Have had a frantic phone call from a friend of the missus who's 40th Birthday party we are attending tomorrow evening, apparently the dj is really good but doesn't have any lights. ( ) can i take mine and set them up.
So basically i'm taking everything bar speakers and mixer

Didn't they ask him about lights when they booked him?
Would I help out? If they were absolutely desperate - Yes. I would just say to the mate to get me a few beers.
At the end of the day, if I was invited (like you are), the gear wouldn't be used and just be sitting there and if it helps out, no problem.

I do find it hard to see how someone can work up the experience and knowledge to be a "good dj" but not have any lights?
Needless to say I would do like Gary says for a few beers.

I would - but it would be basic and i'd expect said 'friend' to transport them to and from the venue so I could still have a few drinks and not have to take the car.
Agree with above though - even if they were a club jock, surely they didnt just presume the venue would have lights?

OMG - thats rubbish...
I never had any lights for 10 years.
Like myself for those 10 years, he's probably a bar/club jock and hasn't crossed over to the darkside.
Replying to the OP - Definitely - I always do this type of thing for FREE!

Hmm, yes, probably - because the only other alternative really would have been to not go (or to go and sit in a dark room for an evening feeling the weight of peoples stares...)
I'd probably take my decks as well, just in case his DJ'ing skills are as good as his 'lights' :D

I very much doubt I'd do it (it really all depends how close a friend it is). If I've got a rare night off and I'm attending a party, the last thing I want to do is spend time setting up lighting, then either dismantling it all at the end of the night or the next day.

I see where you are coming from Shaun and I agree on the points raised but..... if it would benefit a friend which clearly it would?
I guess the other choice is to charge the DJ for hiring some lights?

Like I said, it would depend how close the friend was. The OP states it's for a friend of his missus. There's some friends of my missus that I wouldn't lend a torch too, never mind expensive lighting. :d

I'm wondering why the DJ that was hired couldn't hire his own lights?
I'd be very reluctant to do it, because I wouldn't want to be dismantling / packing away lights & stands whilst inebriated. Can't see many taxis letting you take trussing or an ultimax stand as luggage either.
What if the DJ really isn't that good & you want to leave early or for some other reason you want / need to leave before the end for that matter?

Whatever next? Turning up at a venue & asking if you can use a table????

The more I think about this I know I definitely wouldn't do it. There's no way I want to be messing around breaking down a light-show after being drinking all night.
I would however do everything I could do to help them source some lighting hire.

Because if you take the job you sort the gear, not rely on them sorting something else out. If it had been booked for months then what would they have done without you.
I don't take my gear down after a few - that's when things get broken.

I loaned my day-job boss a basic lighting right (4 lights on a T-bar consisting of Impossibled, Acme barrel effect light and two mini-moonflowers) for his 40th. He'd hired a restaurant and was playing music through their sound system but the venue had no lighting. It was a ten minute set up job in the corner of the room and collect the next day.
Saved me having to buy him a birthday drink, anyway!! ;)

Well fair play to you Martin but as a favour I wouldn't take so much kit. T bar, couple of led effects or even par cans, done!

I'd help the guy out with either a t bar with 2 X datamoons, 2 pars for behind and maybe a starcluster for roomfill. Think of it this way people, everyone who sees you and/or your gear (lights or other kit) are potential customers.
As the OP said he is doing the wedding for one of the guests so nothing wrong with a bit of self-promotion. Put on a good show and people will ask who provided the lights ? (or drop discrete hints you provided them !)

