Bahahah passed by Friday... You will take the test when your instructor thinks your ready. That's could be a few months or a few years!

Didn't they change it so you had to have x amount of hours completed before you were able to take your test?

... and beware the Instructor who holds you back to make more money!

(Most of my pupils pass their test after 30 - 35 hours with private practice between lessons) ;)

Good Luck!

Well my one and a half hour lesson lasted 10 minutes today. We had to stop (she quoted) 'for the interest of public safety' :(

This was my first test in 12 days so I'd forgotten pretty much everything. She decided it would be best for me to start on a hill....I lifted my foot of the clutch too quickly and we literally did a wheel spin and sped off...there was a bus in front so she slammed on the brakes. I did a nervous laugh and felt really stupid.

She then tried 'junction crossing' I had to turn right. It was really busy with 4 cars cueing behind me. I panicked and drove out onto the next road and very nearly knocked over a cyclist. I was getting frustrated and annoyed so she took me home....well, to the pub.

I'll read the paper and chill out here for a bit. Horrible day at work, everyone has gone to the festivals and I'm just fed up.

If you had forgotten everything and your just starting to learn then why on earth would you start on a hill? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Exactly what I said but she was adamant I'd be fine.

Obviously not, Dave. I'm assuming he meant "lesson".

Surely you could have worked that out.

Something seems fishy with regards to this instructor charlie...only 16 days after your first lesson...and 12 days after your last lesson...so im guessing youve had one...maybe 2 lessons all told and shes got you doing hill stars at the beginning of the lesson....erm nope.

Kick her into touch and go with someone who knows what they are doing...and thats coming from me wo has a background in Road Safety and worked very closely with most of the ADIs in Cumbria and the DSA!

It does seem a bit strange to me. I remember my first driving lesson, it was in a Vauxhall HC Viva. I never got out of 1st gear, it was all about clutch control and familiarising yourself with the controls.

The second lesson was getting used to learning to change gear. The first two or three lessons were in parts of town with little or no traffic, eg, on the industrial estate in the evening. The idea being to get the basic skills of operating the vehicle so that it came semi-naturally by the time you had to start worrying about the traffic and other hazards.

Putting someone with very little experience into what sounds like pretty heavy traffic seems stupid to me and can only promote anger against learners from other drivers. I appreciate that everyone needs to be able to drive in heavy traffic but you have to work up to it.

You wouldnt expect someone who had never DJ'ed to be comfortable being sent onto a stage full of equipment they had never used before and for them to give a good performance to 2000 people would you!

I actually cancelled my driving lessons after the first 5 because my employer at the time, Post Office Telecommunications (pre BT) taught us to drive. We were taught in pairs, two apprentices and a driving instructor in a car for a whole week so we each got 20 hours driving practice. What was especially good was that we were able to travel far and wide rather than doing the same small area week in, week out as tends to happen within the restriction of a 1 hour driving lesson.

After that we then put L plates on the vans of person we were apprentices with and chauferred them round for about 6 weeks before being put in for our tests. We probably got the equivalent of around 150 lessons in that time so the test was a walkover :)

Change instructor, move your lessons to weekly, clear your head before doing anything and if you are really unsure how to do something say to them. You are paying them if yOu need something explained more say so. Don't letthem bully you into doing something you can't do. Say with the independent instructors. The big national companies just push people through a fast as they can!

The big national companies alos have a habit of employing Newly Qualified ADIs as well because they can get them cheaper due to lack of experience....good for them...not good for the learner... ;)

Brush it off and try not to let it knock your confidence Charlie. It'll get easier every time. I agree with the earlier advice about weekly lessons, in fact as many as you can afford and can fit in.

Best of luck with the lessons.
