Chaps using DNHD2500 I need some advice.

Looking for a back up option in case the HD2500 lets me down. Yes I have CD players and boxes of CD's. However, 18 months on from getting the Denon lots of stuff is now digital only so I would be able to do a night, but would have mucho gaps.

What do you use and will other media players read the MP3's on my hard drive that has been through the Denon Music Manager?

I had a dnhd2500 and it cut out 3 times in cold weather at gigs!!! not a reliable unit IMO.

I have a samsung nc10 and kam digi mini
Takes up the space of any normal 15 inch laptop. Perfect!
They have both just been sat in a bag and I have only used it once to load the music :eek:

Runs Virtual DJ and Traktor and reads Itunes.
I would sod the Denon music manager and just set up a killer track list on VDJ.

My backup is laptop with virtual dj and powered external hd, DJIO going through the mixer and DJ2Go. That's a cheap backup system and it suits me.

The laptop was a refurbished one with extra memory added and all the rubbish stripped off it for £150.00. DJIO was around £60.00 and the DJ2Go was £49.00.

Exactly the same unit I was going to go for but I ended up going for the Kam for
a bit more as its a bit more contollery and has effects and its own sound card. :)

How are you getting on with the DJ2 go? I had a look at one in a shop but it was all sealed.

I must add that I had a dnhd2500 and it cut out at three gigs at the start, which is most certainly not ideal.
I had the "no hdd" error. It seamed to work on the first two times but I was glad I had my mac on the third!!

I swiftly sold it for the VCI 300 (and macbook) which has been sound as a pound for at least 3 hundreds gigs.

Another option is to buy serato scratch and use it as a controller as I did. Just burn the timecode to an MP3 and bobs your uncle.
Your better off with the HC one and Itch however.

I use a second hd2500 as my back up. Previous to that I had a cortex, but my backup HDD was setup for the cortex, and my main HDD setup for the Denon, so I don't have an answer to whether your HDD would be able to have two separate software databases on it alongside your music. I can't see why it wouldn't work just fine though.

You can do this because a while ago one of my friends bought a Cortex HDC3000 and he was having some problems with it. So i had a look at and fixed it.

I connected my external hardisk thats used on the denon hd2500 created a database using the cortex software and then plugged the drive into the cortex and there was not any problems.

The databases wont collide with each other because they both use different database files (apart from the mp3s) So long as the denon has its own database to read from the hdd and the cortex has its own as well there wont be a problem.

Ive had problems with my hd2500 as well especially when its been cold. I still have the NO HDD CHECK HDD on mine.

Im now running the Denon MC6000 and Virtual DJ 7 as the main playout. I also have my hd2500 in another case with the cd drawers.

There's no problem with multiple databases that I've found, mine work fine with Cortex, Numark, and VDJ on board.

However Neil, I'd recommend having the legendary back up HD available, but not in use. It is rare, but not unknown for HD's to fail, usually due to cable faults caused by harsh treatment, regular connecting and disconnecting.

Consider also, as I know one member has recently done, using a back up player with different media, eg memory cards or USB sticks. It's amazing how many tracks you can get on a 8Gb stick, easily enough to finish a night.

Actually on that note, i used to have a dongle with four sticks - one for each category. Just something about sticks though - they are just too easy to fall out or get broken :(

I carry two of everything except speakers--in my case for playout Cortex HDC1000 and Seagate Hard Drive, if anything goes wrong I have an ipod and Mini Disc for temporary music--the spare Cortex stays in the vehicle.

Why compromise with partial backup--go the whole way.

I appreciate this is not cheap but what price backup.

I know several who do this includiing Corabar Steve who has 2 Denons on his rig.;)

Boxes of CDs--sounds too much like hard work--embrace technology its the only way.

Again here, only thing I don't carry spare of is speakers and I am active so 'hopefully' would only lose 1 at a time. 50% of my gigs are within a few miles and even then it would have to fail mid gig rather than before.

Regarding playout, I have a spare laptop in bag ready to boot and Ipad/memory sticks/CD's/HD2500 for temporary music depending where I am.

You can't be too safe!

I'm a bit of a luddite. I run VDJ via a laptop and control it through my Citronic CDM 10:4 Mk4 mixer. I have just bought a Denon DN4500 mp3/CD player to replace my CD only player.
The idea is to create MP3 cd's of my most used 60s, 70s, 80s etc tracks and use them if the lappy or hd dies a death.
A small cd case with a dozen discs should cover most needs in an emergency.

I have an HD2500 - I like it and want a sufficient back up system. It has never broken down. i want to be able to flight case the unit with the HD2500 for quick swap over in case of failure.

Good man perfect answer. I will add a Cortex to the box as they do a 2u version ideal for backup rather than a second lumbering HD2500.

I have two HDD's both identical, three micro usb's, and three power cables for the Seagates. Both travel in a custom ordered padded flight briefcase in their snug compartments and with their cables. Always thinking.

Thats what I have. Although I have both running at the same time into a 4 channel mixer, and I do often have both in use, mainly for track prep - I dont do 4 deck mixing, I dont have 4 tracks that are dull enough to go together simultaneously :)

Reliabilty wise, you shouldnt have too many worries now. Early issues were resolved with firmware updates and for anyone who's had the "No HDD" issue theres two things that cause that.

1) It can be that the hard drive is on its way out. As DJs we absolutely hammer hard drives - they will fail more quickly for DJs, than any other occupation I know. Think about this...on your computer at home...you click on "Save" or double click on an icon to load, the hard drive activity light flickers away merrily for 5 to 10 seconds, then goes off again until the next load/save. Activity wise Its like a retirement home in bournemouth. When DJing, the activity light is on from the moment you play your warm up/sound test track, to the moment the last track finishes and the caretaker kicks your plugs out of the wall sockets. :eek: Its Air traffic control on a bank holiday, in fog and ice! The only solution to a failing drive is to fit a new drive.

2) The hard drive sled is/has worked loose. Here's my solution. I used to do a lot of discos at a safari park (No...I did'nt play Baltimory 'specially for the lions - there was in a function room). I found that driving over the 6 cattle grids to get into the central "human" part of the park usually brought on the "No HDD" fault with the internal hard drive. This wasnt a problem for me, as I only had the internal hard drive loaded up with my backup of my backups backups backup (so I'd have had to have lost 4 external hard drives across 2 x DN-HD2500's before having to use the internal HDD. But I was keen to find a solution. Here's mine:

* Remove the sled hatch on the left side of the 2500 (two bolts)
* Add a strip of self adhesive velcro (not both hooks and loops, just the fluffy half)...or if you havent got half a velcro around, pop a couple of small self adhesive rubber feet onto the rear of the sled hatch. You're not trying to stick anything to anything - just applying a tiny amount of snug-fitting-ness to the drive sled.
* Re-fit the sled hatch with the two bolts.

You'll only need to do it the once.

I missed this the first time, so I feel I ought to point it out now.

File formats. Denon HD2500 and Cortex 3000 really only work with FAT32.
Cortex 1000, and Numark D2/DDS will run happily with NTFS or FAT32.
Thus while a Denon HD will work fine with a Cortex 1000, if the Cortex drive is NTFS, it will be useless to the Denon.

The pairing of Cortex 1000, and D2 is fine whatever you use.

I have another 2500 as a back up plus twin cd player, american audio sdj1 player, ipod, laptop, memory sticks, extra hard drives. Hopefuuly with that lot I can get out of any problems if they arise.

I also carry back ups of most things in the van as well.
