hard drive

need a bit of help on this one.

When i switch laptop on the hard drive starts whirring then stops and lappy wont boot, its not the hard drive as i have tried several.

Heres what I have tried so far

memory
hard drive
hard drive connectors.

if the chip had gone would the hard drive even try to boot up???

If I leave memory out the hard drive stays running but still dont boot up, As soon as memory goes in the hard drive whirrs then stops

Are you able to swap out the memory for another chip ?

Can you login to the BIOS setup ? if so, have you checked everything in there ? default the settings and check the boot up sequence...

Can you get hold of a Linux CD/DVD and try and run a Linux O/S from the DVD drive...

Is the correct power going into your laptop (has the power AC failed/failing)

Does your laptop have a self-diagnostic tool in the boot up ? if so, give it a run...

What is the make and model no of the laptop ?

How old is it ?

No USB ports are damaged/shorting ?

If BIOS will not load, remove the CMOS battery if you can and reset it, or change the battery, then if the BIOS does not load, you may have a power issue tothe motherboard or the motherboard is damaged !!

It's not a HP / Compaq Presario CQ50 or similar, by any chance?

I've had 2 of those in the last 2 weeks, dead as you describe. Motherboard fried due to fan failure on both.

It could well be the motherboard if it ain't beeping any fault codes.

How old is it ?
Does it run hot at all ?
Maybe the CPU needs re-seating , don't forget new thermal compound.....
