I think Darren means email not the forum?

I did consider this but I'm sure plenty of people strongly suggested otherwise and most people have them turned off?

Its the default setting in Outlook.

Another problem with pictures in emails is that there are so many ways that people access email. Dedicated client like Outlook, Webmail, PC's, smart Phone, Tablets. they display differently in all of them.

I have just been looking at marketing email for my boss to send out and discovered that its a real minefield. Services like Yahoo and Gmail will strip out any stylesheets used to create an email meaning that it just looks pants.

Personally I prefer email as plain text. It just works !!!!

You honestly thought that I wouldn't know how to do that on my own forum? :D

There is a forum that I have been tech admin on for the last 4 years and have made all sorts of custom mods to the forum software code, but only a few weeks ago discovered something I didnt know I could do...... then again, I never did read the manual :D

To be truthful images in email sigs just get lost. I know I have to tell my mail client to view them. A simple nice formatted text footer looks far nicer.

Well....... :)

In answer to your original question......

Outlook -> Tools -> Options -> Mail Format -> Signatures -> New -> Add text & Picture -> Save

On the right pick your email account and what signature you want.

Most methods for adding images to email will attach it, or link to a hosted image. The problem with both of these is that that with most email clients images won't show without a warning which must be clicked before the image is shown (with default settings, anyway).

To get around this you can embed your image as part of a multipart message (see http://www.campaignmonitor.com/blog/post/1759/embedding-images-revisited/) or if the image is simple (like a small logo for example) I came accross this CSS method which is pretty cool and claims to work in most email clients: http://www.imgtocss.com/

Interesting, I looked at the imgtocss website and tested their example.

The firefox icon they use as an example is 64 x 64 pixes and a tad under 9K in size. The resultant HTML to replicate that image is a whopping 113k !!!

It's always going to be bigger...have you ever heard of a workaround that isn't? Of course not....otherwise it would be called a shortcut :D

Daz,

If you use live mail the clip below should be handy for you. I tried it out and it works perfect.

Numpty! :p

I know how to do it in Outlook 2003 (and I believe it's the same in 2007), but having checked the T'interweb, apparently Microsoft changed/removed the ability to add an HTML signature in Outlook 2010 onwards.

If you still need to know Darren - I've literally just inserted my logo into my signature today

Follow these steps, assuming you already have a signature stored within outlook.

Tools - Options - Mail Format - Signatures - Edit - Right Click within your existing signature - Insert Image.

You can also add a hyperlink to the image or "alternative text"

Hope that helps :)

As per our telephone conversation:

Demo: Create and use an e-mail signature [Outlook 2007] (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/demo-create-and-use-an-e-mail-signature-HA010210657.aspx)

But as I said on the phone, you have no control over how it actually looks in other people's email programmes which is why many companies just use text.

:)

The video I posted works in Outlook as well.

Tell you what, send me an email and tell me exactly what you want in your sig, and include the image you want added. I'll knock it together for you and talk you through adding it.

This has probably been mentioned but I would not add a picture to a signature due to attachment issues. I have removed all images from my emails now.

Just copy and paste into the signature box in tools anyway.

This has probably been mentioned...

Don't you think that it's really about time that you start reading threads before you try and comment on them, Toby?

This happens over and over with you and, quite frankly, I think it's rather insulting to your fellow members that you can't be bothered to read what people have posted, but still decide to comment. The response from you is usually that you were in a rush and didn't have time.

If you had bothered to read the thread, you would have seen that people had made comments / offered opinions about adding images, and that Darren has replied...
I wasn't asking for opinions on what they look like, thanks anyway.

Come on, Toby! Show the rest of us on here a little bit of respect by reading our posts before commenting! :daft:

I have used BTinternet for ages and suddenly realised the other week that I have Outlook on my system and I wasn't using it so seeing this thread prompted me to start using it to it's potential. I did a free Microsoft Outlook course when I worked for a company years ago so I know my way round it easily and it's a lot better.

I now have a very nice signature with a couple of photos and I think it looks much more professional. I'm sure you have sorted it out by now Darren but if you haven't and you need advice, just shout me but saying that, Mike's advice is spot on.

Now try sending a test email to some friends who have Hotmail, Gmail accounts etc. so you can see what it looks like when they receive it.

Many of the web based email programmes will block the pictures for a start!

Unfortunately, because you have no control over how different email clients render the signature what looks great on your machine could look rubbish on others.

One of the first things I did was send it to my own hotmail account and I had no problems whatsoever. I also sent it to my wife's BTinternet account and she had no problems either.

Of course it did, I should have known it is only me that experiences these sorts of technical problems...

Mine also shows in web based email accounts???

I did managed to insert the image a different way once and it NEVER worked.

When I followed the instructions in my previous post, I had no problems.

Fair enough but that's what I did.

I used to send email marketing campaigns (not SPAM before anyone says anything!!) and used to setup the outgoing email document with graphics embedded in to the physical email itself (as opposed to sending them as attachments). We did testing on several email systems and never encountered any real problems. I think most normally don't display the pics as standard as it saves on bandwith but there's always the option to turn on pictures, show pictures, etc.

So, all in all, you shouldn't really have trouble with pics in emails. It's just how you set up the initial email that counts. From memory, it's been a while!, I think it might have something to do with creating emails in HTML format but I could be way off the mark here.

Fair enough but that's what I did.

I tried it with my logo in the signature and tested it on Hotmail, GMX, Gmail and my old office Outlook based account and it didn't show in any of them.

If I remember correctly I eventually got it to show in some of them but the formatting was all out and it didn't look as good as it did on my computer so I gave up!

If anyone wants to send theirs to my Hotmail account just send me a PM and I'll give you the address, I'm interested to see what they look like. :)

I'm pretty sure the method I linked to above results in an HTML based signature. You design it in Word but can also use Frontpage or similar programmes.

Apologies - just re-read the thread.

When I did the email campaigns I didn't create an email signature. It was a case of creating an email template to be used with e-mailmerge and all the graphics were embedded directly in to the template document.

I use Outlook 2003 for my day job and with it being local government we have to have an email signature which contains a graphic (the council's logo) and that seems to work well enough. I've only got MS Office Starter 2010 so don't have Outlook on it so can't comment on the new version.

Just done a quick test with someone who has sent me an email and the signature pic is hidden by default.

I can only see it once I have added them to my "Safe Contacts List", which is my point really, we don't know what security settings people have.

Still, I like having a logo in the signature so I think I will try again. Anyone know how to add one in Thunderbird? :)

Anyone know how to add one in Thunderbird? :)Yes. There are several ways, but the easiest way that I found is:-

Write -> create your signature -> File -> Save As -> File (Make sure file type is HTML and remember where you've saved it and the file name)....

Then to associate with the email: Account settings -> Tick 'Attach the signature from a file' and insert file name.

Steve the DJ

Yes: Write ->create your signature -> File -> Save As -> File (Make sure file type is HTML)....

Now, I can't remember off the top of my head how you associate the file as your signature.... give me a moment. :D

Thanks Angela! :)

I have now found a box to add an HTML file, sorted.
