Just for one night where there are decent restaurants and bars/clubs?

I'm a bit clueless TBF.

The train obviously arrives at St Pancras so anywhere nearish there that is 'good' :o

Names of places and areas are fine. I can find a hotel from that information.

TBH it's probably better, unless you stick in the West End. There is no real specific area for going out unlike (as we found at BPM) Birmingham, which does have a Bar / Club type area where everything seems to be.

Everything is a little more spread out in London, there is no real neighbourhood that everyone goes to to go out. There are more localised pockets.

There is pretty much something for everyone in Camden & it's very close to where you are arriving.

BTW, Camden is in the heart of London, it's only acouple of miles from the dead centre.

Plus you'll be a lot safer walking the streets in Camden than KX

I went for the day last year and we had a lovely reasonably priced Chinese in China Town. That seemed to be busy and vibrant.

31st July, which is a Sunday - overnight - day in London - come back Monday evening.

Camdon seems to have a lot of Holiday Inns etc. I don't want to pay Ritz prices but wouldn't mind paying an extra £20/30 for something a bit more special. I've already got the Travelodge to look forward to in October. ;)

It's a treat/surprise for my best mate at work who is leaving us to go travelling. We're like brother and sister and she's always wanted to visit London - so this seemed ideal. Cheap train down and then hopefully a bargain hotel - with a single bed of course. ;)

We ended up traipsing around a few bars through Soho, got some over-priced food and awful service from the waiters in Chinatown, then ended up in an Irish bar called O'Neills - jackpot! Stayed there for the rest of the night and had a blast.

Why in god's name were you staying in Croydon for a match at the Emirates?It was my mate's bright idea, his thinking was to book the cheapest hotel he could find, with the plan of getting the bus or train to the Emirates.

As it turned out, with all the time and expense of travelling around, we would've been as well to fork out that little bit extra for a hotel near the stadium.

They're all over the place down here & about as Irish as me (especially the ones in Central London)You're probably right, but I forgot to mention that the place was filled with other Scotland fans, so that's what made it. We even harassed the band into playing 500 Miles. It was terrible.

However london is a big old place so wherever you stay you will still need to travel around.
when you go out boozing try and avoid the tourist places and venture slightly off the beaten track. If you want a cool bar google purl in marylebone. Can also suggest a few other places if you give a little more of an idea what you want to do

Erm...I enjoy good food and living the life of Riley for 24hours before coming back to reality. TBF, I've enjoyed quite a few 'rougher' pubs in Nottingham over the past couple of weeks...cheesy DJ with karaoke, people being sick outside etc...you know the score. ;)

I'm open minded and will enjoy anywhere but seeing as though it's a one off and I don't visit London every weekend...I'll try and go to a few 'special places!'

Without information about what it is you're after, then all anyone can do is stab in the dark! eg: Not much point stating 'nice meal' if your idea of a nice meal is a carvery, whilst mine may be an intimate Italian Bistro, and Steve suggested Camden to you on the basis that you asked for somewhere lively close to Kings Cross/St Pancras, but if you're looking to go to a show, then it's not the right place at all.

Give us a few flipping clues mate, and we might be able to help!!!!

Sorry, you're right.

Here's my theory...

This is probably going to be the only time I'll go to London this year (not that I go every year) and it's a special occasion, I don't get school holidays any more and I'm working my socks off 9.00-6.00 five days a week and then giging at the weekends.

I'm terrible with money and spend way beyond my means but you only live once and I feel like I deserve it. Budget - I'd reluctantly pay £300 for The Savoy (and Savoy only) - I can't justify paying that kind money for a Hilton or 'chain' - if that makes sense? For a 'chain hotel' (Ramada and the likes) £230ish?

Preferably four star but three would be fine.

Another reason I'm having reservations about the savoy is because...will I appreciate it? We'll check in at 2.00pm have a fiddle with the TV and stash the molton brown soap in our suitcase ( :sj: ) and then leave to explore. We'll pop back at 6.00ish and appreciate the iPod dock whilst getting ready. I'd probably have one drink in the bar (probably wouldn't eat there. I don't like eating in the same place I'm staying - I'd rather explore) and then roll in at 4.00am. Wake up at 11.00ish, pack our bags and find somewhere for breakfast. At the end of the day, it's a base....just a nice one.

Saying that, I know I'd appreciate it and I'd be in my element. Nice atmosphere and (IMO) something to do before I die.

I like my food but Gemma is the opposite. She'd be happy with a donner kebab. She does like Chinese. Evening meal - no budget really. No more than a £100 tops.

Bars/clubs - do you have to pay to get in? I love having a good dance.

This probably sounds very extravagant and most will think I'm a spoilt kid but all the money is mine, which I've earnt and it's my chance to say goodbye to a close friend. My next trip will be to Skegvagus in November (when it's dead) to spend sometime with Grandad.

If you want to be within walking distance of Chinatown, Theatres, Covent Garden, SouthBank, Leicester Square etc. and generally be a tourist then it's ideal.

If you want to do anything else further afield then you have Charing Cross Station and Embankment Tube seconds away (so relatively easy to get to as well when you arrive).

For a day out in London I reckon it's as good as you're going to get - and for £75 each it's a pretty good deal.

The one thing I can say about the hotel on Leicester Sq that Steve mentioned, is that I have never been anywhere where the staff were nicer or more helpful. They were absolutely fantastic.

