive.

Output and gobos are pretty much the only important thing to me in a lighting effect and in both terms LED are still not up to the standard of 250watt/discharge effects. Loving the EFX 600's I'm currently using and can't see me using LED again for a long time (apart from wash effects of course).
This is why Plasa is a good show as its showing products that won't be on/affordable to our industry for a good few years.

Nice to see them Flatliners but the Stairville CS X50 led scanner is £325 and I expect the 100w led moving head will be around £500+.
I am happy with my 250msd m/heads that cost me £250 each new YES NEW but the store had no more as they had bought them from China to try them out and only used one as the second was in original packing.
By the time led lights get to the standard of the halogen/msd I will have retired. I'm 60 now.

LED. purely as everything is pre tbared and needs too be transported and lifted at once. So mainly a weight and compact design thing (no mirrors or moving parts).
I am not too bothered about the lack of variation and light output as the lights look good with lasers and washes. I have thought about a wizard type effect.

Our whole rig is LED, MarveLED, Dynarocks and Colourbursts for most gigs.
Plenty of light and we DMX them to have pre set movements for slow dances and strobing etc. Very happy with them.
Looking at those videos of the led scanners I would also be happy to have those as it's not like we're going to play Glastonbury so as long as the LED's can send a gobo to the back of a large hall I would be satisfied.
However the cost of the more powerful LED scanners and moving heads at the moment is too high.
Age old argument... do the guest actually notice if its all dots or not?

Whilst having a little look at videos of different types of lights with a client who had a definite idea of what they wanted, I got a "Ooooh - that's nice" for an LED dot light... "Refreshingly simple instead of all those big ugly patterns you usually get."
Make of that what you will!

Which unit was that Angela?
I've kept my led units and plan to use them for dry hire.
I remember Ian Forrest had a client who wanted an led effect over the normal wizards that he used too so your client isn't the only one.

Ummmm.... now you're asking. Could have been either Chauvet Elan, or Miracled.

I send two MiracLEDs out on dry hire and no one hs ever came back and said they were crap.....
Personally, for me Dots are ok as long as you have gobos and colourwashes to compliment it.

While setting up, I've often had event organisers/venue staff watching, and I've the "Ooooooooooooh" as I test the lights. Kam panels and Revo Rolls. Now, with the Powerbar, it's " Blimey, I've gone blind!!!!! "
To answer the question, now that the first fixture into the van for every single gig is the Ugly Cut Price Teutonic Powerbar ( :ner: Shaun, I like mine, so there. ), the LED revos weren't an option, since the light output wasn't overpowering to start with, so I've reverted to the 250w Spin 3's, and I'm absolutely loving the combination. Add a couple of cheap lasers, and I can coipe with any venue ( The Lasers work particularly well in marquees. )

Here was my set up a couple of years ago. With smoke and from the clients POV it looks good. I think we tend to think the client sees what we see from our booths which is the beams hitting the floor/wall and all those "ugly dots".

I use a mix of LED and Halogen. I like some of the LED effects personally.
The Mystic LED's have patterns and rotation etc and look great with haze or smoke and can also fill a room with colour and movement. I have started using them for hire jobs now and the feedback that I got from saturdays hire was that they were great.

How do the 60w + LED lights compare to halogen? Does anyone know?

Dot's or gobo's, most people at disco's are not really bothered as long as the dance floor is iluminated with colour.

Indeed it isn't. The salient question is:
Appologies if this has been done before, but what are the pros and cons of both? So over to you, good people.
Pros for Halogen and similar: Bright, have gobos, often changeable.
Cons: Heavy, can suffer from lamp and holder failure.
Two important points, buy a load of lampholders, and change them often. Don't let them deteriorate too much, cos a worn holder can take a lamp out in an hour. Lamps, try to switch them off ten minutes early, let 'em cool as much as you can,and leave 'em in place s long as you can before touching them.
Pros for LED: Not heavy at all, low low running costs.
Cons: Dots only ,and not as bright either unless you get the single white LED units, when gobos can be used. If the multiple LED units lose some LEDS, they aren't as easy to replace.

The Led pars are beyond reproach IMO. I don't have the powerbar, but I do have it's little brother the Kambar and I think it's excellent in terms of brightness. So no complaints there.
It's just the weight issue of the datamoons and scanners, and the hassle of changing lampholders and lamps ( Very difficult to change if one pops on you during mid gig)
The scanners Shaun posted the youtube vids to look excellent on that rig. I haven't checked out the price, but the general consensus seems to be far too expensive, but if you're not changing lamps and lampholders regularly. The costs might even themselves out over time:daft: :daft:

I think the 60 watt is better than a 250 halogen or up there with a 150 discharge
Saw the 60w chauvet q 260 moving head at the first nedj northeast branch and was impressed but not with the price

I'm certainly tempted by a couple of the Stairville MH-X50+ :)

Plus for reliability wise it's got to led all the way for me, plus when you switch them on the light is instantaneous. I also think they respond better to S2L when playing at lower volumes. The downside is they keep moving whilst no music is being played. Just to the sound on chatter in the room

It depends what you are using really.
