How to do SEO?

Just I few questions, I think I've found a website designer, however it only comes with basic SEO. I was wondering what do I need to do to make sure my website is on the first or second page of google and bing. I only know one thing which is back linking but I am really not sure what else I need to do for example how do you choose keywords

SEO is complicated IMO. I wouldn't know where to start. Pay a professional web designer to do the whole sherbang. You won't look back buddy.

Matthew, distance is no object. If I were going to pay for a professionally designed site, I'd be looking to the IOW, Southampton, or Bonny Scotland. There are many well respected website desgners on here. ( Apologies if I've left anyone off )

Personally speaking, I'd prefer to hire a designer to make a professional looking website with my content, and then hire an SEO expect, rather than expect someone to be a jack of all trades.

yes they do onsite SEO but if you want offsite SEO you need to pay £100 pounds a month but I don't get SEO full stop.:o

I agree with Neil on this Matt if your paying £xxx the surely it should cover the cost of what ever you would like etc.

Now this may be a low sweeping statement BUT (here goes) anyone can do a design mate even i can do web designs the main hardwork is the code in the background and getting it to work and do what it should properley.

i have looked at your link and yes they seem to have a few in the portfolio BUT how good are they ranking, how much work/trade/business etc do they get ?

I think to be fair its all about asking the right questions to the designer/coder etc

I don't know, thats why I employed the services of someone that could provide a history of websites that look the part and that rank well on google when using a typical search term for their industry.

I've advised on SEO before, do a search of my posts :)

One of the most important factors is good, unique content. That is normally not the job of the web designer / coder (call them what you like). If I produce a website for somebody they are asked to provide all the content (copy text AND images). I'll point them to good stock photo sites for images if they can't provide any, and I also know a few good professional photographers who I can refer them to, but that's as far as it goes. I also know a few self employed copy writers who I can refer clients to as well if they want. But I don't write the copy myself.

Some web designers will (I think Martin provides this service) but to be honest it's rare - good copy writing is expensive, prohibitively so in most cases, which is why most people write their own copy.

There's only so much a web designer can do for SEO - page titles, h1 tags, technical stuff (e.g. SEO friendly URLs on CMS systems) etc. and they shouldn't really be charging extra for that, it's taken as standard practice.

If you've been quoted a monthly fee that's most likely to be for an Adwords campaign. Maybe not - but if it's for on-site SEO I'd expect a lot for it. The problem with paying monthly for on-site SEO is that it can sometimes take a few weeks / months for any changes to take effect so half the time you're paying for nothing :eek:

I would imagine once you have this content, any web designer will check out the other 'factors' when designing your site. I have also found google love it if you regularly update your site, so ensure you have this facility or your designer is prepared to regularly update your site.

Not a professional opinion by any stretch of the imagination, but works for me.
