Proud to be British??

I have a Rumanian couple living in my house at the moment.

I went for a couple with the chap tonight and we started to discuss languages and heritage etcetera....

He pointed out that English was the Language for The States,Canada,Australia South Africa..to name but a few....all huge continents.We should be so proud that from a tiny country we have had so much influence on the World.Maybe that was down to the Sea-Faring days of the past??

Even now I would think most of the music anyone hears in the World is either American or British and definately in the English language.

A lot of people are prepared to run the country down...do we really understand the importance of our standing!!

Keeping this on topic for a DJ forum there is a massive arabic and asian music chart and it
never even touches our charts because it is so different from the "European" way.

I suppose not as much is spoken in the same language which is what your on about?

Do not forget that most of Spanish/Latin american music has a massive arabic influence and Spanish is the second most spoken language as they desecrated most the worlds (musical) cultural divergence at the same time as us and the French :sofa: Proud? Not really.

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world.

Modern English consists of Latin, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Ancient Greek, Scandinavia etc. It isn't a pure language at all, but is derived from many sources.

Old English is unintelligible to a modern English Speaker.

We take foriegn students for 6 weeks during the summer mainly spanish, italian or german. Some speak very good english others struggle a bit. The last 2 we had went back today and the one guy (well they were 15) was always asking what is the correct word or verd etc, while the other one was using it as a holiday !

I'm also doing 9 gigs for another english school and basically if i stuck danza Kurodo and on The Floor on repeat my night would be a doddle ! But they also ask for YMCA !? :shrug:

I love our language,it has so much history.French words,Viking Norse words(days of the Week)even Gailc and celtic.We have been invaded soi many times in the past that our language is so unique with the mix.

What is it to be British? Is that the question here?

I'm not sure that there is much of a 'British identity' anymore. There are various cultures throughout the UK which are preserved, but to be British can mean anything.

The British Empire is more or less reduced to the UK now, with America taking it's place as the single biggest influence on the world. I think that balance is shifting to the far east - it would be interesting to take a peak into the 22nd century.

I did say he was forgetting asia and the middle east and russia for that matter which span a huge geographical area and have a completely different form of music which we never hear about.
