View Full Version : Disappointing 13th Birthday

Had a very disappointing gig last night.

It's been a while since i've done a kids disco so maybe i'm out of touch. Having liaised with the client at the booking stage I was simply told "just play modern charty stuff" for the music selection (no specific songs requested) and that they wouldn't want games as they're 'too old'.

First issue was with the setup - I request an hour prior to the start of the event to allow for a proper setup and ensure everything is as it should be. The party started at 7pm yet they wouldn't open the venue until 6:30pm - As suspected it was pushing it and I got things underway at 7:05pm.

After introductions and chart music while all the guests arrived frequent call-outs on the mic for requests drew a blank response. The kids clearly weren't there to dance and while the girls sat on one side of the room, the boys found entertainment by kicking inflatable beach balls in the faces of their friends....

Sensing they were getting restless I proposed doing the buffet early to keep them occupied while I tried to fathom ways to get these kids on the dancefloor.

Being told that games weren't required I hadn't done any preparation or research on what games to play - it must be a good 5+ years since I've done a kids disco and I couldnt for the life of me think of what to do.

There was an inflatable limbo set in the room, so made good of what was available and started a limbo trying to spur the kids on with a bit of boys v girls rivalry. By the end most of the kids had disappeared outside (probably to have a tab i'd guess!) so to lure them all back in I did a boys v girls limbo competition to see who could get the longest line, telling them to collect their friends from outside. With a full dancefloor I hit the cheese which worked for all of 10 minutes before they all got bored and sat down again.

Out of ideas I reverted back to the chart stuff and continued asking for requests. A trickle came in until one girl asked for "Shakira - Waka Waka" - It turned out to be some unheard of holy grail of dancefloor fillers with all of the kids storming onto the dancefloor doing a choreographed african dance.

In complete shock (and with an hour yet to fill) I carried on with the requests, yet the dancefloor gradually emptied and lost them all by 9:30pm (I was literally in a room of parents and no kids as they'd all disappeared outside)

Ended just before 10pm and I was en-route home by 10:30pm

Anyone else had troublesome young-teen gigs lately? Or do I just put it down as 'one of those gigs'?

I had one last month, did it as a favor for a friend, as i don't normally do kids parties, exactly as your night went. didn't enjoy it at all.

Well first off, a 13th isn't a kids disco!

Secondly "Waka Waka" is one of the most requested tunes for this age group in my experience.

It is hard to keep the lads attention as they still want to run around after each other sliding while the girls generally want to dance and have a good time. That said
once they get over the shyness and start requesting songs its usually the boys that are coming over every 5 seconds! :D I reckon once I've had the first request in I would
maybe play 5 of my own choices, the rest requests!

Had an 11th Birthday and was roughly the same. Kids in and out of the hall. There were around 20 or so tracks that were massive hits with everyone dancing and we made a really big thing out of it, hands in the air etc, lets hear you scream ...

Some tracks completely dived, but the main thing was that generally they would get bored after about 2 minutes of each song. Started cutting up the tracks a bit to get over this and seemed to work.

We generally dont do kids games as we're not kids entertainers! In my view we are djs and we play music to keep people entertained, not play games.

It's a specialist area i think, i couldn't do it

I've not listened to the charts since the end of the 90's so i wouldn't have a clue what kids wanted or were listening to

Well first off, a 13th isn't a kids disco!

That's the exact feeling I had when I went to setup - as the night went on It became more apparent that perhaps they aren't as 'grown up' as some perceive to be and in fact, what they needed is daft games, etc (as you would with a 'kids disco')

I'll be the first to admit i'm not very au fait with 'kids' parties not having done one in a while. I think i'll stick to 18ths and 21sts in the future (Y)

 I find that a bit 'wrong' to be fair - It's not too much to ask to have up to date music if your promoting yourself as a professional DJ/Disco!

t's not too much to ask to have up to date music if your promoting yourself as a professional DJ/Disco!

Having said that, I played Cher Lloyd - Swagger Jagger after a young lassy requested it...and she was the only one dancing to it. Similarly with the new JLS song and Glad you came by the wanted - all massive tunes on the radio/MTV...but hardly got a response from the crowd.

I do agree though - the charts don't change that much from week-to-week so it's not hard to keep up to date.

You're wasting your time Pridders - it's been discussed before on here.

I'd hope not, as it's not the sort of thing we encourage on this site.

Indeed, why would you even mention such a method Paulie?

Well i did a 14th Birthday last night for a friend of mine and it was a very successful night :)

I broke the night up into stages with the first part playing pop/dance and r'n'b songs from the charts etc

Then the second part i introduced them all to a game of Rock and Roll Bingo :) which was pre-arranged and well received by all, including the adults (amazing how many of the youngsters know the older songs).

Then the last part was based largely on all the requests i had come in and the current teenage floor fillers :)

I'll try and extract the playlist from last nights party from VDJ-7

Thank you

Glenn

I see what you mean, but i don't take on every job, i tend to do 30ths and above and weddings

I also always ask the customer what kind of music they're looking for, if they say something which i don't feel comfortable playing, then i make my excuses and say i'm booked out

It's ok with the odd couple of songs out of my comfort zone, but if someone asked for a general genre of music all night, and i knew nothing about the music they asked for, i'd decline the booking

I don't class myself in the same field as you guys, i like playing music that people around my own age will like, i don't want to play to 5 years olds just for the money, if you see my point?

One day I'm going to do a step by step guide on how I do kids parties. Yes, they are too 'cool' to play games but if you pitch it right and sell it to them properly, (without being patronising) they work a treat. I honestly don't understand what's so difficult about them. You don't have to be a children's entertainer!

I had all the lads coming up and asking for all the cheese stuff like Macarena, Cha Cha Slide, Saturday Night etc and when i dropped these tracks they all stampeded onto the dance floor and had soooo much fun :)

Track listings and requests are key IMO for any event I am not sure about.

Especially kids disco's. School ones are funny as they request some strange stuff that turns out to be a school play track or something that they all know and makes the night.

Neither is the JLS song ;-)

They aren't called DJ only CD's for nothing! (Granted it's a download lol)
