You see a shirt in a shop that costs £97 but you have no money, so you borrow £50 from your mum and £50 from your dad.

Now off you go to buy the shirt and the shop assistant gives you back £3 change.

You give your mum back £1 and your dad back £1 and you keep a £1 for yourself.

Now you owe your Mum and Dad £49 each = £98

Plus the £1 you kept for yourself = £99

Where's the missing £1??? :D

The £1 for yourself shouldn't be added on. You owe your parents a total of £98, subtract the cost of the shirt (£97) leaves £1 - the pound that's in your pocket.

My thoughts exactly :D

Just been disussing the image with the shapes and decided it has to be an optical illusion because if you study it carefully you can see that the diagonal lines dont intersect the grid in exactly the same places.

Given that the area of a right angle triangle is half that of a rectangle with the same length sides you get the following result.

Overall triangle 13 x 5 = 65 / 2 = 32.5 squares.

Red triangle 8 x 3 = 24 / 2 = 12 squares
Teal triangle 5 x 2 = 10 / 2 = 5 squares
Yellow shape = 7 squares
Green shape = 8 squares.

Top image 12 + 5 + 7 + 8 = 32
Bottom image 12 + 5 + 7 + 8 + 1 = 33

Neither of them are the size that the overall image is perceived to be.

In one day (2/3rds of the the orginal time of 1½ days): 1½ chickens lay 1 egg per day.
If 1½ chickens lay 1 egg per day, then 1 chicken would lay 2/3rd of an egg per day.

I think one is the wrong answer, though, and 2/3 is correct.

One can't be correct, as the chickens:eggs ratio is 1:1 in any 36 hour period.

If you multiply either chickens or time then eggs multiplies by the same factor. The only time they are all the same is when they're all at 1½.

So if

1½ chickens lay 1½ eggs in 1½ days

then

120 chickens lay 120 eggs in 1½ days

or

1½ chickens lay 120 eggs in 120 days

but

120 chickens don't lay 120 eggs in 120 days - it's actually 9,600 eggs.

So going the other way, 1 chicken laying 1 egg in 1 day can't be right.

But

1 chicken lays 1 egg in 1½ days.

So the chicken-egg ratio in any 36 hour (1½ day) period is 1:1 - on average a chicken lays an egg every 36 hours.

Working this way also gives the answer of 2/3rds of an egg per chicken per day ;)
