A strange tale of Internet providers

You will struggle to believe this--but it just happened.

We have two phone lines with talk talk.( TT)

Never had an issue with them until now:eek:

First line is mine and I have been paying £15 per month EXTRA for Broadband because we live in the sticks ( allegedly)

Second line is my wifes--no Broadband.

So we get a calll on my wifes line from TT--how would you like FREE BROADBAND.

Ok why not its a back up and costs nothing.;)

Then I phone TT and say--I want free broadband on MY LINE.

Both in the same house on the same exchange 10 feet apart.

Ahh no you cant have that despite being a loyal customer for 5 years BECAUSE
TT have used up their free allocation in the BT exchange.

I will be ringing BT in the morning to see if I can get FREE BROADBAND with them.

They wonder why customers have no Loyalty.

For one, it wouldn't be any good as a backup because at some point very close to your property (if not within) the two lines will end up on the same copper albeit on separate pairs.

If they're not multiplexed in any way prior to the exchange (the norm with older / in-the-sticks connection) then when the bundle containing your two pairs enters the exchange, the pairs will in all likelihood end up connected to the same TT router.

If they don't, they'll still be multiplexed down the same TT fibre backbone.

So, not really a backup :)


Therefore, why not accept the free BB on the wife's line, cancel your £15 BB and move your network onto hers?

Voila! Free TT BB! :p

Well its possible Martin that whilst I agree with 99 per cent of what you say there is a slight chance the phone line can fail between the point of installation ie. plug on wall and where it connects to the main wire via inaccessible plaster concrete etc and as you rightly say connects with the second line.

Im inclined to go on your suggestion although the only fly in the proverbial ointment is that the wifes phone line point is in fact housed in a fitted kitchen cupboard to be tidy. The Router would have to operate from inside a kitchen cupboard which for Wireless Laptops might not give the best reception--unless we are all in the kitchen rather than 40 feet away.

Did I mention my wife is trying to get my son and I out of the kitchen with laptops---something to do with cooking food I believe ??