Leicester Square itself is obviously pretty lively, and you're just around the corner from China Town, Soho, theatreland, etc, etc.

If you're off travelling seeing the sites during the day, you'll probably be using the tube anyway.

The Strand (the other hotel you're looking at) is on the borders of the West End / City. The City is absolutely dead as a dodo at the weekend, so you're on the edge, so to speak.

It really depends if you want to be in the heart of it, or on the edge (but still close).

Whoever you got that from left out some information Rayners Lane is one of the destinations you could also get on a Piccadlly line with Heathrow as it's destination.

Actually any Southbound / Westbound (I forget which it's labled as at KX, but it will be one or the other, not North or East) Piccadilly Line will get you there

I always thought that was in WC1. I guess the WC postcode stops on the south side of Euston Rd.

Yeah, it takes a few mins to get downstairs onto the tube platforms & only takes a minute or so more to get to Leicester Sq & about the same to get back up to street level & around the corner to the hotel.

I phoned both hotels and they seemed pretty helpful. Both of them appear to be in good locations (obviously Steve's is a lot closer to the action.) His is also a 'posher' hotel than the Charing Cross.

I went for the Charing Cross in the end because after a bit of bartering - there Junior Suite http://www.guoman.com/en/hotels/united_kingdom/london/charing_cross/rooms_and_suites/junior_suite.html came cheaper than the other hotels standard twin room.

We'll walk around and explore - it's all part of the fun. Angela's home-made map seriously put things into perspective.

Steve, thanking you for finding me the other hotel. I appreciate it and allowed me to compare.

I arrived at Nottingham station (today) at 10.30 ready for the 11.20 train. Gemma had been out the night before (went home at 9.00am) and arrived with minutes to spare.

She inisited on smoking in the station which she got a telling off for and threatened with a £80 fine.

Upgraded for just £9 on the train which allowed her to sleep - she couldnt string a sentence together.

The hotel is 'okay' They messed up our booking. I requested (3 times) two SINGLE beds, you guessed it, a double bed had been made up.

They promised me someone would come and change it in 10 minutes. Nobody came so I seperated the bed myself. When we returned from wondering around China Town etc someone had gone to the
trouble of putting the beds together again making a double.

I wasn't happy.

She has now gone to bed so I'm pretty, well, very annoyed, sat having a beer on the Strand At the moment, it all seems a waste of time. I should have brought Mum.

Charlie - if you're still in The Strand wander along to Covent Garden, usually a bit of life there this time of the evening. Later on, if you don't make it to the West End, have a walk along the South Bank, should be loads of people out and about.

Here goes...

The evening was good fun.

I woke Gemma up at 7.30ish and we had a bit of bubbly in the room whilst getting ready. We took a stroll to China Town (having been ripped off earlier on in the day by a man on a tricycle. He charged us £5 for a 30 second ride - we were only round the corner!)

The Chinese was nice and reasonably prices. We headed over to Oneils where there was a great Irish band playing.

We then found a few more 'real English pubs' before searching for a club. We couldn't find one...We then stumbled into the 'gay area' which was great fun. Unfortunately, the thai lady boys didn't do it for me. The music in some of the Gay clubs was good with a great atmosphere.

We ended up in GA8 which was rammed. At 12.00ish Gemma got too tired, which was a shame. She went back to the hotel and I decided to stay out. I got really lost and drank a fair bit. I hired a tricycle man and he took me to a pub, corner shop and then a club.

The club he took me too was an old barn. The entrance fee was silly but I had nothing else to do, so buggered it. Low and behold, Kerry Katonna and Peter Andre were in there dancing! Good fun.

I then slowly wondered back to the hotel trying to work out my location on the iPhone.

Stopped off at another club and then hired another tricycle to take me back to the hotel.

Woke up in the morning feeling very fresh. :sj: Enjoyed a cooked breakfast before hopping on a London bus. The tour guide was incredibly irritating. Old geeza who had clearly had enough of talking about Big Ben.

Then a river cruise which was also good fun. Hopped back on the bus which took us to Madame Tussauds, which was - brilliant!

Quick bite to eat then hopped on a bus to Camden (Steve's suggestion)

It was very down to earth and you could enjoy a Fosters without having to re mortgage your house. ;)

Tube straight to Kings Cross and then back home!

All in all, a good trip. I wish she hadn't got so drunk the night before. The evening was spoilt and she was very tired on the Monday. It's all a learning curve I guess.

The two days was very expensive but it's great for a weekend away if your prepared to pay.

Claire Powell is Peter's manager. Peter was in the club with Kerry on Sunday evening/Monday morning. Peter tweeted Shaun's comment Sunday morning (am). Peter is back at work next week (now). Peter went out sunday night. When I saw Peter and Kerry I posted it straight on Facebook -

01.25 (Monday morning) - Yes, I exaggerated that I was dancing with him as he was on a balcony. It looked like a barn but was more of an old building/mill turned into a bar down a side street. The guy on the tricycle said it was a 'famous hot spot' - it cost a fortune to walk through the door, but I had no where to go...so buggered it.

Another thing, if I was going to lie about being in a 'amazing club with celebs' - I'd have picked some 'A lister's' - A chap who is 'dad of the year' and a woman who sold her drug story to The Sun aren't celebs - it was just odd being in the same building with them, out of all the places in London.
