Understand MIDI?

I have little to no knowledge of MIDI but have a file that I have sucessfully played through Adobe Audition.The quality of the individual instruments is pretty bad and I was just wondering if there are better plugins I could get for this?
Or should I use another programme entirely?
I only need the midi for this one file not as a long term project but want to make it sound as good as possible.

My girlfriend writes music and the sound from the laptop was awful. Most instruments were OK but drums were basically just a click.

For her birthday I bought her a Yamaha keyboard with Midi in/out and a USB-Midi interface (£3 from eBay!). the difference is amazing, she now writes music by playing it on the piano keyboard instead of using mouse/keyboard combination and the playback is superb.

If you want to email me the midi file I could try and play it through the keyboard and record as MP3 for you.

Have you checked the settings in Adobe Audition? I haven't used it for a while (it used to be called 'Cool Edit Pro' many moons ago) but I know you have to sort the Midi settings properly and also make sure the sample rate is 44100 or something like that.

I use Synapse Audio's 'Orion' to record my own music and I also use a Midi keyboard (M-Audio) and I have no issues whatsoever. I plug straight into the laptop, enable midi, click the keyboard to match it up and that's it.

I presume what you are trying to do is assign virtual instruments to individual midi tracks and you only have the general midi sounds in audition at your disposal?

So the pianos & drums & basses etc. sound pretty cheap and nasty?
