Well after a lot of Umming and Arring I'm selling up :)

I've got 4 discos booked in this year, and one next which will be covered by the DJ I went out with last week.

Reasons: Getting a lot of interviews for full times jobs, not getting a lot of disco work and want to have this off my shoulders.

I hope to start up again in the distant future, and do things very differently putting everything I learnt here into practice, thanks to everyone who's helped me.

However: I enjoy reading and participating on this forum, and wonder. What is the situation for people coming/posting on here who no longer DJ? Is that frowned upon? ;)

Thanks again to everyone who's helped me over the last 2 years.

Oh and keep an eye on the For Sale section ;)

Ta-Ta for now.

Ahhh buddy!

I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully you're making the right decession but I wouldn't be surprised if the DJ bug bites back at a later date.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do and please keep us posted!

Why cant you dj part-time along with a full-time job? A lot of us do so.

:agree:

Isn't it worth looking into? Why not keep your gear incase you decide to go back?

Because not all people can afford to have £XXX amount of equipment sat around and not use it and yes i know were Matt is coming from as i too am in the same boat so i think the 'For Sale' thread will be busy this next coming 4 weeks lol

Same as whats been said Matt good luck with the near future and hope everything works out well mate :)

Sorry to be harsh Matty but 4 bookings for the rest of the year is hardly a business anyway, so to me it's not really giving up anything!

Charlie Brown

How much will Matt make by selling up?

£500/600?

In the long run, it will be cheaper to keep the gear than sell and re buy.

Depends on what he is selling ie: business name, website, equipment, any furture bookings to be redirected etc etc etc

A business name is worth nothing generally and neither is a business unless it's a registered business with proper accounts.

Buying 'goodwill' in a business is a very dangerous thing to do.

True True :o

Ive based my "Sales" aspect on what i feel i would pay if i was buying it as a whole

Anyway Sorry Matt i wont take this thread off topic more then i have (its about YOU selling up) :o

Sorry to hear that you guys hard with this real down in the DJ market.

I agree it is not easy to hold down a full time job and DJ; even harder if you have partner and children. Both me & Si only DJ part-time as we hold full time jobs and it is quite hard, but we do it to release from pressure of the work week.

I will recommend to you guys that are/considering putting up the for sale signs, is to keep your playout systems as you never know when you might want to come back for one night only slots.

Why are selling up? Do you still enjoy it? Surley people on here could give you advice on how to generate more business?

Cowlinn

Do you still enjoy it?

Not really. :o

Charlie Brown

But if you were getting two weddings every weekend, turning over £700, would you enjoy it? (for example)

Maybe you're bored of not getting enough work? Sounds daft, but you could be fed up because it's not keeping you busy?

That's an excellent reason to give it the heave ho.
All the very best in whatever you turn your hand to in the future buddy.

At least you can turn your hand back to this if you need to.

Charlie my assumption is that I think you maybe missing the bigger picture here

£700 every weekend is good return (£36k Gross Income), if an individual's priorities or commitments change then £700 per weekend may not be worth it.

Cowlinn

Thanks to everyone for their replies etc.

And Charlie no I still wouldn't "Enjoy" it if I were earning £700 a weekend.

If you are not enjoying Djing then sad to say you are making the correct choice.

I agree tho it might be worth keeping your play out as you are likely to make a huge loss on your investment here. then at least if you decide to try again in a few years and you do enjoy it again you can at least do it without spending loads of money just to find out.

As for not coming on here - that would be foolish - after all you have probally made some good friends on this site - and if it was Dj's only were would the new dj's come from !

Sorry to hear you're packing in fella.

I was in the same boat last year, my heart just wasn't in it anymore. I had joined a band so kept my PA, but sold 90% of my lighting rig.

6 months later realised it was a huge mistake and remembered all the good times I'd had while DJing - So started up again this year :D

If selling up is the way you're wanting to go - I'd seriously re-think about keeping your PA/Playout just a little bit longer in case you have a sudden urge to get on the road again.

Oh...and I also work full time, so don't let that put you off, while you're quiet now is a perfect opportunity to re-brand IMO! :D

In the long run, it will be cheaper to keep the gear than sell and re buy.

Wise words from one so young. many many years ago, ( when dinosaurs roamed the earth :D :D ) , I sold up my kit, being in a similar position to Matt. Most of the records went with it, in order that I would not have the means of restarting.

Then I stood in for a mate with his kit, played with these newfangled silver discs, and stood in for him next week. And next week. And then I got a residency for us, and was forced to go on my own again.

The rest as they say is history.

Matt, if you're not enjoying it, then it's time to hang up the headphones. However, when you've only got one booking every blue moon, a lot of the fun goes out of it.

Don't do anything rash, the £500 let's say you get by selling the kit could be recouped by just two discos. All the best mate.

I gave up in 1991 because I wasnt enjoying it but very quickly started to miss it, especially when I went to functions and wasnt impressed by the DJ.

I didnt sell my gear, well not directly, I used most of it to repair other peoples discos so have had to rebuild from scratch. Almost there and cant wait to get out there again :)

You obviously don't enjoy it Matt (you've said so yourself) and to be blunt, I don't think I have ever seen a review from you or noticed you ever say what you have coming up at the weekend etc so it can't be something that you are that interested in either. In other words, you don't seem to be that bothered and I haven't noticed you asking for advice etc on how to improve things either.

Believe it or not, I am not trying to be harsh on purpose, they are just observations I've made. Every time someone says that they are giving up or thinking of giving up, the advice is always (and I've said it loads of times too), to maybe have a break or go part time etc. I think it's plainly obvious that you have made your mind up so if it's really what you want to do then stop. I do think it's a good idea to keep some equipment though just incase you have a change of heart in the future.

You may find that once you have made the decision to stop, things might get a bit easier? There won't be any pressure on you and you can do things as and when you feel like it. I am sure there will be people who know you DJ and it may be that after a while you decide that you want to do something.

A little off topic, but how does that mean you don't enjoy it /are not interested in it?

I rarely (if ever) do either of the above & I can assure you I am still very interested & enjoy my job.

Sorry, I thought it may come across like that. I didn't explain it that well.
What I meant was (and Matt has taken offence to it for some reason in the past which wasn't my intention by the way).... I have seen him post many times on the forum but have never really seen any comments etc on him being busy or having a good or bad night etc (that still sounds bad...arrghh!).

I agree that just because you don't blurt out what you're doing every week doesn't mean that you're not interested but I have thought at times whether Matt actually still DJ'd or was just posting on the forum because he used to.

Up until now, I was always actively DJ'ing while posting on this forum, which is besides the point. :)

Thanks again to everyone who's posted comments, I think I'll be a lurker for a while ;)

Depends how long it will be before he comes back to this game. If he waits 10-15 years then most of the gear will be obselete anyway.

Well done, young 'un. :D Please remember that apparently you don't need to spend loads of money on a microphone nowadays, cos you'll only be using it to announce the buffet. ;) :D :D :D :D

I have a lovely Beyer M300 that sounds superb and I intend to use it for much more than announcing the buffet. I also have a Shure Unisphere B for other people to use :D

It's a big decision. Hope it works out for you.

I've got my last disco next month. I've recently started a new nightclub promo job, currently part time, soon to increase, allowing me to quit my day job also.
