Yeah if in doubt send a playlist request form out..... or just phone/email them ask if there are any special songs or types of music they want to hear on the night... You then find the'll probably list a few or just say something along the lines of no not really just the usual disco / 70's 80's 90's stuff :)

The recomended music would be mowtown rock and roll plenty of beatles and that type of thing , jive bunny mixes are quite good as well for this age group.
I find that avoiding 80's onwards will help avoid them being diapointed (in miost cases at least) tom jones may help as well.

It's not a 50th Birthday party, Pete.... it's a 50th anniversary, which means that the celebrants are likely to be in their 70's.

Have you checked on what sort of crowd will be there? (eg will they all be older, or is there a mixture?) Your starting point for ANY gig is to find out as much as possible about the event, and the likes and dislikes of the people who are celebrating.

How did you end up with this one, Callum? Even if you get pointers from here, do you think your music collection and / or musical knowledge will be up to it? It's one thing to stretch yourself, but you don't want to get too far out of your depth that you can't do a good job..... I'm not saying you can't do a good job, just asking.

Well the first question is--what is the gig?

50th Anniversary means 50 years married to me :teeth:

Soundtracker thinks 50th Birthday?

Which is it?

Hell of a difference in the music :teeth:

If its REALLY 50 years married start on Glen Miller, Swing and all that jazz.

Better get that playlist fast!

I'm doing my parents 50th wedding anniversary gig next month.

The stuff I will be playing is Glenn Miller, Jim Reeves, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra and the like. I will also sling in some Robbie Williams (Swing when your singing album)

I'm also gonna play the hits from the years their 3 kids were born. That could be interesting!!

Some line dance will also feature as my parents both line dance. Some party dances for the kids too.

That's my opinion on my parents do anyway!!

Good luck though!!

Right it is a 50th wedding anniversary. the reason i got it is that I'm the only person in the eyemouth area that would do it on such short notice!!!

base it around 50's 60's and 70's music you wont go wrong plus the usual party tunes

You might find that this could be very similar to a wedding if it is family orientated. You'll probably have grandchildren who will probably be in there 20s and 30s and then next generation in their 40s and 50s, so be prepared to play everything.

If they have a fair few friends there, then keep it rather gentle with lots of well known tunes and standards, and make sure there are lots of sessions of either slowies or strict tempo.

Having said all that, my parents have nearly been married that long and I don't think they'd be up for strict tempo and Glen Miller. They would like rock n roll, 60s, 70s, some 80s, with a smattering of up to date stuff like Kylie and Robbie etc.

Did one last week, yes it was very similar to a wedding but played a bit more music so couples could dance together, which went down very well. Not too loud with a little bit of cheese, you should be ok.

As said previous this is an anniversary not a birthday so at 50th anni expect people to be in their 60's - 80's age group. If it was a fiftieth i would have gone more 70's 80's.

I have just arranged a party for an 80 year old who wants a Barn Dance plus OTHER music which includes Glen Miller and heres another good one--
Trini Lopez Party music--if I had a hammer etc.

I go with most of what everyone says--lot of older people who DONT want blinding lights and deafening music!

Moon flower pointing at a 9.99 mirror ball from maplin works pretty well actually. Tried it once for 'come dancing' type venue I played a few years ago. Looked pretty good but the bulb went twice in one evening (running continuess for 6 hours does that lol)

dont forget, not everyone will be in their 80,s. i did one on saturday, combined 70th birthday, and 50th anniversary. They only wanted a couple of slowies, and most of the requests text to me were for music dating back over the last 20 years, and towards the end of the night , much more recent stuff. The floor was packed.

Hi may i suggest that you have the anniversary waltz to hand for slow dance.
we also use alot of sing a long track such as :- My old mans a dustman, roll out the barrel, any old iron, old bull and bush and so on.
Max bygraves. des o'conner. foxtrots, quickstep. ect for the old age perishers.

Yeah as others have said there are bound to be all sorts of ages there i would have thought as anniversaries (especially the big ones) tend to big big family events - where all the family members get together.

Admittedly some of the younger generation will have been dragged there kicking and screaming or with the promice they will only have to stay an hour - but i think you'll find quite a mix of ages.

one thing to keep in mind 20 years ago these people would just be sat around waiting to pass on - today many of the older people are fitter and do more than the younger generation - so dont be surprised if ya get to play some modern stuff....

did a party month ago and soem younger ones wanted firestarter - i wasnt gonna play it as i didnt think it suitable for the many older people there - funnily enough 80% of the 40 plus group were on the floor for it :):):)

i say if nowt else be a bit riskay in ya choice every no and then and sometimes it hits the spot.

oh if you play who the :Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored: is alice by smokie and suzie quatro - see if theres an alice in the crowd and dedicate it to em - gets em up all the time and they really enjoy it .....

that's as bad as overdosing on Jive Bunny.

Five or ten minutes of "Stars on 45" is one thing, but when people ask for 50s & 60s music they want ORIGINAL tracks by the ORIGINAL artists, not some dodgy dance remake with snippets of the tracks segued together over a 4/4
