Themed event ideas - 'Gypsy Wedding'

The General Manager at a nice hotel we work at on a regular basis is leaving, and they're having a leaving do for him next Sunday (28th August) and we're providing a few bits and bobs - including the disco.

Due to a previous 'incident' or two, they're taking the mickey a bit out of the departing General Manager, and the event has a theme of 'Gypsy Wedding' :daft:

Several staff members are doing 'turns' during the evening. Not entirely sure what this will entail yet, although we do know that the Events Manager is getting dressed up in a big dress and doing a dance to Zorba the Greek (:confused: ) and there's something about the Restaurant Manager in a pink tu-tu (:confused: :confused: :eek: )

Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to ask for members help and ideas for anything that we can incorporate to enhance the 'gypsy wedding' theme.

As well as the old GM leaving, the in-coming GM will be in attendance and obviously we and the venue staff want to also use it as a 'showcase', so we really want to get this one right!

Have you ever seen the TV Programme "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding"? I'm sure you could get lots of ideas from there :)

Look chaps, this is a serious thread and I am looking for members help and suggestions here.

If you've got nothing other than stupid jokes to post, then please don't bother posting at all.

I wouldn't mind if the thread had run for 2 or 3 pages of helpful suggestions and then went off on a tangent, but, come on.... how would you feel if you were asking for help and all that was forthcoming was stupid comments from the off? You wouldn't be too impressed, I bet, and this forum would become about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Thanks Matt - but no, I haven't seen it (doesn't appeal).

Maybe someone who does watch it could come up with a few ideas? - although obviously we're not trying to recreate a gypsy wedding here, just include some thing(s) that suggest it.

This one's got us really stumped, TBH, because I'm not sure it's different enough to a normal wedding to really allow us to do anything (at least from our end of things).

I was going to comment Angela that Matty's suggestion might be worth looking into. The show doesn't interest me in the slightest but it was very popular, including most of the other Wedding suppliers I know on twitter.

In the programme, some will wear ripped up jeans and scraggy t-shirts, the bride wears a dress that will weigh in excess of 2 x her body weight (at least). Ma & Pa will wear nice clothing.

The boys chase the girls who wear next to nothing and they drink, get drunk, then go home (that's if they have actually found a venue that will let them in of course).

The wedding on MBFGW are exactly the same as a wedding that we all do most weekends. Nothing else happens unless they are a rowdy lot, but even then it happens at other weddings as well.

The dress part has already been covered but a lot of the weddings featured in the programme had a lot of 'glitz' and a lot of 'pink' so I would suggest using the starcloth and see if you can find some extra 'glitz' to add onto it.

I also recall that they always seemed to have huge wedding cakes in the shape of a castle, but I think that might be beyond the realms of the disco side.

The only thing I remember from the programme Angela, is that one of the brides wore a White dress with led lights sewn or attached in it! It looked really cool at night when the the room lights were switched off!

What you need to watch is, if you are tarting the disco up to look mbfgw style, make sure the new management don't think you always present it like that!!!

Which is why we've really got to 'hint' at it, rather than go nuts.

In all honesty, there's not really much we can do other than star cloths and pink lighting...

...unless anyone else can come up with something.

Certainly, musically, there's not really much (although Cher might get a play during the night :whistles:)... but any suggestions in that direction too are gratefully received. :thumbsup:

Get Steve to prit stick you to your computer chair for a whole 49 minutes! Arm your self with a cup of tea and your favorite Pogen Original Krisprolls and watch one episode. I enjoyed them all and found it fascinating. I know this isn't great advice but you really need to see it to believe it. You will pick up on a few tips and tricks that I've/and the rest of us, have probably forgotten?

it looks like they are having this Gypsy Wedding evening for that reason, to take the mick out of the stereotypical Gypsy.

Music wise, a lot of R'n'b, dance, trance, pop bump and grind!
Think bling! i think if you went on youtube and search big fat gypsy wedding you might get some ideas from there like the others have said.