If i knew the Dj then proberley yeah
If i didn't and who ever it was who booked him asked me if i coul help i'd be inclined to say no BUT as mentioned it could work out well for you OR it could turn out with people wanting everything for nothing lol
Luckily i have a some small led lights (LittLeds) which are so lightweight BUT produce floorfilling dots lol so are easy to trasport and easy to fit etc etc so even if you were the worse for wear its not anything heavy to take down and pop in a taxi/transport home etc
I shall be using my LittLeds on a 50th Bday this sunday as they have asked for lighting but nothing to bright or strobey (there words not mine) plus ive not used them for about a year lol

Easy, Lightweight and simple floorfiller's :) they are dots BUT like i say floorfillers and i don't use them much so options like this were a quick help is needed simple lights like the LittLeds are a quick and easy solution :)

Just to close this thread off have had a text from the birthday girl to advise that the entertainer has sourced some lights so now doesn't need mine.
so I guess I can spend the night moaning after all.

Some of these posts are unbelievable.
I can't believe how miserable, grumpy, awkward a few people are being. Taking a couple of flashing lights to a party really isn't the end of the world.
I'd be ashamed to attend the party having said 'no'.
Maybe I'm too flexible but sometimes you gotta help others...

Miserable, awkward and grumpy? the crux of the issue for me is handling and shifting lighting whilst drunk. It's plain common sense in protecting my investment. Does that make me miserable, awkward and grumpy? If you want to take risks with parts of your livelihood that's all fine and well, but to label others in such negative terms is quite frankly a little misguided IMO.

But it's not just the lights is it. Where would they go? You need something to hang them off at least, & then there's the leads etc...

So what would you do, if you went to the party with your lights and after a couple of hours you wanted/needed to leave, boredom, feeling unwell etc.
What would you do with them, take them down half way through or entrust your equipment with somebody else, who could be the type of gets trollied whilst working? I'm keen to know!

In this case, the OP said he was staying overnight at the venue, so no action necessary till morning.
And to the folk who quite rightly advise against dealing with expensive, complicated, and potentially dangerous equipment while impaired through alcohol, would it not be possible to merely supervise the DJ who had not touched a drop of alcohol all night, while he carefully disassembles them?

To me irrelevant, he might feel ill, need to go to his room, will he leave his better half downstairs in charge of them?
I would guess a lot would depend on how much you value the lights.

Regardless of what I drink - I don't really get 'drunk' (rolling around, being loud, not being able to hold things etc).
I wouldn't leave. I'd just see it through...it's only a couple of hours of my life and it's helped somebody out.
What would you're excuse be? Sorry, I don't want to lend you any lights because I can't dismantle them whilst under the influence?
I'm not being rude or trying to wind people up - I'd honestly do what I could to help out, drink, have a good time, stay till the end and help take everything down.
I think a few people who say they wouldn't help would act differently when asked in person from someone they know.

It wouldn't be an "excuse". Just a statement of the facts. My equipment is my livelihood, I don't mess around with my livelihood whilst under the influence. I fail to see what's so hard to understand about that? Fair enough you may not be so guarded when it comes to such matters but to call others "miserable, grumpy, awkward" for operating differently to how you operate seems a bit excessive and OTT (IMO). Then you state you're not trying to wind people up or being rude by such comments. I found your comments to do just that!

Charlie, nobody has said it would be due to drinking alcohol to excess but you could be taken ill, stomach upset, who knows what and you may have to leave the party.
Then your kit would be left in the hands of a total stranger.
Okay, lets assume all went well and the dj was an upstanding chap who should be a member on here! He packs it down to be left in the function room overnight.
You go down the following morning and there is a something missing, who do you talk to, him, the hotel, who?

You also have to consider the PLI implications....
You are erecting your lights and are attending the party...and having a drink. Unless you have a dry hire agreement in place (and PLI to cover said agreement)...those lights are still your responsibility!

Fair enough, we obviously think differently.
You lot would have died last night...
Part of my getting the kids involved routine is letting them have a go at DJ'ing...pressing pause & play if they get out of a game like Musical Bumps.
I can't see any harm. What could happen to the lights if you were to lend them? What are the chances of anything going wrong?
Maybe if this was my livelihood and I had kids/mortgages it would be a different story - but I highly doubt it.
