Even a trade account with maplin would probably still be more expensive than CPC!

I first dealt with Maplin in 1978 and my first set of disco gear was built by buying 95% of the components from them. At the time they were the best electronics retailer in the country. When the new catalogue came out it would be thicker than the previous year and I would spend several lunch hours at work browsing through it.
When they first introduced "Customer Numbers" mine was less than 12000 and a few years later when they also had MPS (Maplin Professional Supplies) my customer number for that account was over 3 million.
I designed my KAT5 TV system http://www.kat5.tv sourcing the components from them......
..... then they changed :(
They turned into a toy shop and followed the style set by Tandy. I still used to recieve the catalogue but was buying less and less from them.
One afternoon I had an emergency installation job to do for a venue on the seafront and had run out of mono jack plugs, leapt into the car and made a dash to the Maplin store in Norwich to buy 4 Mono Jack Plugs - hardly an unusual item and not exactly a massive order. I came away with 2 Stereo Jacks and two right angle stereo jacks which I had to wire as mono becuase that was all they had in stock :(
The following year, my free catalogue didnt arrive so I rang up to ask where it was and I was told that I wasnt entitled to one as I didnt spend enough the previous year. I pointed out to the woman on the phone that I used to spend over a thousand pounds with Maplin every year for several years but that the reason I no longer did was because they stopped selling all the things I was buying :(
My preferred suppliers now are Rapid, CPC and Farnell.
