After some advice from the "Golfers" we have on here. I know Neil (Deckstar) plays.

Reason I'm asking is that I'm looking for something to get me out of the office and have a bit of me time.

I have played before for a while in the early 90's but was never a club member as I played in N Ireland. I have no kit etc so looking for some advice on what to look for at a golf club, roughly what people are paying for memberships and green fees etc etc.

I have 2 clubs local to me ie: within 5 miles or plenty of others in the surrounding areas.

There are a lot of clubs struggling for members at present so try and avoid paying the signing on fee, which is what puts a lot of people off.

You may need to have a handicap to join certain clubs and also a proposer and seconder who are members of the club, so I would check the entry criteria too.

Fees tend to be about £800 to £900 a year for a decent club, but its been a while since I played. Saying that I have a golf day in September so had better get down the range.

Clubs - get measured at American golf or similar and get a set that are the right length for you or you will never make progress.

I can recommend american golf,they are very good,with a good second hand club selection.If you want decent clubs\ex demo ect.You will get very good clubs at a fraction of the new cost.

I was in the shop the other day and got an ex demo king cobra driver in the sale for £50.

I also returned to playing golf this year after 6 years.What i did was join a club where my membership was non inclusive.this means i am a member can play 7 days a week but i have to pay £3 for every game.It was not much for the membership so if i dont play to much golf it doesnt cost me lots like a full membership would.

As you mentioned Paul I play purely to get me out into the sun during the summer.

I currently use pay as you play courses and normally use the nine hole local to me for £8 a round. I have played at another course which is £20 for 18 holes and the standard and condition of the course is much better.

I'm still using clubs and a bag I got from the local rag for £40. There is a driving range nearby which for a fiver you get 100 balls which ain't bad.

I don't play enough or to a high enough standard to warrant joining a proper golf club.

No help to you Paul, but there is a Pay and Play near me, attached to the full Golf Club. Sounds a very similar arangement to the one Neil speaks of.

Personally, I view the game as does Mark Twain:
" Golf is a good walk spoiled".

For myself, Samuel Johnson describes one of my pastimes thus:

" Coarse Fishing. A fool at one end, and a worm at the other".

Paul I got my full set of clubs from Sports Direct, £100 all in = bargain.

As with Neil, I play on the pay and play courses, there are 2 near me, dirt cheap and great for me and my mates as we are pants.

Its great exercise also, I walk miles zig zagging my way round the course :)

If / when it quietens down come down one day and we can go for 9 holes, we can normally get round in a couple of hours.

A proper club would be good, if I had the time I think that I would get involved with one.

Golf clubs are like DJ's - you get what you pay for.

Get measured or spend years of frustration. I haven't hit a ball for a good while, but used to play off 16, which is decidedly average. However, I have played on and off since I was 15 and the right length clubs, with the correct weight distribution on the head is a definite requirement.

American golf can assist and will even measure you up for second hand clubs and can change shafts etc. Don't just buy something off the shelf if you want to give yourself half a chance of improving. Also don't think graphite shafts are immediatley the the best option. I still use steel shafts as my swing speed causes me issues with graphite shafts.

Actually Dave as part of the "Networking" we do have an afternoon on the golf Course........Crazy Golf that is :D

I think Ben is the reigning champion.

The Windmill hole is still my nemesis :D :D

Was actually thinking of crazy golf and can just see you all there with a network "drink" going round the courses lol
